At a vitriol-filled rally in Madison Square Garden in New York, Donald Trump ally and podcaster Tony Hinchcliffe called Puerto Rico an “island of garbage”, among a series of racist remarks about Latinos, migrants and others.

This was not a one-off for the Trump campaign – this US election cycle has been dominated by the Republican presidential candidate stoking fear about immigrants. But Trump’s extreme targeting of immigration doesn’t just stick to rhetoric.

The mass deportation plans envisaged by a potential Trump White House 2.0 dwarf anything previously seen – both in scale and in the intensity of the former president’s determination to ride roughshod over legal guardrails.

These policies raise both ethical and financial concerns. The American Immigration Council says Trump’s mass deportation plans could cost $88bn a year, and would come with a huge human cost, as about 5.1 million children who are US citizens live with an undocumented family member.

While many of Trump’s immigration policies during his presidency were largely stymied in the courts, this time we need to take him at his word, says David Leopold, a former president of the American Immigration Lawyers Association.

Trump’s immigration policies also align with other aspects of his vision for a potential second term in office, which promises to be more ruthless, radical and vengeful than any administration in modern times.

  1. Those plans would immediately be approved by R's majority in Congress..

People will be gone just like their protective legal status.

  2. He did it before – children taken from their parents at the borders – some have never been reunited.
Stop asking if Trump really means what he says?! What do you think?

  3. It's an authoritarian population control policy leveraging bigotry and xenophobia.

    This is fascism. Full stop.

  4. Hahaha you may be a worse journalist than you are an actual person. you're a liar and a thief.

  5. In Uk they do round up of illegal immigrants and deportation on a regular basis and children born of illegal parents are not given citizenship. My sons were born in UK to an Indian father with a spouses visa and EU mother but without Indefinite Leave to Remain and we're not granted British citizenship. At 21 and 23 years old they still are not British.
I agree with the former policy but not the latter.
