This is incredibly simple, but TONS of people get this wrong. Mess this one thing up and your gate brace is almost completely non-functional.

  1. So the brace goes from the bottom of the hinge side to the top of the swing side? I have two gates on a back driveway. We have tension lines on both. The gates aren't technically sagging as much as they've been push out by wind. The gates are five feet each…how should I get it back to center?

  2. Whoever installs (and defends) putting the diagonal from the top hinge to the bottom outside corner seriously needs to take an IQ assessment.

  3. It doesn't matter which way the braces go if you connect them properly. If you don't connect them properly either brace can fail. Running the diagonal up from the lower hinge simplifies the connection for people who don't understand because they can toe-nail the brace to the rail and be ok. If you run the brace the other way and try to toenail it you won't develop much strength and this will eventually loosen. Then there is the matter of the tension connection at the other end of the top rail, this is usually taken care of by a proper gate strap hinge. If you do it with a normal door hinge then you will have a problem with this connection. If you're not a structural engineer you can't begin to dispute any of this, if you are a structural engineer then you will recognize these points.

  5. The diagonal braces are always drawn wrong on every cartoon and video game. It's like some unwritten rule to illustrate them improperly.

  6. Iโ€™ve installed fences for 11 years and have always braced from hinge to latch, hinge low side latch to the high side, and never had a problem

  7. As you can tell in the contractor world, everyone knows better. lol everyone thinks they know better than the next guy. Itโ€™s kinda funny. Most of the time they both have good views if they have experience

  8. I am actually a locally famous ventriloquist and like many here, I sometimes pretend to be a gate expert . However, I agree with everything they said here.

  9. Would it not be better to have the outer angled brace pointing towards the middle too? That vertical has one brace pushing the top one way and the bottom the other. Relying on fixings to hold it in place

  10. Good video. What is the correct way if the 2×4's are in a flat square frame and the balusters in the gate are vertical 2×4's what's the best way to give it support?

  11. Why not attach the brace to the bottom of the vertical (the one that is hinged to swing from the post) and the top horizontal rail, at or near the junction with the second vertical?

  12. The only problem with the cable brace is that, if the gate is heavy enough, it will slowly stretch the cable. Adjusting every few months advised.

  13. The only way to brace a gate is to put the bottom on the hinge side pushing up from the supported side.

  14. Install compression braces which go outbound from bottom rail to top rail and tension links from top to bottom.
