  1. Michelle from More than Famers showed recently on IG that you can put dried beans in a pillow case and beat them on the ground and they will easily separate. I had never seen that before.

  2. Lima beans and Fordhook lima beans were a real treat when I was growing up. When they were geen, we would shell them, simmer them in salted water until tender. Add a generous amount of butter, rich cream and milk or evaporated milk, bring to a gentle simmer, pepper and salt if necessary. Serve over a slice of bread. So good. Did anyone else eat them that way? Generally there would be some that would dry and mother would cook the dry beans. Thanks for your interesting channel. Love your wisdom, smiles and laughs.

  3. I quit harvesting radishes mostly and let th go to seed then I harvest all the seed pods. We eat these fresh and pickle them. Fresh pickle and canned. They are so good and some of our favorite things to eat. And you get 100’s per plant this way.

  4. I still struggle with the change from summer to fall. I am trying a new thing this year, I'm going to treat myself to a pumpkin spice latte (which I rarely get to have) on the day of our first freeze. Hopefully that would put a positive spin on the event.

  5. Everything needs a time to rest and rejuvenate. I love every change of seasons…I do, admittedly, not have much patience while waiting for the changes to actually occur lol

  6. My last harvest of yellow cherokee beans will be today. Hard freeze coming Wedneday nite and temps only in the 50s snd 40s after Thurs. Snow in the mountains coming Thurs and Fri nite here in n. Idaho.

  7. It was a weird growing season. We are 3 weeks late for frost at this point. Had some cool nights but no freeze yet and I am in Eastern Canada. we had a concerning level of dry this summer but now we are getting rain every couple days. Cool nights and all the rain has made the tomatoes unappetizing.
I grew some extra dried beans this year. I would put them with squash as an easy crop, food security, and low effort. Put the seeds in, make sure pests don't eat the plants young, then ignore them until it is harvest time. Shelling is relaxing to me but the pillow case methods make it quick if you have a higher volume.

  8. We are in South Dakota/ 7 miles from North Dakota. It was 24 degrees this morning when I got up. I don't want fall to end. We have a while to go still….I hope!

  9. Woke up to our first frost this morning. Always sad to see it go, but that means it’s wood stove season and I love building a fire every morning.

  10. Have you tried the pillow case method for Shelling beans? You just put the pods in the pillow case and wack it on the ground and the pods pop open and all the beans will be in the bottom of the pillow case.

  11. Hahaha…I LOVE how the Guneas 🦤fuss at you everytime you dare come near „their“ garden.😂 Cracks me up everytime!

  12. This has only been my third year of growing. I am learning to be more accepting when the frosts arrive at the end of the growing season. I can see now that it is part of a cycle and a time of rest for myself and my growing area.

  13. Growing dry beans on the fence around the garden is space well used for 2 person pantry. I bought butter bean seed on sale this fall for us next year.

  14. You are so lucky to have such a long season. As a New Englander I’m stuck with a shorter season, still plant a fall garden which most folks around here are pulling their gardens for the year. If needed I can use low tunnels to help extend the season. I think that’s silly, but who am I to judge. I too have a hard time letting go of the season I’m not going to confirm or deny crying about it. I’ve come to realize that’s just the way of it. Tomorrow I have a few beds to pull. I think I might plant some baby bok choy and maybe Chinese broccoli, choy sum. I’m looking forward to the seed catalogs arriving and making plans for next season. Thanks as always for sharing.

  15. I love Fall, family went to the pumpkin patch Saturday, I'm setting out pumpkins, indian corn and mums. Your chimes reminded me of your greenhouse, loved that greenhouse and the colors you had in the old garden. I love your new one also, but your old garden was my favorite, because you taught us so many things in that greenhouse and garden. My Mom and Grandma worked our gardens and I was too busy being a teenager that I didn't learn from them as I should. As an adult I regretted that, but then you came along. <3

  16. You are correct about dry beans – I still grow them though cuz it's kinda fun. We have been freezing hard here and soon the only thing growing here will be snow banks. But for today, before the rain starts, I will enjoy the sun and get the the root crops out of the ground. Good video.
