Pub bosses have been warned that the government might consider minimum alcohol pricing as part of its public health efforts.

Industry insiders said they were informed this could happen if they don’t address alcohol-related harms. A government spokesman denied any plans for minimum pricing.

The warning follows a suggestion that Labour may introduce more public health measures, like banning smoking in beer gardens. A senior figure hinted at this policy during an event, urging the industry to act or face government intervention, citing the soft drinks industry’s response to the sugar tax.

  1. I absolutely hate having to agree with Farage, but on this he’s right. As a smoker I was very happy when they stopped smoking in bars and restaurants, but give us a break, we go outside to smoke whatever the weather, if I’m on a terrace and someone is huffing and puffing about me smoking, they can piss off, I’m outside all year round, they only want to use the terrace when it’s nice and warm !

  2. It's stupid that if I sit at a picnic table outside my local and smoke it's bad but 4 steps to the left then it's ok

  3. Thank God less passive smoking why stand around entrance of train stations bus stops other public spaces smoke at home❤. Streets will be cleaner no more littering with cig butts

  4. Exactly, that will not deter people from stop smoking, they will just smoke somewhere else. It definitely WILL NOT save NHS from falling in its knees!! However, go and stop all those boats coming, that WILL definitely save hell of a lot Starmer, do you get this!?

  5. Gee if only we had some sort of international court that could protect our rights against authoritarian monsters like Kier Starmer. Maybe if we vote Reform in they will advocate such a court?

  6. If you are trying to give up smoking, going to the pub is a nightmare.
    I think you'r " I don't care" attitude is not helpful.
I am 62 , the most stupid thing I ever did is start smoking.
Don't smoke is a ridiculous thing to say , it is as addictive as heroin.
I think making it as unacceptable and as uncool as possible is a good plan personally.
It might save the next generation.

  7. All pubs should ban him.

Also if you actually think this is about your safety then I’m sorry, but you are simply stupid.

  8. The Labour party intent on seeing all public houses transformed into mosques to appease their voters, supporters and financiers.

  9. The United Kingdom is on a dangerous, destructive, disorganised and depressing journey, on route to a truly dystopian destination.

  10. If Talktv is saying it’s a bad idea then you know Israel has invested in tobacco companies

  11. Guy on the phone no doubt has a boyfriend because he sounds like a woke male Karen. He said that smokers cost the government and NHS But what about alcoholics and leaving cans on the floor and costing the NHS money what about obesity costs the NHS money as well, I hate this country so much if thing wasn't so expensive and I could actually save money each month I would be gone.

  12. Girls!! Leave your rings have a ciggie and they are there when you go back what are you drinking???

    Utter horror.

  13. Impossible to police, will have zero effect on smoking and zero affect on the NHS apart from loosing billions in tax if everyone stopped.

  14. What of a load of rubbish fuck wake up ,if world war 2 hear is they will laugh that at is what a joke saving money 😂🤣

  15. If they’re going to ban cigarettes, they should also ban alcohol and prescription medication because they are all addictive and all have side-effects

  16. I bet they will still f in spoke in Westminster. They want to take all joy away from humanity. It will be booze next, then clubs .. They are resetting the world

  17. What about the tons of sewerage being pumped into our rivers. What about the poison’s being placed into our water. And this OBVIOUS plant/actor is waffling about a few butts.. Suddenly, why suddenly?? Do folk see that communism is being slowly interwoven into our society?

  18. You can die from drink too can't you, It's up to people if they want to smoke in public or not, Can't take people's rights away from them

  19. The first smoking ban in 2007 killed the pub trade massively, generally after the ban came in, the older generation (mostly) who pop down the pub in the afternoon or evening, for a social gathering, and perhaps have just a couple of pints, and a smoke, as a daily ritual, that they have been doing for most of their lives, then decided not to bother going to the pub after their liberties have been taken away, and now just buy a couple of beers from the shop, and sit at home and smoke and drink. The people in power are idiots and cut their nose off to spite their face. I understand smoking is dangerous for your health, and I also get that some people don't like it, but why can't pubs have a seperate smoking area inside pubs? With some sort of air extraction. Many old traditional pubs have 2 bars, a men's bar, and a family bar, and they aren't used for that purpose anymore. Why not have a smoking, or non smoking section. Or just have some pubs a smoking pub, and some not.

  20. These Talk TV hosts are so facetious, do some real journalism instead of making empty statements like "My pint might get warm if I have to go outside to smoke. Let's all sit inside in a dark room because we won't get stabbed." This wasn't a very good discussion at all, I don't know what I expected now I'm thinking about it.

"What's the point of going to the pub?!"
It's not to smoke near people who are also enjoying the pub.

  21. So people will congregate outside peoples homes to smoke if they have to ‘walk down the road’ to smoke. This is draconian .

  22. This Kevin geezer sounds like a wind up. He definitely was a Billy Nomates in school. The one guy in class that asked for homework.
