We decided to rip out one of our gardens at the Northern Michigan Garden and start mostly over and replace most of it with deer resistant plants. This is a full sun to part shade garden and we deal with deer pressure. I hope you enjoy seeing our updated garden!

  1. Deer. Ugh. I'm just below you in Indiana and I wouldn't care if all of the deer fell off the earth, lol. I am in the middle of making a new garden also. I hope people take your advice about a garden that just isn't working or looking like you envisioned. It's OK to change your garden up! I have a garden overrun by blue and purple. So much so that the flowers are getting smothered. I dug up a new large bed and am making it all blue/purple and yellow/orange colors only. That leaves a red/yellow and orange "hot" colored bed and now a softer purple /blue with some yellow & orange bed. It's looking great and didn't cost me much of anything. It transformed 2 garden beds with a little redesign and mulch. I hope yours goes great! Love the cut tall grass. Hopefully the evil deer don't munch on it!

  2. Hi Heidi 🌺. Wow.
What a beauty these plants look amazing and so pretty and Rod arranged them beautifully in this garden . Have a great day .🌺🌻🌺

  3. Deer have been super active this year. Lots of fawns. Couldn't resist buying some more hydrangeas but other than that I try to only buy deer resistant plants if I need to replace something that's not working.

  4. Absolutely gorgeous colours ! Same as we use here. Good info.on the totem pole grass as a poss.replace. Thks.Heidi 🇨🇦

  5. Saw a woman somewhere who dealt with the flopping grass by going around it with a spiral braid. It looked surprisingly good and didn't hurt the grass any.

  6. Beutifully done! I've been tuning up some of my garden beds. I finally realized that just because I planned it one way doesn't mean I can't change it!

  7. Thank you for a great video Heidi ❤ I love your northern Michigan cottage and garden , I bet it is cheerful and gorgeous inside too. I work at my local botanical gardens and we also have tremendous deer pressure there also I have started planting certain plants that deer dislike as borders it’s been a trial and error process to see what actually repels them and there are 2 native plants that I use around the berry patch there and they are specific varieties; Dittony ( strong oregano taste and smell ) and aromatic aster ( very strong citronella/ herb smell and sticky leaves and stems ) . These 2 plants are very attractive as well as serve a purpose . For years now these 2 plants have been very effective as border plants to ward off deer . I also have a lot of trouble with huge rabbits ( dog size) destroying my plants all the way in the ground, I went to local dollar store and purchased wire baskets to put over my newly planted starts .

  8. I’ve caged my small hydrangeas in the past to keep the deer from nibbling them in the winter also the Chartreuse On The Loose catmint has been beautiful for me this summer, loving it!

  9. Love the new look and the plant selections are perfect! Looking forward to watching this garden mature

  10. Love the color combination Heidi. Definitely eye catching and a bright, fun spot. My last home was heavy deer pressure so they ate everything! My beautiful tulips, hydrangeas and hostas were eaten down to nubs. Sprayed them and they would last a few weeks for me to enjoy the blooms. Good luck with the new plantings. How big is the space and how many new plants did it take to fill that area? Hello from NJ
