Hannah explores a range of culinary and medicinal mushrooms being cultivated in a repurposed railway tunnel. Subscribe 🔔 http://ab.co/GA-subscribe
Hannah meets someone who found their way into the magical world of mushroom growing quite by chance.
Dean Smith bought a house at Mount Rumney, east of Hobart, that happened to have a disused railway tunnel on the property. Someone in the mushroom industry heard suggested using it to grow mushrooms – and so that’s what Dean now does!
The tunnel was built in 1891 but trains stopped running in 1926. The main mushrooms now growing here are oyster and shiitake.
Featured plants: 🍃
Oyster Mushroom (Pleurotus ostreatus)
Shiitake Mushroom (Lentinula edodes)

Hi 👋
Gardening Australia, We could share ideas and grow, wanna be friends?
I envy those naive entrepreneurs who think they can grow mushrooms in any cold damp place without proper ventilation and air filtration system.
👍👌🙂
we used to grow tons of mushrooms .
everyone who bought a KG of us said they knew a bloke
who grew mushrooms in old railway tunnels in Nsw 🤣🤣🤩🤩🤩
pretty sure when growing mushrooms your supposed to have everything extremely clean and sterile and not out in the open with all the other mould and fungi growing, those mushrooms are contaminated and will probably make you sick.
