My books and videos are all grounded in what I actually do, I make sure you can see the evidence. For example if I suggest sowing carrots in November, take a look at my monthly tours to see them growing and my harvest videos for May to see the actual results. I’m not just about regurgitaing information from the backs of seed packets!

Just because all my resources are ‘free of charge’, to everyone, doesn’t mean they aren’t good quality. My objective is to make sure that there’s no need to be rich to get access to great gardening information. I do however have a lot of costs to cover and my time is valuable to me, so please consider supporting me at https://www.buymeacoffee.com/steverichards

  1. Steve, why, on a windy site , are polycarbonate tunnels not used? We live on very windy site, so polycarbonate is vital . Tunnel was not damaged or punctured by a falling tree branch or cats.

  2. After last years expensive production of melons, am changing tack and had cut the bottom of a 200 liter drum, and cut it in half for another experiment, am going to make a hot bed in it and hope to grow 2 or 3 melons in it in the tunnel house.

  3. Holy moly, my pollycrub has cost me about £3000 to build so far and I've still not finished the doors, the 10mm twinwall polycarbonate was £1300 just for the plastic. Its quite luxurious though but not as nice as your greenhouse.

The only problem is its 28° – 30° at the hottest part of the day in there.

  4. You’re a trooper with that food mill 😂 I used mine two or three times and gave up. I now use the sieve attachment for the kitchenaid and it deskins and deseeds so much easier / quicker.

  5. The passata looks yummy Steve.
I don't bother removing skins abd seeds these days. I found out there is more lycopene in the skins and digestive amino acids in the seeds so thought, why throw all.that out? My Ninja is small but does a fair job of whizzing and making into sauce.

  6. Looking at what little other UK gardeners have harvested this year due to wet spring weather, slugs and snails, dips in overnight temperatures and latterly high daytime temperatures then the recent gale it's a wonder you aren't sat in a corner with a blanket over your head!!
I'd definitely have another go with melons next year, surely it has to be better than this year!
Think of the juice and flavor of last years crop.
    Fabulous carrots by the way.

  7. Hi Steve
I know you use a dehydrator and the time has come for me to buy one. I only need a 5 tray one and am thinking of an Excalibur . Like most beginners I shall probably start with apple slices and graduate onto fruit leathers. Any advice? Thanks. Nuka.

  8. And what happened to the onion and pepper pieced? Did you pick them out before straining or just left them in and strained the whole mix – whatever got through is fine?

  9. Loved the video. So much going on, its fab. Its great to see what you do with your tomatoes. Ive brought the book from your recommendations a while ago, just need a few more tomatoes ti give it a try. My melons have suffered terribly this year. I also thought because last year they were growing so fantastic that they would be fine thus year. Blooming weather and slugs. Never mind its part of the journey. Any way, have a great week gardening and i look forward to, as ever, to your next video xx

  10. I was just talking yo my partner about passata, cos i have tomatoes every where and then u did this video. Great help.

Ive a question, have u ever tried to over winter a pepper plant? If so any tips or suggestions.

  11. I'm in Ireland and so am used to the wind. I, for budget reasons, use the cheap green poly tunnels, but I have erected the 2m high wind netting around mine and along with a wind-blocking dense fuchsia hedge and generous amounts of gorilla tape have so far kept mine from ending up in the Irish sea.

  12. When hot water bathing tomatoes do you add any citric acid to increase the acidity ? Can you use jars with screw lids like jam jars ?

  13. If you ever have a surplus of cherry tomatoes you can can them. Its so much quicker to do than passata.theyre not a substitute for passata but can be a useful addition to the store. I use them for bacon and tomato butties and fry ups. I even use them to make a sauce for an occasional quick pasta based dinner. Basically anything where you wouldnuse a tin of tomatoes or cook with tomatoes. They can be used to make salsa too. Anyway for anyone interested this is the best tutorial ive found. The video is a quick overview but in the description theres a link to a written detailed recipe and tutorial with links to recipe ides that you can use the canned cherry tomatoes for. Its a great channel, she has lots of great no frills concise canning videos, and also has a video about freezing tomatoes in case you dont have enough to do a batch of canning, or if you havent time to can them…then you can can them eother whenyou have enough, or when you have time. Its a great idea and has changed my life with regards to the pressures of canning.

Heres the cherry tomato canning video: https://youtu.be/HhcIkPGhD5Y?si=XL-8qx-B76J6USgA

Heres the link to the freezing tomatoes video (its pretty easy ans obvious really): https://youtu.be/PdGsj5s3-4Y?si=CLgEKpKyPhTmcMMw
