Carolina Irving welcomes us into her romantic retreat in an unspoilt coastal region of Portugal. When Carolina purchased the property nearly 15 years ago, there was barely one wall left standing from the previous structure. She accepted the challenge, undaunted, and has created a home that is perfectly compact, where nothing is unaccounted for.

Not simply a weekend pied-à-terre, Carolina’s house had to function as a year-round escape from her home in Paris — for herself, her partner, French documentary producer Bertrand Devaud. Watch the full episode of ‘Design Notes’ as we tour Carolina Irving’s Portuguese home from home.

    The nasturtiums in the green vase epitomises the spirit of this home. We have an artist in Australia called Margaret Olley whose home had vases of flowers everywhere – for me the utmost luxury.

    I have been struggling with my home space. It just doesn’t represent my personality. I knew I needed color and texture but I’ve been stuck. The other day I can across a beautiful hand painted plate on FB marketplace and I thought about buying it but I didn’t! Seeing Carolina’s home inspired me! Next time I’m drawn to an item with color and pattern I’m going to go with it!

    So personal and eclectic ! Love her own choices all blended together . She' has a beautiful speaking voice too ! Her eloquence and the language of the interiors flow beautifully ! The simple lines of the exterior and the garden are special too 🙏🌸🌼
