In this video, Dr. Green has shown you how you can grow Caralluma Tuberculata at home. Common names of Caralluma Tuberculata are caralluma, bitter cress, and tuberculate caralluma. It is an edible cactus. This video is for USDA zone 10 and above. First, we will talk about caralluma’s natural habitat. They grow in the shade of bushes etc on the mountains. It means caralluma likes partial shade and gravely soil. Let start the process of how we can grow caralluma at home.
First, we will make soil mix, but we have to keep natural habitat in mind.
Soil mix for caralluma should be comprised of 2 parts garden soil, 2 parts sand, 1 part farmyard manure or compost, and 2 parts gravels. Then mix all these ingredients very well.
Then, make an inclined plane or ridges of this soil mix. We are actually creating a mountain habitat for caralluma to grow. A rocky and sloping surface won’t allow rain or irrigation water to stagnate but will run off. As I’ve mentioned earlier that caralluma loves partial shade. So, green net or green cloth is compulsory. You don’t have to build a large lath house. Just buy a green net according to your requirement and make a small lath house by using sticks etc. If you don’t have a green net, then do this whole process under the shade of a tree. If you don’t have a tree, then choose a spot that receives only morning sunlight for 2-3 hours.
Buy fresh caralluma with or without roots from the greengrocer and plant them on this sloping surface. The best time to plant caralluma is early spring.
