Hi, I just bought a house and I have a huge lawn and I am not sure what to do with it for now. I have future plans but I need to save up for now. I am saving up for trees at the moment. Shall I pull all the weeds?! Someone said to me that I should do it before they seed. But if I pull them, do I plant grass seed where I have pulled them up to replace weeds? Also I think I need to get someone to mow the lawn as I only have an automatic lawnmower robot thing to mow with – gifted to me – lol! Should I move it then pull weeds or what should I do in the meantime. Any advice appreciated! Thanks ! Attached photos of all my weeds

Done that with 4 new lawns. If you like me want to avoid the chemical route do what I did as I can honestly say it worked. First cut not to low pick up the grass and then just keep mulching it there after every few days ( yes it’s summer 😯) it will take you time to go over it with a light cut and you’ll be thinking ‘am I even cutting it?’ but believe me after a few weeks you’ll see hardly any weeds and lush grass

Buy whips or small trees and let them grow rather then saving for bigger tree. They will be healthier long term, will adapt better to your soil, and you will have more varieties to choose from. Bare root berry canes are also a cheaper way to go.

I would hire a local kid with a petrol mover to chop it low and de-thatch the old dead grass that will be below.

It looks like a nightmare but it’s not so bad. The buttercup is the only painful one to manage.

Get yourself a compost bin (or diy one with pallets or make a heap with a few blocks to keep it tidy) and do a little bit at a time, you’ll have broken the back of it with a few weeks using only hand tools.

Or if you fancy something totally different; check out r/nolawns – there’s good resources for Irish gardens on Pollinators.ie, if you scroll down through the resources you’ll see one for gardens. [Pollinators Resources](https://pollinators.ie/resources/)

The docks are seeding, but not difficult to get rid of with a hand fork. The thistles ditto. The creeping buttercup will take over and is difficult to eradicate.

Create some flowerbeds or shrubbery to attract pollinators, so you can eradicate the weeds in the grass, if you’re intent on a lawn. But mix some clover with the lawn to fix nitrogen.

I’d dispose of the weeds in the brown bin rather than home compost them, as some weed seeds can last a few years.
