I’ve had this and genuinely thought it was just carelessness when earthing up or clipping them with a spade when digging. Either way, still grand to eat

Same thing happens in tomatoes if you give them too much water when it’s warm. The fruit swells as the plant stores it in it. Then the fruits skin rips and heals.
