I’m not sure if that is just normal life cycle stuff or rot, and if it is rot is there anything I can do to save the plant?

    It looks like rot unfortunately. I don’t know if you can save it (I never succeeded). But maybe someone more experienced will speak.

    It could be rot. If it were me, I’d unpot it, remove the old leaves that are not absorbed fully, and leave it out bare rooted for a day or two before repotting it. No guarantees but that has worked for me a few times if the plant wasn’t already too far gone.
