Recently moved into a new house with a much bigger garden, lots of mature trees and plants. Really lovely! With that said there is a bit of tidying up to be done. I’ve a few examples like this where it looks like all sorts are growing through the original plants. What’s the best way to tackle this apart from just trimming the lot to improve its shape.

Complete beginner in gardening terms, in case it wasn’t obvious from the question. 😁

  1. You can definitely cut them both back to shape them but well worth waiting a few months until the plants go a bit more dormant and also there is a good possibility you have nesting birds in there and definitely best not to disturb them at the moment.

Shape them and see what you are dealing with then….

Leave alone for a while as the other poster is saying.
Best not to give an extreme haircut or move anything at the moment. Just watch the place and where the sunshine is, sun for how many hours a day in different parts of the garden etc. that’ll all assist planning for next year! It’s a bit of a long game! If anything – get some things in containers or pots for this year if you want to add to the garden!

Don’t be clever or subtle with this kind of shrub. Just wait until November then cut it right back deep.

If you do want to be careful get some loppers and secateurs and trace the main growths back and cut ahead of a budding point having decided what size shubb you’re happy to have. Once you’ve got one section trimmed it’s easy! You’ll also get a better view of whatever else is in there at the base, and be able to dig it out if needed.

Thanks for the replies folks! So possibly room for a slight tidy, but don’t go with any substantial movement for a couple of months. Good shout re the birds nesting too. I’m not in a mad rush anyway, as there’s plenty of other bits to be taking care of in the meantime.

Assuming a good cut back later in the year, whats the routine to ensure I don’t end up with plants growing through one another again? By the way, that’s the same plant from two different sides. So it’s pretty wild at the moment.
