Thank you!
All of this is exactly how I feel. It has been nice to not have triple digits this time of year. It was a MONDAY for me when I had to go inside twice for bandaids. I got a new hori hori knife and it is nice and sharp. I decided I should not use anything that would hurt me by about 8:30 this morning since I could tell it was going to be one of those kind of days.
I'm right here with you, Amanda! It's too stinking hot and life's a lot right now.
I notice and appreciate your new wall decor. That sign! 😄
It's like housework, cooking, or any job or task that sometimes feels like a never-ending cycle. First, I look for ways to simplify, streamline, cut back to sheer basics, and even outsource part of it if I can swing it somehow. But my best mood lifter is to share the load with a good friend. Somehow, cleaning, cooking, or gardening with a friend, whether at her house or mine, makes the process lighter and more joyful–or at least more entertaining. If nothing else, misery loves company! Plus, we can enjoy a spot of refreshment and a good visit to catch up on being seen and appreciated as a whole person apart from the tasks that threaten to define our existence. I love my garden, but I'm more than a gardener.
Hi Amanda this is timely as always. I carried and put down 20 bags of compost in the last two days. I’m 65 and struggle with back issues and arthritis so I was pretty pleased with myself. I don’t garden as much as you do but what I have I want to keep enriched and well kept. I’m in zone 3 so my season is short, things don’t tend to get as big as I’d like but I’ve come to terms with that. I’ve learned that I need to keep things manageable so I don’t burn out. Loved this video !
I like your garden because you don't have a huge amount of land. You are a typical home gardener. That is more like the majority of us. I wish my garden was as beautiful as yours. I always get good tips from you. I've started more seeds this year than ever before. Mainly due to you. Maybe today is the best tip in our Texas heat… Let it go… Thank you for all you do.
I can tell you I will burn out on planting all these plants. Don't mind starting trays but digging holes is a whole other story! I like you because you are real. 9B Florida
Zone 8B. By August, I’m done! 2000 sq. ft. garden. 4 raised beds and about 30 mineral tubs full of vegetables. Harvesting, shelling, canning. I’m done! Lol. It’s too hot for anything outside. On the other hand, I spent all day up potting flower seedlings for my fall flowers. Lol. Hot as hades but it had to be done. I’m dreaming of fall. Of course our fall fills like summer. 😂
Zone 8a metro Atlanta. Other than basic maintenance, I’m not doing much in the garden now.
Zone 9 here in Cypress, TX. Burn out? Yup, I'm there with you, girl. July hasn't been kind to us down here near the Gulf of Mexico. Hurricane Beryl, then a week and a half of rain hasn't been much of an incentive to work in the gardens. The hurricane destroyed a lot of my plants, and the heavy rains have me dealing with, of all things, root rot!!!! It's not pretty. I had to laugh when you said the only thing you would plant this time of year was purslane, sunflowers and zinnias because that's exactly what I planted yesterday! On a positive note, my St Augustine grass looks amazing. I enjoy your videos because, I can relate to you and learn so much from you. There's no way I can relate to the "mega garden show" creators who obviously have an unlimited budget and resources. Keep on doing what you're doing because we all really, really like it.
I really love this video and hearing you express how real gardening burnout can be. You provide such awesome helpful tips and smart advice on how to manage when we are feeling overwhelmed or feeling inadequate. Thank you for reminding me that I am not alone and making me realize that it’s ok to take a break and search for inspiration in different ways👏🏻🥰
Amen to that. Burnout about now. The weeds are nuts and we are in our 3rd heat wave in kansas city mo zone 6b. I rotation water the beds and pick the ripe tomatoes. That is it. I pull myself out of a funk by planning for next seasons garden, collecting seeds, and just like you look and read gardening books.
Thank you so much. I really needed this today. Zone 9b with heat
waves, rocky soil, rabbits, voles, moles and gophers – but still getting a great tomato harvest and some ornamentals surviving. Some years are hard, and I “needed” permission to take a break and just cook some eggplant and tomatoes without having shame about not having a perfect garden!
I love that you are so real and relateable. Thanks for your videos. Know that you are making a difference and appreciated.
This is the time of year that tests your love of gardening. It’s hot! So hot but so far much better than last summer. Thank goodness! These last couple of weeks haven’t been so bad and I actually got a lot done. Some days I feel like gardening is like going to a gym. I don’t want to work but once I get dressed and get out the door I can do it and feel good about what I accomplished. The next 4 weeks will be just watering and trying to keep everything alive. I do want to get some seeds planted so this is a good time to work inside. 😁 It helps to step back and just look at all of the beautiful plants and how nice it all looks. Makes it all worthwhile.
Totally agree with you. I just ripped out my tomatoes yesterday. My okra and cream peas are going nuts and keeping me busy trying to preserve…electric pressure canner just pooped out…waiting on new one to come in….
🪴🪴🪴 Very timely advice. I’m able to garden on the weekends due to my day job and that’s ok. I didn’t try to grow any vegetables this year. And I realized that I don’t enjoy that anyway. I enjoy flowers and herbs and propagating and giving away plants to friends. ❤ take it easy!
I go through wanting to just give up entirely on my yard every summer. When the Bermuda and bindweed start growing through everything and I can't dig it out because the ground is like concrete.
The garden is very forgiving….
I have tons of Pinterest ideas saved. I also take pictures of landscaping at restaurants, gas stations, and the industrial park I work at. Thanks for the ideas!
Hang in there! Great tips to get through the dog days😅 I put my hanging baskets on drip and that is the only reason why they are still alive!! 😂
I think your video hits major points in our garden life. Thank u SO much!
Amanda, this videos timing is perfect!!! I'm in California in zone 9b, we have a dry heat here in Sonoma Co. This summer has been HOT. Many hot days then two weeks in a row over 100. Even the roses got burned up, not just flowers and leaves – the canes! It is discouraging after putting so much effort into the nurturing and care. BUT!! like you said it's all part of the process, the part I dont like . . . Lets face it once we dont have a summer vacation off school anymore, its kind of overrated! Thank you for being real and speaking honestly about your energy levels, mood and feelings about the ups and downs of gardening and life, it really helps!
I have severe arthritis in my right knee that will not allow me to even maintain things. Looking at knee surgery in near future. I’m so upset that this is going to put me back for a long time in even getting in my garden. Your video helps to make me realize that it will always be there and I can stop fretting over it. Thank you, love watching you videos, down to earth!
I live in the low AZ desert, zone 9 b, with temps above 110 and no rainfall. The heat makes it almost impossible to get everything done. I have left some plants go without water or I have to get up just after the sun comes up and then I go back out 6:30 pm until dark to do more. I have to remember that I don't want to plant anything new for the summer garden. Getting ready to grow in our beautiful fall, winter and early summer. I left a local gardening group because it became political and it just wasn't fun any more. I appreciate when we leave our political opinions out of our gardening life!!!
Hi 7a. It's the season of hotness 🥵. Last year was so much cooler and I was able to get more things done. But the long stretch of heat this year just takes the energy out. Thanks so much for your videos. I started a YouTube just to document my progress. And FB marketplace is amazing for the treasure hunts ❤. Keep cool! One day closer to cooler temps 🌻
🤗
Great subject. I enjoyed hearing what you had to say and related to it. You are inspiring. Thanks.
I spend so much time and energy trying to keep my plants alive in the summer. Each year in my southeastern NC coastal garden, zone 8b, is hotter than the year before. Not to mention, I get so dang tired of seeing gardens on YouTube that the critters don't ravage every day. Usually some time in August, a little switch just flips, and I am done. I can just let those plants go. Plants get tired too. I think expecting plants to go from early April into November (my last frost) might be unrealistic. Also, USDA hardiness zones drive me nuts! A plant rated zones 3-8 has a HUGE and maybe unlikely range. Being zone 8b, I am not really in that plant's sweet spot.
You are not alone in the burnout and frustration zone.
Omg!!! I though it was only me feeling like this. I just don't want to do anything. I was afraid maybe it was depression since i suffered from it and gardening helps so much. But it is so hot and I feel so drained. I been paying for gym membership for the last 3 years and never went. Lord and behold. I wake up at 4 am and be in the gym from 5 sm to 6:15 am. That actually helped me and now I go outside and do little work at a time.
Thanks for this. You are right on about the Heat. I’m in the Memphis area not as hot as Texas but really once it gets above 90 in the south just why, why, be outside. I feel bad for my plants having to be outside.
I would love to hear you talk about what plants you choose to grow from seed vs. purchase as plants. Particularly perennials? Are mums worth growing from seed? What about salvias, Lavender, others….??
Also, it would be interesting to hear more about your journaling habits/method. I also journal about my plants and would say that my organization on what/how I journal is still evolving.
Again, I’m just outside Memphis, Tn. In Collierville it’s now a zone 8a but we still have winters very much more in line with zone 7.
Take a break, recharge and regroup; but please don’t stop. I love your channel. I took the leap to start annuals from seed this year because of watching your success and your instructional videos and update seedling videos are AMAZING best on-line!!
I feel as burned out as my Fort Worth garden looks! 🤣 I had a super productive spring and was looking forward to a similar summer. Then I fell in the first week of June, breaking both wrists and 5 fingers. I've been pressing my face to the windows all summer, watching weeds multiply and many of my baby plants from the spring die a slow death. I have also been enjoying the flowers and greenery that my husband is kindly watering even though he is not a gardener. It's been a summer of "enjoy the good enough." Soon enough, the casts will come off, the temperature will be less hellish, and my PT effort will pay off. Meanwhile , I will be inspired by videos like yours… Beautiful, honest, and encouraging. Gardening is a long game. Thanks for your constancy. ❤
I’m threatening to going back to growing a lawn… not going to do it but I’m just saying!!!
Same here! I'm in San Antonio and going back to work so double whammy!
You are right on about burnout especially this time of year. It’s very hot and muggy here in zone 6. I have managed to get out in the morning to do some deadheading and pull a few weeds but the sweat just start pouring. I am retired now but remember gardening around my two kids. Although I have much more gardens then I used to it’s good to know that I don’t have to have perfect flower beds. Thank you.
You are singing my song with this video! I am zone 9…over 100 for weeks now. I have a huge yard garden and I flower Farm. I am so hot and burned our! I sing to myself daily,,,,I smell B U R N O U T…LOL
