Welcome to our self reliant homestead! Join us, Shawn, Dervla, and our dog Cali as we create a resilient, abundant and sustainable ecosystem that feeds our families from the land in Ontario Canada. Using permaculture as our guide, we strive to become independent in water, food, energy and shelter, focused on beauty in form and efficiency in function.
Our Self Reliance is a life of compromise between my two daughters and my wife’s preference for culture, comfort and formality, and I, with my love of chaotic and beautiful but challenging and often uncomfortable wilderness living. The resulting homesteads are an eclectic blend of modern with traditional, whimsical with practical, formal with informal, civilized with rustic.
Over the last five years, my wife and I designed and built our dream homesteads from scratch with very little outside help; from undeveloped, declining forest to a comfortable home and cabin with a prolific edible landscape for people and wildlife equally. For many years, we have strived to lessen our burden on others by taking full responsibility for the health and welfare of our immediate family while building a strong community around us, both online and offline. Now that the infrastructure is in place here, we will be spending more time working cooperatively with community members, including extended family, to collectively become more resilient while living a deeply satisfying and meaningful life. It’s obviously meant to be confusing for security reasons and for that I totally understand and happy to have given up trying to figure out where your gardens are. Where your workshop, log mill, blueberries, tractor, wood sheds, rivers. streams, chickens etc are. Not GPS location or proximity of each location, just what is on what property and why. It doesn’t matter other than my interest in your approach to soil acidity, soil growth, types of trees and how you approach permaculture food growth and storage for your family, domesticated and wild animals. I’m guessing you grow food everywhere and distribute it throughout each home/cabin equally. I don’t mind and suspect no one else minds as long as you and your family stay healthy and we see the content, tips, tricks, wilderness, daily life, skills and Cali.
Question. Will you be getting battery operated flying boots as a winter back up for travelling between properties? 😃

Do you make salves of the Comfrey, Stinging Nettle etc….. I know your busy but you can build your pharmacy from these and other plants. Comfrey roots as an example ….
What variety of sorghum are you growing? I thought it couldn’t be grown in the north
I find Keto to be a real PITA. All the skills I acquired over the decades, in bread making and pie creation and stretching meals with potatoes, are wasted.

Have learned a lot from you folks over the years, and have been inspired to approach more projects with confidence, projects that I wouldn't have dreamed of taking on previously. Regarding the grass in your garden, in our small-town location, more and more "ornamental" tall grasses have become invasive species. I find all 3 of your channels valuable — thanks!

I watch all four channels, as I've mentioned before, any Shawn time is a good time.
As a very young lad, years and years and years ago, our family would sit down every Sunday evening after dinner with our popcorn, and watch The Wonderful World of Disney. This was back when Walt was still alive and the content was family safe and wholesome. Your channels take me back to that time, and give me hope, happiness and inspiration.
