I ordered these little guys from Etsy. They are a fair bit smaller than as expecting and I’ve got some questions!! I tried reading the guides and watching some videos, but I can’t quite find the answers to these. I am happy to provide more pictures of anything and any help is greatly appreciated!

  1. How can I tell how old these are?

  2. Does the fact that there are so many in one container cause them to be smaller? Like they could be older, but just didn’t grow as much because of being so crowded?

  3. Of course they came in all organic soil 🙄..Assuming they are babies do I leave them in there? Or should I report to my 90/10 organic/inorganic mix(the mix is fine pumice/lava rocks/course sand/sifted succulent mix)?

  4. There are a lot of dead leaves, am I ok to remove those?

  5. There are also pretty long thin roots. Ranging from 1-2” long. Should I trim them down when I replant them?

  6. If they are babies.. will I want to follow more of a seedling watering schedule? Does anyone have a good one?

Thanks again so much!!!!

I’ve had multiple little things like these guys, they’re so funky! I think these guys look about a year old, and it might be possible that being so compacted hinders their growth as they have no more room to spread their roots. If you’d like to keep them all, then I definitely recommend putting them in your own soil. I sell them individually from clumps like these, and they do fine in the soil they come with short term, but long term I’m confident it wouldn’t work out as well. Yes you can remove the dead leaves, but if you’re already separating them all then I’d recommend doing that afterwards so you don’t decapitate any of them (like I have in the past 😭). As you remove them from each other, their roots already kind of trim themselves and because they’re so small, I wouldn’t do anything to the roots other than separating. Finally, water like normal as these guys already have their “true” leaves. I hope this helps!
