THANK YOU FOR WATCHING & THE CONTINUOUS SUPPORT! I COULDNT DO THIS WITHOUT YOU!
hey guys welcome back today I’m going to give you a tour of my backyard garden here in the month of May if you’re new here hi I’m Bri I live in Kansas Zone 7A and I’m really excited to show you guys everything it’s currently fully planted minus a few spots and everything really is starting to kind of take at this point and grow a little bit more so I’m really excited to show you everything so let’s go ahead and just jump right in the garlic is starting to scape which means we are starting to get into the last about 4ish weeks of the garlic typically I’ve been harvesting around the second week of June last year it was the first week of June and right now I’m thinking this will be probably closer to the second week of June because it’s really only really fully escaping with the Georgian fire I’m starting to get a few others so I have three different varieties of hard neck I have chesnik red Georgian fire and then I have Italian purple then I also have um some soft neck over here so this one won’t actually Escape soft neck garlic um doesn’t esape at all so so um that’s only a hard neck garlic thing but I am starting to get some really good ones on the Georgian fire that I want to show you and I want to explain what I will be looking for over the next handful of weeks when it comes to um The Garlic I love looking back at Old garden tours from years prior and this garlic this year just looks so much better than previous years and it’s a lot taller than last year’s like all the varieties cuz I’ve grown chesnok now every single year that I’ve grown garlic I really like ches red this Georgian fire is one of the um varieties that is known to be a bigger variety um but the plants are just beautiful yeah let me show you what the garlic Scapes are currently looking like I actually do need to harvest um probably a few this morning actually I have a few really starting to curl at this point so the Scapes are edible they are very light in a garlic flavor almost like a garlic chai the other day I actually pulled one off and sliced it really thin and I used it in um twice baked mashed potatoes and it was really good so it gave me the idea that I actually want to harvest these slice them really thin and freeze dry them so then that way I can throw them into like dips or soups or uh garnish them like for a stir fry and I think that would be a great way to do them this is the first year I’ve ever had a freeze dryer when um the Scapes have appeared in previous years I would just blanch them and then throw them in the freezer and take a few out but I mean I’m really excited because I could also powder them down and have garlic scape powder so yeah I’m going to harvest a few today and all I do here is I go to the very base and see you can see that snapped really really easily so that is the whole garlic scape there so I’m really excited to chop them up and try and try to freeze dry them honestly um I had that idea and I was like that sounds so good so uh that’s the plan for these this year um at least for now I’ll have a few rounds again because not all the escapes are fully appearing um with the soft neck variety uh like I mentioned you do not get escape with those this is my first year growing um a soft neck variety so I do need to double check a few things but I’m sure it’s like anything else so with um oh my gosh I have to show you this so I just noticed I have um green lacewing eggs chilling right here I just now started to see a few Flyers around um but yeah those are full uh lace Wing eggs I will show you in a second uh once I explain this so when it comes to the garlic the Scapes are kind of the first thing to appear um that’s your indicator that uh your garlic is really going to start dying off like mine really started to Yellow just a little bit more this week and I could really tell it wasn’t like at its full Peak greenness and just height at that point cuz the scates are starting to appear so what I like to do is kind of once half of these bottom leaves um turn brown and die off that’s a good indicator that is probably a good time to pull it because each one of these leaves uh represents a papery it’s that papery skin that’s wrapped around your garlic that’s what each one of these leaves are so if you let too many of the leaves die back you’re exposing that clove um and it can end up rotting in the ground so once like half the amount of leaves have died back um that’s a good time that I typically pull it and for me that’s always been around the second week of June last year year was a little bit earlier and again like last year my garlic started to die back a lot earlier I feel like and it wasn’t as tall I feel like it was a little bit more Brown at this point but yeah that’s what a garlic scape looks like and that’s what I’ll be looking for over uh the next handful of weeks which is crazy we’re already at that time with garlic I love garlic for that but let me show you these uh lace Wing eggs all right there we go there are the lace Wing eggs so this is a Green Lace Wing egg and green lace Wings also help with aphids um I ended up releasing them in my seconde garden and I’ve never had relase them again I always end up finding their eggs somewhere yeah that is what a Green Lace Wing egg looks like this is a flower stock so if I were to leave this this would end up producing a flower and Seed but um I actually go ahead and harvest these off so when you go to harvest your garlic Escape you just go all the way down on the garlic plant it should snap pretty easily and there you go so these two beds here are all of my hard neck varieties this is Italian purple I also have a row back here of chesnok but majority of this is all chesnok and then you can see this is the Georgian fire you can see just how much bigger the leaves and the plants are just they’re bigger they’re Fuller they’re a little bit taller than everything else and the Georgian fire was the first to put on Scapes but this might be one of those things this year where I might not Harvest all the garlic all at the same time just depending I’m going to just kind of keep an eye on everything these Scapes are appearing uh when the chesnok um really hasn’t put on many yet there’s a few in the chesnok uh maybe over there but they’re really tiny at this point there has been a decent amount um put on by the Italian purple um these are chesnok right here and they already have theirs forming So within like the next week week and a half all of them will probably be um formed at that point I went and grabbed a jacket because it’s a little bit chilly this morning to be honest um but the strawberry cage so I actually been leaving this lid open the last few days because out of nowhere let me put this down gently I don’t want it slam um I’ve been getting a good amount of berries but the berries have been small and I was like Google why are my strawberries small and it can say it can be a pollination issue but like I’m still getting a few like this is a actually a really decent size Berry like I’m getting a few good siiz berries this one’s a pretty standard size Berry this one’s small they’ve been averaging more on the size of this little guy so that’s not exactly what I uh want to see so I’m just trying to figure that out at the moment so like all of these these look good but for the most part they’ve been averaging a little bit smaller like this one another thing I like to do with um the strawberry leaves that I’ll be doing really soon is harvesting these and I’ll freeze dry them or you can just dry them regularly and you can use these for te just like you would um a raspberry leaf honestly every year you Garden you can have a completely different outcome with something you can be really successful one year or something and then next year do everything the complete same but the weather can be a little bit different and you’ll have a completely different outcome so it’s always interesting to see the differences between those things from year to year but okay here up front so I have various pots of different herbs over here I have Rosemary I have a few parsley this is oregano and mint I have the is also scattered throughout the garden as well as you will see I have some eona here some zenyas and then I also planted lavender and those three are the same just opposite here is my chamomile plant that volunteered itself um honestly I need to get to harvesting it again this thing has been blowing up going crazy I’ve harvested from it a few times now I think last time I showed you this it wasn’t even like fully going but where yeah there it is you see the ladybug right there it’s not really focusing on it but there’s been so many ladybugs on this camomile this will open up a little bit to come the afternoon this is around 2: in the afternoon and as you can see all of the flowers have really really opened up I just came out to go ahead and get some of that harvested um but I have some sunflowers planted here on on each side and then I also have some Cosmos on each side this is where I have all of my cantaloupe planted so all the cantaloupe C came up really well but I’m really excited to have cantaloupe here in this front space because I think that would be really pretty over this Archway and just the leaves being really full compared to the cherry tomatoes I’ve had in past years I also have some more zenas and sunflowers here in the back Corners too but here in my two big pots I have I have bright light Cosmos and looks like we’re getting a few starting to pop this is my uh culinary sage plant um I had this plant now I want to say for a minimum of four to 5 years and it put on these really pretty flowers and they’re starting to drop at this point but it still think it’s really cool and I also overwintered my white sage from last year and it’s doing really well I want to go ahead and get this cut and get the new growth um going by itself so I’ll probably Harvest this here pretty soon as well um but I have some a more oregano mint and rosemary like I said just in pods line throughout and then we also have a good amount of carrots over here that are doing really well we’ve had some pretty consistent rains over the last few weeks um and I feel like the carrots are really loving it over here I also have this volunteer cam me and now that I say that there’s literal ladybug larvae so I want I got into this um last week I believe um in my video it may have been the week before um but I talked about how I haven’t sprayed my garden in a few years and the beneficial bug populations have been just going crazy I have not released anything in the yard and I want to say 3 years when it comes to like ladybugs or Green Lace Wings my ladybug populations are so good um I’ve seen so much larvae over in this area they really really loved the lettuce and they really helped me out with the lettuce um the lettuce will probably be out here I would say lettuce around here typically starts to go around mid June so I’m looking at about a month’s time before lettuce really comes out of the garden I did plant a second wave over in one of my really really um shaded spots so I was just kind of doing that as an experiment to see I am going to be planting out some more seeds sometime this week um for when the garlic comes out so when the garlic comes out here in the next like four to five weeks like I mentioned um it’s going to be one of those things where I’m going to have some open space so I have some peppers downstairs I plan to plant out that are from the first wave that I’m up hotting and then I also wanted to get another wave of tomatoes going um and I’m going to plant a squash uh over there as well um and there’s a few things I need to get ordered I need to get cucumbers ordered and things like that but I’m starting to get into that second secession um actually when this lettuce comes out here I will just let it be because here on the trellis I have um honeydew planted and I’m so excited about honeydew and I want to give that extra airf flow so this will come out the moment that this really starts to take up and grow and I have the Sprouts currently popping up but the lettuce this year has done so well for me I’ve harvested this so many times there’s a few heads I fully have cut completely at the base and they’re actually starting to grow back so I may just leave them and continue to do that and we’ll see how it goes over the summer uh but typically lettuce for me starts to bolt in June because we get we start to get really hot we’ve been in like a consistent 70s little route for a while now but we’re starting to get see some more 80s in the forecast so uh we will see but we’ve been averaging around like 55 5 to 60 at night so we’ve been in like this nice little sweet spot for a while um but the lettuce has been thriving and loving it and it’s done really well for me and I keep harvesting the bottom leaves for the most part um and it’s still just absolutely thriving right now this chamomile was also one that I did not plant all the chamomile in my garden volunteered itself over the last few years and it’s been so nice because I get this super abundant wave of Chom Mill right at the beginning of gardening season in and I can just kind of like focus on that cuz it’s a very tedious thing to harvest to be honest you um just take even though I don’t want to harvest it at this current moment cuz you want to wait for like the morning dew to pass you want it to be a drier time when you harvest it and you also want these um petals to be flared out but I just Tred to uh Pinch at the base here and I harvest it uh like that so I do that for each one and you can see how long that can take when you have a good amount of Cam and that right there is ladybug larvae I’m telling you the beneficial bugs this year have been thriving in the garden but here is the lettuce and there’s one of the heads I told you that I cut at the base if you do leave it surprise surprise it will try to grow back I needed to thin it out a little bit so you can see how just great these heads of lettuce truly are this one over here is actually really good as well we’ve been eating a lot of salads um and we still have a good good amount of lettuce going on and it looks so good here are the little honeydews which Speaking of let me go ahead and just thin out these guys I went around the other day and did this throughout the garden but I obviously didn’t get to the Honeydew feel like I got to this side yeah this side looks good yeah there’s our little honeydew plants and over here we have all of our Yara we do have some eona over there as well that you can’t really see but I feel like this is blooming a lot earlier this year than it did last year but we have this really really beautiful pink Yaro uh this one also looks like it is pink I do have some white I bet that one’s over there will end up being white but yeah we have all of our Yaro already starting to bloom which is really cool and then we have some more oregano Rosemary and mint now the sun’s coming out and I feel like I don’t need the jacket but let’s talk about onions so I feel like they’re doing really really well I also mentioned to you guys as a little concerned because we had a lot of wind and the wind just made all of the greens bend over but I was re-watching again last year’s May Garden Tour just because I really love to see the comparison and the onions looked a lot like this and they did really really well and they also stored really well so I was worried that the green GRE were going to break off and end up introducing fungal diseases which I did have some greens like completely snap and completely break so I have sprayed an organic fungicide on these just to kind of like counter anything so again we’ve also just had a wet few weeks where we’ve had consistent rains which is a good thing but not if like your greens are breaking and then like things can get wet and dewy but things are looking really really good the other greens are starting to stick up really well um and they’re just doing really well the bases are really really thick the idea for this is like the first to second week of July that the onions will be harvested I mean things are doing really well so with onions uh daylight does trigger the uh how they bulb so you do have to pick a variety for your latitude area and for me that is an intermediate day variety so this is a variety called calibra it is supposed to be a higher storage variety I found that it’s one of the higher ones I can find for the intermediate day onions um so that’s the one I grew last year and I really liked it it had a good flavor it stored really well um and it did really well for me and this year it’s looking like it’s also still doing pretty well for me for example like that one completely snapped off so I have been watching a few of the areas but again I think we are pretty okay minus the fact I just I’m seeing this little guy on my onion yeah I don’t want you on here buddy sorry I hate when I do that I hate when they fall and then I can’t find them where did you go why are you on my onion most of the time things don’t mess with onions well anyway as you can see this is what the base of the onion is currently looking like it’s looking really really good so I’m pretty I’m pretty happy about that with the onions this year and also the garlic the one thing I have done different is use the fish and seaweed fertilizer and I just feel like it’s making such a difference things are just doing honestly so well this year I planted a sunflower right here and then we have our lofas and then a ton of P green beans yeah you can see the Lua has now already completely latched on looks like we have our first little fruit area right there so we’ll see if that’s our first loofah that forms or not this one over here I don’t think has latched on yet it’s getting close I feel like maybe today it finally will but we also just have a ton of Po green beans over here as well so this is the year I’m trying to redeem myself when it comes to green beans so I really wanted to devote a good amount of space when it comes to the green beans and I’m really excited to see how this trellis will look over the next few months and how it will be different compared to other years cuz green beans are so fast growing I’m really excited to see like how fast they may cover this trellis cuz I’ve really always done more so bush beans in the past I’ve like played around with a few po beans but never to where I’m like giving them a ton of trellis space so I’m really excited to see the difference there when it comes to the pool beans so uh we we see over here the only thing I don’t have planted over here currently is I actually did leave a little bit of space for cucumbers I need to get those seeds ordered I have them up on my computer so I’ll do that ear uh later on today um but I am going to plant a few cucumbers I don’t want to do many cucumbers honestly this is the year I don’t even really want to do deal with pickling um I’ve pickled so much over the last 3 years I really just don’t want to take a year in pickle um I’m I’m kind of over it I don’t really like pickles so for me it’s one of those things where I have so many cucumbers and I’m having to pickle so much and I don’t even like them so I’m just going to take the year to not do pickles I might do like a few refrigerator pickles and I’m growing them for fresh eating for sandwiches and like things like that uh but I really just wanted to give myself a year of not doing pickles but yeah this chalice over here is going to be mostly green beans and then lofa and then a few cucumbers and maybe if not I’ll throw something else over there like more cantaloupe or honeydew or something but along this fence and then this is a volunteer sunflower right here this is probably the biggest sunflower I have I’m going to be really curious to see what type of sunflower it is it does look like it’s branching so maybe it is a Goldie uh but along this fence line I planted all sorts of different random sunflowers so we’ll see what pops up honestly like having a bunch of sunflower seeds for the chickens is so great they love it I love having all the seeds on hand to replant um so I’m just going to try to grow as many as I can if they’re like in an area that are in the ground and I’m not going to grow anything there anyway so we’ll see how they do I guess I should also mention the tomatoes that I have on this trellist so I do have a few cherry tomatoes the ones that I’ve had in previous year on the front trellis this is a pink bumblebee variety and then I also went ahead and planted out two San moros as well honestly I should probably prune up these guys a little bit since I do have four on the last little bit of this trellis but I went ahead and put these over here um and devoted other spaces to my other ches cuz I really wanted really pretty full trellises and even though I love like these tomatoes in particular they’re they don’t make the prettiest of trellises so I actually put them on the very far back corner so maybe like everything else will look a lot prettier I have a Zenia over here and then I have some roma tomatoes over here I have another little sunflower over here and guys I’m honestly thinking this is this isn’t lofa so I have no idea what went on with this cuz I could not find any pest on this Leaf in particular but I’m almost wondering if this could be pumpkin so I don’t know if it was last year or the year prior but I had a pumpkin in my compost pile and with moving the compost piles I almost wonder if I stirred up more seeds or something and maybe this is pumpkin because it’s just it’s not I don’t feel like this is loofah it doesn’t feel like loofah that feels like a squash to me it could be the honeynut variety that I’ve grown in the past um it it could very much be that but this is definitely squash I really do not think these are loofah anymore so I always have issues with a bug called Vine boore and that’s typically why I have so many issues with squash the Honey Nut that I’ve grown in the past um is Vine bore resistant uh but if this is the traditional pumpkin that I think it is cuz I had a pumpkin multiple years for the chickens and I’m sure seeds have got stirred up and whatnot um so there’s a good chance that this could be a pumpkin it looks like maybe in a little bit I’ll find out exactly once it sets some fruit what it might look like but I really am pretty sure this is some type of squash so we’re going to keep an an eye on the mystery volunteer plant I originally thought it was lofa cuz it really did look just like my loofa starts but all squash kind of looks the same and gourds for that instance uh but I think volunteer plants are some of my favorites cuz honestly you just never really know I do know like obviously that’s a sunflower but I don’t know what type of sunflower that is and now this is some type of squash and we’ll find out what type of squash it is I am going to try to fight the vine boore if if it is something Vine board we’ll see cuz I would love to have pumpkins but pumpkins are one of those things I’ve almost just completely rode off at this point because of Vine boore also along the shed here I have some jalapenos and then I also have some hiss up in aena over there so here in these few beds I have different roma tomato varieties I have some basil and then it’s also lined with carrots here this goes all all the way down and then I also have some Snap Dragons so the Snap Dragons have been doing really really good ever since I planted them and they look like they’re starting to get some flower stocks and whatnot as well the birds and the bird bath honestly are probably some of my favorite things to watch it’s just so much fun and then all along here I have different peppers so I have cayen I have Sano I also have banana peppers that’s that’s another volunteer sunflower actually and I think that might be a bigger sunflower cuz I had a bigger sunflower there last year um but I also have some bell peppers over here pablano peppers I have a snacking pepper variety and then I have a bunch of peppas this is the Hungarian magar and I ended up just leaving some of the flowers on and I didn’t top anything this year I wanted to really just leave the peppers and we’re starting to get some really pretty Peppers already even though they’ve only been in the ground for about two weeks now over here in the inground space are broccoli is all starting to head up this space over here is proving to be a great little area that one is our biggest one for the broccoli so you can see at the moment the broccoli is like one of the last things to really get sunlight but this area over here gets pretty shaded and it gets a good amount of sunlight and it gets enough for the broccoli um but I don’t think it’s going to get that super super hot heat um that will end up making this broccoli uh bolt before it fully produces heads there’s a few that are just now getting started but for the most part uh the broccoli is doing so so good collors are also doing really well I did have some cabbage worms really go after the collors the kale I’ve been giving mostly to the chickens but really all the brass cuz have been doing pretty pretty good but that’s what the broccoli and everything is looking like and then that’s kind of weedy but this is where the sweet potatoes are going to go which I will get into in a second I have some spinach over here and the spinach has been getting eaten by roly pulley so I did put out a beer trap um it looks like I probably need to redo it cuz we got some rain but this is my bread seed poppies this is the poppies that will produce um the cofy seed for culinary purposes and it’s looking really good and then these are all of my dalas over here and then I have my hibiscus over here that’s the Hibiscus for tea another volunteer little sunflower and then this is all of that other lettuce that I was talking about that’s in my most little shady location we also have more Tomatoes over here and then this is one of my Elderberry plants and it’s really starting to put on some flowers so this is one called black lace and we’ll see how these do I have two different varieties that are supposed to cross-pollinate and give me berries but you can see right here this is what’s happening I’m having the blossoms and I don’t think they’re fully pollinating and here is the other Elderberry this is one called Instant Karma it has this really pretty variegated leaf on it you can see there really isn’t anything to some of the ones that bloomed really early this one bloomed a little bit earlier on and I do still have some lettuce over here as well this is one called flashy trout but we’ll just give this to the girls I’m still obsessed with the hanging baskets that I made for the chicken ceop I think they’re so cute one thing I am really needing to do is get the chickens fence moved um around I haven’t let them out in the last few days and I let them out this morning because if I didn’t they were going to be probably squawking at me the entire time I was trying to film all that this right here is probably my favorite view of the garden currently we had to jump down to my seed starting room so I could show you this I have now officially gotten slips off of my sweet potatoes it honestly wasn’t until I think it was probably like two 2 and 1 half weeks ago now that these sweet potatoes finally rooted and then my slip started to really take off I started to look at sweet potato slips and buying them and most wouldn’t ship until the end of May anyway so I wasn’t giving up hope yet that I could go ahead and make my own sweet potato slips um they take roughly 90 to 120 days to fully grow so even if I get these in the ground at the end of May I have plenty of time so I figured do not give up keep trying as of right now I currently have six here in water and my two sweet potatoes are honestly starting to really go crazy I have two more on the plant that’s already given me a bunch and now my bigger sweet potato is really starting to take off so I believe I’m gonna have plenty of sweet potatoes to actually plant in the ground that’s one reason why the sweet potatoes um haven’t been planted yet cuz I was not giving up hope because sweet potato slips if you’re buying them oh my goodness they are so expensive I think I looked at buying 20 for $45 which was I was like I don’t know if I want to do that so I really did not want to give up hope next year um when I go to do this I will start them so much earlier I think I even started these I want to say the first week of February maybe even into January and there’s all of our little sweet potatoes well guys that is the update for me honestly things have been doing really well and I’m really excited about how they are going honestly we are just gearing up before Peak gardening season harvesting will be really getting going soon I’m only harvesting things every here and there at the moment and now that things are fully planted um we’re kind of just in this little gap before everything really gets going but I’m really excited that I got to show you everything today I hope you enjoyed seeing the garden here in the month of May and I will see you guys all in the next one bye

I randomly mention at 12:12 garlic comes out in the next 4-5 weeks. Its actually closer to 3-4 weeks. Ive averaged around the 2nd week of june! Last year was a week earlier! We shall see how this year goes! Thinking it will be close to mid june! But just wanted to correct that! Look for the bottom 1/2 of your leaves to die back and that's a good indicator its time to pull!
Thanks Bre!! You're an amazing gardener, sharer, caretaker! Can you share where the bird bath is from?
Do you use straw for your mulch? When I use straw it throws so many seeds which turn into weeds.
Hopefully your garden made it through the storms we had. Central kansas we had golf ball size hail, destroyed my little garden! Hopefully u had better luck your way
Please, try sour (fermented) cucumbers. It's a totally different taste, doesn't require sealing jars(cooking them) and they are rich in probiotics and vitamin c.
Do you ever have slug issues when you start planting? All my direct sown crops got destroyed this year. I removed the straw mulch for now and am only planting out my established starts until the slugs calm down. I have excellent beneficial insects but so many teeny slugs
I have a great app that identifies plants.. it's definitely a winter squash! So exciting
I enjoy your videos. You are very detailed and informative. I planned a couple garlic cloves last fall and anxious to pull those in due time. By the way they're growing in my compost pile.
You’re doing a great job! 🎉
👌👌👍
Superbe 👍
À bientôt
Love your garden! Your garlic crops are incredible!
This was my first year growing my own sweet potato slips as well and it took about 6 weeks for me to start harvesting them to place in water for root development. Last year I purchased slips but I am so happy to have had success. It’s much easier then I thought. Plus it was hard to find my desired organic variety in slips so buying the actual potato from the grocery store and starting my own is definitely most cost efficient!
Wow you have and amazing garden 🪴 😮wish I was a bug person so that I could have my own garden 🪴
Have you ever try keeping 2-3 garlic and onion plants and harvest the seeds?
Greetings from Ireland, Beautiful garden and veg beds, They are the bees knees.
Nice garden! Pickled scapes are also delish!
How did you save garlic for seed?
New to the channel. Love 💗💗💗💗 the content. For the pollination issues, have you thought of introducing pollinators like a beehive or butterfly sanctuary to your garden?
Also how many chickens do you have? And how do I learn what growing zone I'm in?
Girl we have been hitting over 100 off and on for the last month! 🥵🥵 it is absolutely ridiculous, it has been so much hotter this year…
Anyone else spot the squirrel in the background? Hint behind the fence
Garlic scape pesto is my favorite! You might like to try it
Can you do a video about picking onion varieties for your latitude? You mentioned it but I’d love a video stepping us through the process.
Healthy plants. You have a good knowledge about gardening
