Rocky Steinbrink of Steinbrink Landscaping and Greenhouses and Todd Faller of Faller Landscapes discuss garden trends for 2024 and planting advice for the warm summer months

[Music] as far as on the landscape side of things we’re seeing a lot of interest in like hydrangeas there’s so many new varieties that come out each year those are real real popular from that standpoint um there’s a lot of other uh plants that do quite well um but it seems like they read a couple magazines and they come in asking for those plants the annuals continue to be very strong um perennials things that come back every year on on normal Winters and normal Summers perennials seem to be very strong Edibles the the vegetables the gardening items um small fruits fruit trees have been very strong for us the last three or four years uh we do a lot of the the apples the pears some of the peaches cherries plums so anything that people can do in their own yards to produce their own food their own fruit to Garden know what’s being sprayed on what isn’t being sprayed on uh that seems to be what we’re seeing the the most Trend in uh it seems like a lot of people are starting to maybe put some things in so they can Harvest their own crops and own food um get away from maybe spending so much money at the store um those are really really po popular uh the vegetable side of things as well the tomatoes the peppers the you know people are just buying them right and left and trying to grow their own and it’s fun to help them and you know and those have been the big trends Mother Nature’s dealt us a lot of fun things type situation for this spring but the big thing that I see happening a lot is people are just educated they’re coming in they’re learning about things before they get to our location and then they’re asking those questions and then it’s fun for us to help them um but our customers are really becoming more and more educated on what they’re looking for and the areas that they’re trying to uh you know make their yourself look pretty in their landscape as far as weather goes the what a difference a year makes last year we were at 4 in of rain at this point this year we’re at about 13 or 14 so um much more of a normal year last year we really pushed the watering on new planted Landscapes and wind breaks uh this year we do the same but we don’t want to overwater things especially our windbreaks you can overwater Evergreens probably easier than you can underwater them so this year we’re just saying Common Sense watering uh mulch well if it’s wet underneath uh probably don’t have to water it we have a lot of customers that are running Sprinklers and watering both and that isn’t necessarily what we want to do so uh check the plant first check the ground first and then kind of make a decision from there well there’s good and bad with all the rains that we’ve had a lot of plants are getting overwatered because of the rains and the drainage and that we’re telling them to just hold back on the water and if you gets lots of rains but then keep an eye on it every day plants need a little help every so often and if you give them too much moisture they suffer if they don’t get enough especially now at summertime the warm temperature so our advice to them is you know watch learn see what your plant listen to your plant uh if it starts to wilt it’s going to tell you that it needs moisture so our big thing is is pay attention to your plants and walk your garden walk your landscape every day
