[Music] thought it was going to be all crazy today cuz he’s drinking coffee and I already had did you not caffeine but well I had caffeine you’re going to be like this yeah and I was up at 3:00 a.m. oh my gosh why I’m just living the dream over here okay hi everyone Janie here welcome back to Robbie’s Garden I am here visiting him today and I’m going to do a garden tour which should be out probably next next week um and then I forced him to film a coffee chat with me cuz why not it’ be so fun it be so fun be so fun so every Saturday I film a coffee chat video where it’s kind of just an update video of what’s been going on how things are going answering some questions I am so distracted because Robbie has hummingbird feeders and there’s literally 1 2 3 four 5 six seven eight of them right there it’s insane I’ll put a clip later but I I’m I’m completely distracted so if you see something flying across the camera it’s it’s the it’s so cool it’s crazy it’s just beautiful I have two you have two hummingbirds yeah and that’s it and Robbie made us breakfast look at that it’s so nice little I love it you get a lot done when you wake up at 3:00 a.m. so my goodness okay so the first order of business is I wanted to talk about the Turlock event at The Greenery last weekend uh we held a proven winners Turlock event where we talked about summer in the garden keeping your plants happy um in the Heat and what plants are good for the Heat and I wanted to say a huge thank you to all of you that came it was so nice meeting you I had the best time a huge thank you to Jay at The Greenery it’s just the most you went right did you go yet no I need to go still oh my God you would die I know it’s so far away that one’s like three hours away from me though that’s true so that one’s not close Okay how hot was it while you were up there it wasn’t it was like 85 it was beautiful it was the most beautiful beautiful day there were so many plants beautiful plants there so many people came it like it was just it was really really fun we had a great time so just wanted to say a huge thank you to all of you who came and you know and again another thank you to Jay as well so then the other thing I wanted to talk about I didn’t even tell you I was going to talk about this uh your garden tours this past week at lesie Bennett oh my goodness so they were so amazing they’re incredible I’ve talked about this book before before I even knew that you knew her so it’s called Garden Wonderland is that right it’s a beautiful beautiful book one of you actually sent it to me because you’re friends with the co-author um anyway it was a beautiful book and then Robbie somehow networked and got to know her well I met Leslie at the camp of Monrovia thing that I went to so she was down there yeah she was there she went to she was there yeah fun yeah and then so the co-author is Julia mhm and so um that’s who my viewer knows is Julia yeah um I mean like they’re both so sweet did you meet Julia I haven’t met Julia but i’ like we follow each other on Instagram and like we’ve chatted or whatever and so hook me up like what the heck right come on but it was an amazing Garden we got to go see her personal Garden um and then we got to go tour two of her Gardens and one of the gardens that we went to that we went to go tour um it was The Cottage Garden and it was massive The Cottage Garden was like an acre but the entire property was like 5 acres oh my gosh it was amazing it’s just crazy and even lesli’s Garden I Love Her Style I like that is kind of my dream style like like that’s the she has the decomposed Granite like I have that’s exactly it yeah and the metal edging that you have the Met edging that I have and like the way that she like combines things um what was she saying she likes putting salt ID plants next to like AER plants you guys it was and all of her vegetable beds was flowers too I don’t know who knows that I’m trying I’m trying really hard like dalas and poppies so funny she really cute so I will link that video down below I just think it’s worth a watch you know it was amazing yeah I I think it was a really really great video and I hope I really hope to meet her soon so next time we go toward some gardens I mean she’s designed a ton of gardens we have to go see three out of all of the gardens that she’s designed which was so crazy she’s done it she’s great okay so now I wanted to answer some questions that were in the comment section the first one was actually from the video where you were at my house and I did the back Garden Tour thank you for filming that by the way uh I can’t believe that you left Monty going to the bathroom in there I I buzzed out bu all out I was like she’s going to cut it no way and then somebody was like I love seeing Robbie’s videographer skills and what goes through is mine and I was like oh my it was so funny you know when you’re editing so so Robbie and I edit our own videos and when you’re editing you’re like sometimes I edit late at night and I’m like kind of delirious and then I start cracking up at a video at of at a and you have to leave it if you laugh that hard if I laugh then it should be in the video right and I was cracking up and so I was like okay I’m going to leave this that’s the benefit of of editing your own videos is you can leave the little things like that and it’s just like no one else would leave Monty nobody else would leave that if I was editing your video I would have taken it out you would have taken it out but it but if it was my video I would have left it and and you laughed at it when you watched it oh my gosh I laughed so hard so anyway okay so the question that I have from that video I just I just lost it hold on hold on doing with okay farm girl Friday asks I don’t know how I never put this together before but Robbie said something here about Mr Dawn and it was a light bulb moment did you really name your dog after Monty Dawn because that is a fabulous level of Garden nerdiness Farm go Friday yes I am a solid Garden nerd and I named uh I named my dog after Monty Don so his name is Monty Don Santos Mr da yeah and then to take it to another level the other thing I’m obsessed with is AA Garden from Barefoot Contessa yep and so my cat is Jeffrey Garden which is AA Garden’s husband so she’s crazy we name our um Jason and I name our pets after after things we love watching on TV what is fair right so our last dog and our last cat were Dwight shroo and Stanley Hudson from the office again if it makes you laugh then that’s you have to do it you have to do it so yes his name is Monty Don named after the great Monty Don did you see that Ina Garden is going on tour I tried to buy us tickets and it sold out I was going to surprise you I’ve seen her on tour already of course you have she going to be in the Bay Area and I cried I’m not surprised I tried to buy his tickets a that would have been so fun thank you that’s very that was very sweet yeah I saw her a while ago and it was I was so excited to see her I cried I’m one of those crazy people that are like I love you so much totally fan girl all right next one um I was showing you guys the Gopher issue oh my gosh I you know it was kind of like I had seen a couple mounds and I was like oh Monty was digging being hopeful Monty was digging Monty and so finally it was like okay the Gophers are I have a gopher at least one I don’t know but they’ve been eating my Cardon they ate my artichoke which is so so very sad um and so we’ve set traps they haven’t gone for the traps yet I know I think we’re going to call professionals to come in so um Dorothy Dunn says and actually I had a couple people ask this will you relocate the Gophers um and so what they’re what she’s talking about is will you trap the Gophers and go let them go somewhere else it’s do you know that’s illegal no it’s illegal it’s like super illegal here in California yeah because there’s so much Farmland that if people are trapping and going and releasing and then going and releas it on the Farmland it’s like detrimental for farms and do you know how far that they will spread like the Gophers and moles no they will go for like half a mile outside so even if like they come and visit your property their main location could be like half a mile away yeah I think this gopher’s main location is in the goat field cuz they keep coming from over there so I don’t want to yeah I don’t I don’t want to like poison them or anything because I don’t want them to have any I don’t want the goats to get sick even though the goats are a little grumpy you see myat I haven’t seen it Goat I found out that goats will um like sneeze at you when they’re in when they they sense danger and they sneeze at me all the time and they’re like and poked my head over and the Goat was sneezing at me and then stomping at me I was like you little I didn’t know that yeah yeah so they sneeze at me all the time and I finally looked up like why do goats sneeze thought they don’t like you it’s because they don’t like me yeah that’s all right I’m all right with that so Dorothy no I won’t be relocating the Gophers cuz that’s totally illegal shockingly shockingly I mean it makes sense there’s so much Farmland around yeah yeah and I was talking to Deb down in San Diego area and she has the same issues and you can’t relocate and that’s actually something I learned in Master Gardeners they like taught us that you’re not allowed to relocate so I know that that probably seems like the humane way to do it but do it okay so um waren says I noticed you were showing the tag for the Bloomerang lilac and it showed sun isn’t the spot you planted it in more shady will it do well in a shady spot okay so I wanted to leave this in because um plant tags are for the entire country that means plant tags are for Michigan for Maine for Florida for Texas for California so it’s not um you have to take a plant tag with a grain of salt so a lot of things like if you go to a garden center I go to the garden centers a lot and I’ll you know the owners like Fula or like Eileen at Van winden’s will say yeah the plant tax has full sun but here we have to do full shade like punies right yeah just to answer that question because I planted that lilac in dappled shade no it’s not what the plant tag says but I never do what the plant tag exactly what the plant tag says I will push it a little bit either way um just because just like zones I don’t really trust the zones if you look in my garden I have so many plants well you’re which tall blue junifer the seven right seven zone seven and we’re at zone 9 and they do fine here and they do beautifully here and there’s so many other plants that are like Zone eights or whatever and they do absolutely fine I have a lilac my next door neighbors is blooming look back this way so see the purple blooms oh pretty but it gets so much shade from all of the other plants that are surrounding it that just the blooms peek out a and so it’s in shade yeah so it’s fine and it’s fine yeah so I’m not saying that it’s going to be perfect that Bloomerang lilac I don’t I don’t know basically I don’t know but I didn’t have any other good place to put it and I wanted to put it there so I’m going to try it they also say lilacs don’t grow here but they do grow here they do grow here yeah but you have to find the right spot in your garden for them so this spot is like super dappled um like there’s spots of sun I think it’s going to be perfect actually you know cuz it’s not deep shade and the tree that it’s under is deciduous so it’s going to get a lot of sun early in the spring yeah which is well and you planted it not closest to the chicken coop it’s on the other side where you’re going to do your walkway right yeah yeah so that gets more Sun than oh that’s the other lilac I had a reblooming lilac on the other side two now yeah wow vanula gave me one wow yeah she she just gave it to me that’s exciting I really like her me too um anyway so you’ll see that I never follow its on plant tags I would say the best advice is go to a local Garden Center and ask the local Garden Center what their recommendations are because they’re going to have better recommendations for your area versus versus my area yeah so everybody’s different and take gardening with a grain of salt because well just like I would trust I mean like so California is so big but I would only trust somebody like in surrounding areas versus if I trusted somebody like I mean honestly like even in like the Davis area because that’s already a totally different climate yeah and even like your front yard versus your backyard is different so you just have to kind of play with it so that boomering lilac I’m playing with um all right Fe 2896 says hi Janie I was hoping you could answer my question about your irrigation time and how often your plants how often for your plants in full sun I know it’s not an exact science but I would really appreciate knowing how long and how often you run your irrigation for plants in full sun um you have an answer for this how how long do you do yours mine goes off 15 minutes in the morning and 15 minutes at night that’s good mine goes off off 20 to 30 minutes depending on the Zone in the morning so same yeah I just give a little bit in the morning and then like at the very end of the day they’re thirsty again so I do 15 and 15 I’m just I just I’m not as nice as you I I don’t want to program that that’s true that’s true um but I have everything on irrigation including all my containers and so like what was that not my rooster that’s not my rooster that what is is he is something WR with him yes like what is wrong with him he has one eye are you serious cuz I’ve heard the rooster but that wasn’t that rooster that was that rooster oh my God I wonder if microphone picked that up probably I eded out so many of its gross I’m I’m blind to it now that was like an elephant it’s psychotic cuz I’ve heard another there’s another rooster that doesn’t sound like that no that’s that rooster just if there’s only one rooster just got that’s a normal yeah that’s a normal it just had a moment okay it was like pooping or something I don’t know what it was doing okay what irrigation irrigation I do 15 minutes in the morning 15 minutes a night yeah and if you see things are struggling MH I I just turn the timer on for more or add another emitter so like all my containers they have like the boxwoods that I have surrounding our patio those have four half gallon per hour emitters oh yeah so that means that in 15 minutes it’s going to get a qu of a gallon cuz cuz I have four half gallons which equals two gallons 15 minutes gives it down to a half gallon math math yeah so they get half gallon of water in the morning half gallon of water at night if I saw that they were struggling I would just add another emitter and that’s kind of what you have to do is you figure out how long do you want your your irrigation to go do you want it to go for half hour hour in the morning do you want it to go 15 minutes at night 15 minutes in the morning do you need it to only go for 15 minutes throughout the entire day because some places are really lucky and that’s all they need that’s all they need some people don’t even need irrigation people don’t even need irrigation that doesn’t compute in mind I could not even imagine doing that just crazy so you figure out how much time you need and then what goes into play is the emitters that’s the biggest thing is how many emitters per plant like the ARB I have a wall of aritas and my arbas have the half gallon per hour um spetti tubing that you use also each of those have four around it and then they also have two uh 2 gallon per hour emits wow they are So Thirsty really they are so thirsty I had just the the four around them and they were struggling I added the extra drip and now they’re okay that’s a lot of water it’s a lot of water holy they’re very thirsty so one of the things you look for is what it’s called runoff and so if you start seeing your pots have a ton of water coming out the bottom a little bit is totally normal but a ton like the plants in front of my office right now I way overdid it with emitters and they’re they’re getting too much water and there’s way too much runoff coming out of the pot the nutrients leaves also exactly and so they’re getting chlorosis and everything like that so I know I need to go back in and I need to adjust all of those emitters so if you see a lot of runoff or if you see a plant in your garden and the there’s it like there’s just water kind of pulled all over it it’s just too much it’s too much for the plant so then you want to back down either cut off that emitter and put a different emitter or back down your whole zone so basically long story short it’s not how long it goes it’s how many emitters you have sometimes yeah I mean you figure out okay we’re going to go for half hour throughout the entire day yeah now I need less or more emitters yeah yeah you just want kind of want to play with it and it changes throughout the season too so like so yeah very early in the spring ours only goes for 15 minutes in the morning and that’s it yeah but then dead summer it’s 15 minutes morning 15 minutes a night yeah you probably get that question a too I get it all the time yeah and it’s just it’s very complicated and until you start doing it and you kill a couple plants M kill your plants that’s and then you’ll figure it out that’s the secret okay speaking of killing your plants uh I had so many plants in my waiting area waiting to be planted and I ended up killing some of them you killed some I just saw your real you killed a you you’re real I haven’t killed a single one here oh my God you you kept showing them he rob had a real and he was like I killed this I and it was if you’re not following me on Instagram I’m hilarious on Instagram he is really funny like I can’t even I can’t even give him a hard time for saying that cuz you are really funny on Instagram um so anyway I spent two whole days like long days planting all the plants I’ve got almost all the plants planted in my garden I’m super super happy about it and that was because I was having trouble keeping the plants alive that were in the cans in response to that Kathy oh my God had the best idea I’ve heard all year she got 143 likes on this comment and like nine replies I know so Kathy in response to the plants that are waiting to be planted her her input or idea was I bought a $10 waiting pool that I use for plants in Waiting then I can add water to the pool for them to soak up through the roots works great and not bad to store isn’t she a genius I have plants in Waiting Kathy is a genius that’s so smart is that smart and so I have like these black stock tanks from Rubbermaid that that’s how I’m going to water my plants from now on just pour the hose in there isn’t that and then they all get bottom watered also I know which plants way prefer Cathy good job this is why I love the comment section on all of these videos I know I was just like I I think I woke up in the morning and read that and was like oh my God but you’re like duh duh okay so thank you Kathy that was Kathy that was a fabulous fabulous thing um so today well you all probably saw I did a video we’re we’re going to film it in a little bit we’re going we’re going to the plant store yeah and uh and then probably next week I’m going to do a garden tour of Robbie’s Garden that’s looking really good and it’s like a completely different Garden since last time I was here well it’s been like almost a year and a half since you’ve been up here you’ve like changed everything yeah so are your plan your plans for this Garden are to like completely revamp it completely completely revamp it you just don’t take a break you just don’t rest it’s fine it’s fine I love it I I bet you Brent loves it too he loves he loves that I’m like okay it’s 11 o’clock we can now wind down yeah no all right so stay tuned for those videos um I will link Robbie’s videos with lesie Bennett in the description down below cuz they’re really really good really yeah they’re I mean there’s a lot of inspiration from these Gardens and we went to two that she designed plus hers that she also designed should we tell we should tell everyone about cultivate we should tell everyone about cultivate so Robby and I are going to cultivate together this year y we’re very excited we already have our flights y um we’re making plans all that fun stuff I have a couple garden tours already planned we have a garden center that we’re going to that apparently is supposed to be amazing so if it’s going to be a lot of fun it’s going to be so much fun there’s going to be so many people there I know no so many people just get right last year it was like the amount of business cards that I got from like I had to like at the at the end I remember going through and being like who is this person there was so many but it was so fun to meet everybody that was your first year was last year yeah yes then this will be my first year it’s really fun I’m so excited so if you live in Ohio Columbus Ohio stop by cultivate we’ll be there I’m going to be at the proven winers booth for a little bit um I’m going to be Meandering around I’ll be at the booths strap one The Proven Winners one the roia one the Epic gardening one I’ll be everywhere there’s no epic gardening Booth yes there is are you going serious he has a booth he’s going this year he rented two spaces he did yeah I’m going to be there oh my God I’m so excited yeah yeah that’s amazing all right so anyway we are planning to go to cultivate it is going to be great I’m super excited if you’re want to go free buy tickets because they are cheaper than at the door Proven Winners is paying for my ticket well I bought my ticket so we hope to see you all there all right everyone I hope you enjoyed this and I hope you all have a chance to get in your garden today bye guys [Music]

You two are my favorite gardeners on YouTube ❤ Thanks for brightening my day!
I use the boot trays from Gardners Supply for plants in waiting. I works great. They are small enough that you can pick them up and move them with the plants sitting in them (most of the time). Having more that one tray, I can put like plants together and place one in the shade or in the sun based on the plant needs. Also, when not in use they nest well in each other AND you can also use them for your seedlings in the early spring. AND let's not forget, they can also be used as a boot tray or garden shoe tray.
If it’s off season and you can’t get a little plastic pool for plants in waiting- go to a feed store and gets pan fir a rabbit cage and I think they Hana goat pan too. They are big enough for a lot of plants and plastic Perfect for this.
I hear you on the plant tags. Only thing I take into consideration on those tags is the end of the range of the zones.BUT, if it says zones 3 to 7, I will sometimes try it anyway here in my 8a garden. It's all about experimentation and creating microclimates in your garden. You never know unless you try!
Janey I’m happy you addressed plant tags as it’s so true! I chuckle when I’m at a big box garden center and see full sun tags on just about every flowering plant. I live in Redding and would have fried flowers if placed in hours of full sun! Robbie I agree with 2x a day watering for most plants when the temp is consistently above 95 degrees. As always it’s so fun when you two get together! 😎
Your friendship is so great. I always enjoy when you get together.
I loved your comment: if it makes you laugh, you have to do it! Perfect as are the two of you!
I love you and Robbie together anytime! So fun. You guys should do a weekly or monthly Q/A together on the regular.
Kathy is amazing! I have 25 plants soaking up water in my new wading pool. I added a little PW water soluble food in the water! Thank you Cathy!
Collab videos are my favorite!
Omg I thought I was the only one who killed their plants in their staging area. I am not alone. Result of buying too many many many plants! And then i buy more after throwing away the dead ones away…
I had gophers a couple times and put the dog mess down the holes and they went away. I've heard that they don't like daffodils too.
The movie Libertine has a scene in it where a character is talking to the King and in the background a dog is doing a duty on a beautiful marble floor. Hilarious but $#it happens.
People “relocate” raccoons and other varmints to our farm and they kill our chickens and ducks so please, please, please do not do this.
You and Robbie together is like magic. You two energize me and get me so excited about my gardening journey.
OK Cathy with her "plants in waiting" in the kids wading pool…..just be careful because here's what I stupidly did this spring. I've always loved hydrangeas, have never had any, so bought three gorgeous ones at Mother's Day for $25 each, decided to set them into bigger blue pots which looked beautiful with their beautiful blooms, and then added water to the outer pots and basically killed them over the next two weeks by overwatering, and I only put the water into the bottom of the outer pots. So no direct watering into the soil, and these were garden hydrangeas, not just pretty potted ones for mother's day. True plants. $75 gone, three dead plants. I'm so mad at myself because nothing has helped to try to revive them…..googled it (too late obviously) to discover they "don't like wet feet"….so much for watering from the bottom. I guess the moral of the story is to research the plant more before watering it, but who knew? not me!
I do a lot of winter sowing and use Kathy's wading pool idea to water my milk jug seedling containers during a dry spell. So much easier than trying to water through the small opening in the top of the jugs. This is also a great idea for your patio plants for when you go on vacation. Makes it easier for whoever is babysitting your plants. That rooster always cracks me up!
Fun video! ❤️M
❤you too when y’all get to gather watch both of y’all from tx
I love you guys together. You should team and do more videos. 😊
Okay, that does it! Robbie must join the coffee chat every Saturday, LOL! This was such a fun video! I wish I could take the credit for the "Kathy" comment, but alas, I am a different "Kathy." Her idea about the kiddie pool really is genius, although I must admit that I was doing the same thing on a smaller scale with my tomato seedlings (all 36 of them), but using a plastic dishpan. Works really well! 😄💐
We need to get Janie up to 100,000 subscribers. So hit the subscribe and like button! Here views are increasing but her subscribers are moving up slowly
Love you guys!!!!
Janey you and Robbie ard hilarious together Omg I was gardening until 9 pm and was just watching you guys !
I was laughing so hard😃
We dig up the gopher hole and put our dogs poop in the hole and fill it back up. They hate it and leave! 😂😂😂😂
As Jenny says "Be a Student of your own Garden"!!!! 🥰🥰🥰
Every weekend we used to go to grandpas house on the farm and go gopher hunting… people are so soft these days! Take the gophers out! It's like being sad over an ant being taken out.. I don't understand peoples selective caring.
Thank you guys so much for explaining your watering! I live in your areas, closer to Robbie and have been struggling! Have killed a few plants probably overwatering, but now my ones who were doing so great are not doing so great but the drainage there isnt the best or the soil, so have been lost on what to do. Just love you two together!
This was so fun to watch!!
"LIKE" soon as I saw Robbie
I seriously need to learn about irrigation because I just lay the hose down & come back every now & again to move it 😭🤣
Sooo, this coming year is my 30th wedding anniversary. A visit to cultivate would be a great anniversary gift. Hummm, now how to get my husband on board??????
Looking forward to meeting you in person! ❤
You two are the Tara and Johnny of the Garden Olympics! Thanks to you both for inspiration and 😂!
Bonus! Such a fun coffee chat
OMG, I love seeing you guys together. I wish I had a garden Bestie. The only friend I had that loved plants like me passed away from Covid. Enjoy yourselves at Cultivate. Can't wait for the videos.
I use kitty litter pans from the dollar store. You can buy a case of 25 for 31.25. They each comfortably fit 6 pots I use them when I’m hardening off seedlings they’re perfect for bottom watering and the smaller pots don’t tip over
You two are so much fun together. I can't wait to see you traveling together!
It’s crazy to think that this friendship formed all because your lisianthus died and Robbie had a few to spare! Love it when you guys are together!
You are both so fun to listen to. You made my morning commute so much more pleasant and Miami traffic is so not a fun experience. ☺️
❤
First time watching ya'll together and I loved it! Have to see more of this.
