  1. Some of the best figs I’ve ever seen in colder areas like us in Virginia and Maryland were up against a brick fireplace. He gave them that early warmth that they needed and no warmth once it got hot bricks do reflect heat.

  3. I plant my mini peppers in a half barrel, but I keep it up against the wall of the house so it doesn’t get too much rain. I’d rather water it than have them drown. I wish I had muscadine my cousin in North Carolina had them and I just love them but I’m way over here in the Virginia front Royal where the skyline Drive begins and we are getting some high 90s up to 90 day and I think Muska would be happy and maybe some collards I love some collards.

  4. Omg I love your garden!!! Please tell me how long it took for you to have such a beautiful garden. I'm really enjoying how you experiment in your garden. This is where I am now. Taking notes how you plant in your cells systematically and how you plan for the seasons. I'm learning. Thanks.

  5. When you sprayed your cucumbers, what did you spray them with? My cucumbers have a big cucumber beetle infestation. I sprayed them yesterday with Captain Jack's Insecticidal Super Soap. Fingers crossed.

  6. We have so much Bassil we dont know where to put it anymore. We had one plant, let it grow to about 1 foot, cut it in half and planted the cutting. Kept doing this every two to three weeks. Now its too much hahaha

  7. Gary, I have tomato horn worms here in Alabama. I found 7 this year so far. They really decimated 2 or 3 of my jalapeños. I didn't know they are peppers. 😢 Do I need to cut back the skeletonized peppers? (there are a few leaves toward the bottom).

  8. Made a stir fry today with green beans, onions, leeks, and purslane, from my garden. I love having fresh vegetables that I’ve grown, even if it’s a lot of work!

  9. Hey Gary. Garden looking great as always. I'm year 4 with my current garden, but I'm still having trouble with growing peppers and eggplants in my raised beds. They do great in my grow bags. Peppers i planted at the same time in beds and grow bags look like night and day. I have no idea what to do.

  10. Maybe beneficial nematodes for the maggots that attacked the onions. I also highly recommend the Quickstar variety of Kohlrabi, which matures quickly. It has worked very well for me in Zone 6, Ohio.

  11. So inspiring, Gary. Thank you for the tour. Question –what dust do you recommend for the butternut squash?

  12. My tomato plants are wilting and appear to die. We’re in south West Michigan with extreme heat but we water regularly. They are next to green beans and potatoes and wonder if that is a mistake They are quite crowded and maybe need to trim bottom leaves

  13. Hi Gary, I went to Jamaica for ten days and returned last Friday to find my garden looking like it had an heatstroke ask someone to water for me, but I think I would have done a better job inspite of the heat, however they started bouncing back. Had to give them a lot of TLC and shade cloth😢

  14. The thermometer on my porch, in the shade, was 102F this afternoon. I don't even want to think how hot it was in full sun. Zero rain this month, and extreeme heat has everything dried out. It is the first time I've seen the grass die off since living in Sylacauga AL. To keep the garden going, I have had to switch to daily watering. The exceptions are my fruit trees which get watered every four days with the newest trees, two peach and a crabapple, watered every other day, and the GreenStalks and raised bed tomatoes watered every other day. No signs of fungi, and pest pressure is sunder control. I am harvesting something nearly every day, peppers, pole beans (red noodle beans this year), lemon squash, zucchini, cucumbers, and tomatoes. The Sugar Baby Watermelon aren't producing as much as I had hoped for, but the cantaloupe are doing great, with more female flowers for future fruit. I think the watermelon need more sunlight. I may try growing them in a different location next year, and double the amount 0f cantaloupe. The chicken run was delivered this afternoon. I'll inventory thre parts tomorrow, and assemble it Thursday and Friday. The chick's wings are fully feathered, and their tail feathers hacve grown in. They are making a mess, learning to fly, dust bath, and scratching the pine shaving bedding. I have to clean the waterer multiple times a day. One more week, and they go in the chicken coop. It is fully assembled, and the perimeter of its run is lined with concrete pavers.

  15. Have you had any problems with vine borers on butternuts? My understanding is they don’t really bother them because they are a different species from summer squashes.
