Found this tall gal in front of someone’s house for free. I think it’s supposed to have spines but the areas where they would be are crumbly and black/brown. Otherwise it seems ok. It seems to have been dug out of the ground, there are a lot of these in our area.

I took one of the small arms off to propagate and because it was in the way when I was potting it, but it has the same black crumbly spots where spines are supposed to be too.

Is this a spineless variety of Euphorbia where the black crumbly areas are normal, or is it a sign of disease?

    These are expensive (what a find) and it looks healthy to me

    That’s one tall Euphorbia ingens! Yes it’s spineless, yes it’s normal for the areoles to have that appearance. Could be wrong, but I believe they can ingest moisture through them and may pup when one is damaged.
