Got this guy about a year ago I think? It didn’t seem like it was in a good spot at the nursery, dark and cool. I also admittedly neglected it over the winter and didn’t touch it at all. It has been under lights and in a bright window the whole time, but didn’t do anything.
I’ve been giving it water around once a week now (or when I remember) and it’s started growing decently. The soil is completely dry after just a couple days though, should I water it more? I don’t want to overwater, but it is very dry. The windowsill gets pretty hot too.
Also, should I do anything about the narrower part in the center near the top, or should it be fine? It was like that when I got it, now the new growth is a bit wider. I don’t want it to get unstable. Posted it on the cactus sub last year and they said it would widen, but it never did.

Just to add, the soil isn’t the best, it was very loose in the pot when I first got it. All I had was generic cactus mix at home. I did mix it with some rocks n stuff. I have a slightly bigger pot around somewhere and I’m going to try and get my hands on some better stuff to mix once I can.
They like bright light, well drained soil, and warm temperatures. Rocks are not good additions to potting soil, except as ballast, but sand would be a better way to add weight. However, neither sand nor rocks do much to improve drainage and do nothing for aeration. Pumice or perlite would be better additions for improving drainage beyond a typical cactus/succulent mix. The narrow stem sections are normal.
What is it ?
