welcome back to the teenage Gardener YouTube channel hello everybody and welcome back to another video today is January 14th 2024 and as you can tell I’m not actually in my garden right now but instead I’m inside my bedroom because right now we’re receiving 35 mph wind gusts according to our weather station and yesterday we even had stronger wind gusts at 40 mph and because of those really strong winds yesterday this ended up happening in the garden yeah the greenhouse flew off of the garden and landed on top of my fence during the really strong winds and so as soon as I saw that happen outside I rushed downstairs rushed into my backyard and I was able to maneuver the greenhouse covers off of my fence I dragged them into my backyard and surveyed the damage and you know unfortunately uh they’re pretty damaged you know the uh connectors are damaged and snapped in multiple places the covers are punctured in multiple places as well so unfortunately I’m going to have to replace those so yeah that kind of sucks but apart from that in today’s video I’d like to talk about house plants you know I just love house plants especially during this time of the year during the winter you know I live in zone 6B and our Winters can get fairly cold and obviously nothing really grows outside during the winter so it’s just wonderful to have some life inside your house and you know be able to take care of so many different house plants I have house plants all over my bedroom I have some on my bookshelf my desk my dresser my other dresser I have them in my closet I have plants everywhere and you know in today’s video I’d like to repot a couple of house plants I have three house plants that need to be repotted because their pots are starting to get a little bit too small and I’d also like to give some house plant care tips for the winter including watering fertilizing light all of those different things so by the end of the video you’ll be fully educated on how to take care of your house plants during the winter so I’m going to go ahead and get started on showing you one all the different house plants that need to be repotted I only have three but yeah uh I’ll show you guys those house plants and then we’re going to start repotting them so I’ll see you guys in just a moment all right so here are the three house plants that I’m going to be repotting today and right now I have them inside of my repotting mat this is actually one of the Christmas presents that I got from my parents it’s a a mat that you can use to repot your plants and they have these little sides that you can snap together and it makes it kind of like a bowl so it can contain Soil and Water and whatnot super cool but anyways here are the three house plants that I have here and the first one here with these bright greenish yellow leaves this is called a lemon lime filad dendrin I mean look at the color on these this is just gorgeous and so one of the cool things about philadelph dendrons is that uh they can actually take lower light you know I have two small windows in my bedroom a Northwest facing window and a north east facing window and so my bedroom doesn’t receive a lot of light but these filad dendrons can tolerate that and I actually have another filad dendron here called Prince of orange and this one has bright orange leaves uh that are actually even brighter orange when you put them in more sunlight right now they’re not very orange but you know it’s still really pretty and I love the texture of the leaves are very shiny very smooth and they look very nice and then in the middle here we have a feeling flirty trais scansa and this is a really cool looking plant you know you have these little leaves that are stre with green and cream and purple and they just look so cool and these Vines here these will actually start to Trail outside the pot and start to vine and that’s just super cool it’s a beautiful house plant uh right now it’s mounding right now by mounding I mean like the shape of the plant the growth habit you know they start off mounding and then they start to grow more prostrate and start to grow more Vines but yeah these are the three house plants that I’m going to be repotting today and these are the three pots that I’m going to be using to repot them into I have two of these white geometric pattern pots that I got from I believe Home Depot I got these last year and uh I’m going to be using those two and I have this kind of like beige colored geometric pot as well that I’ll be using and it has a couple drainage holes on the bottom all of these actually have drainage holes except these two white ones have only one hole so yeah uh let’s go ahead and get started uh the first plant that I’m going to be potting up is the lemon lime fendron so I’m going to move these two off to the side all right and I’m going to be putting the lemon lime filad dendrin in this white pot so I’m actually going to put these two pots off the side as well and I’m going to move my soil mix in here this is my soil mix it’s Vigoro uh allpurpose potting mix I use it for my indoor plants and I mixed in some extra perlite so if you look inside you’ll see a bit more perlite inside the soil and that helps increase the drainage because you know you don’t want your plant to retain too much water indoors especially if they’re not receiving a lot of light because then it could cause root rot so yeah uh have a nice free draining soil mix so I’m going to start filling up the pot with said soil [Music] mix all right so I just filled up the pot with fresh soil and now I’m going to take the filad dendrin outside of its Cash Pot it’s actually inside of like a plastic nurs container but the pot that it’s inside of right now this is called a cash pot it’s just like a cover pot that you can put over a nursery container to make it look nicer so I’m going to put that off to the side with the other two plants and you can see it has a pretty good root system if you look down has a nice root system so let’s go ahead and take it out of its pot all right so finally out and you can see the root system is very healthy we have some nice looking Roots here but it’s not NE necessarily root bound uh even though it’s not really root bound and like not wrapping around the pot too much I’m going to tease the roots a little bit just kind of get them like that okay and I’m going to place the new plant in the very center okay very good now we can start back filling so let me grab some soil Mo this over here I’m going to start back filling some [Music] [Music] soil all right and our first plant is fully potted up this is the lemon lime filad dendrin also I forgot to mention all of these plants the three that I have here these are all Proven Winners Leaf Joy plants uh I really like the leaf Joy Collection from Proven Winners because I’ve had really good luck in the past with Proven Winners plants they always do very well for me and yeah I highly recommend The Proven Winners Leaf Joy Collection all right now we’re going to make space for our second plant which is the feeling flirty trus scansa and here is our feeling flirty Tris scansa again very color F very nice looking very [Music] [Music] healthy okay and now it’s time for our last plant which is the prince of orange filad dendrin so we have it right [Music] here [Music] all right so that is our last plant that was our Prince of orange vad dendrin I have the three plants up here going to put them on display so you guys can see them one more time all right so I just finished potting up these three house plants we have the prince of orange fendron here with the kind of orangish leaves that are very shiny and smooth then we have the lemon lime filad dendrin which as this bright yellowish green leaves upright growth habit looks very colorful and vibrant and then we have the feeling flirty Tris scano with these green and cream and purple stre leaves has more of a prostrate growth habit so now that I’m finished potting up these three house plants uh I’d like to go over some house plant care tips for the winter because you know a lot of people buy house plants to keep them company during the winter because you know winter can be a dreary season especially if you live in a cold climate like I do I live in a Zone 6B which you know isn’t that cold compared to you know a Zone 4 or a Zone 3 but uh it still can get pretty dreary during the winter you know there’s fewer sunlight hours plants aren’t growing outside and you know having house plants inside can be one really helpful for your mental health and two just you know gives you something to do during the winter months so yeah I’m going to give you guys some tips and tricks on how to take care of your house plants during the winter so I’m going to go ahead and turn around the camera and we’re going to talk about that all right and now it’s time for three tips on how to take care of your house plants during the winter months and my first tip is to not water your house plants too much or too often during the winter and the reason why is because your house plants are going through a natural dormy cycle during the winter like most outside plants go through and during that dormy cycle your plants are actually using less water than they do during their growth cycle in the spring summer and early fall so if you end up watering them too much during the winter they’re not going to utilize that water as much and it may actually pull at the bottom of your plants containers and cause root rot which can eventually lead to your plants Ultimate Death so it’s good to refrain from Watering your plants too much during the winter and also adjust your watering schedule by watering less often and with less water than usual my second tip for taking care of your house plants during the winter is to refrain from fertilizing your plants during the winter and the reason why is just like watering you know your house plants are going through a natural dormy cycle during the winter and because of that they also aren’t using as many nutrients as they do during their active growing stages and so by using fertilizer during the winter you aren’t really Haring your house plants but you’re not really helping them either because they aren’t going to be using those nutrients so it’s better to refrain from fertilizing your plants during the winter and to wait till spring instead and my third and final tip for taking care of your house plants during the winter is to provide your plants with some supplemental humidity and the reason why you want to give them some extra humidity is because during the winter your heaters are going to kick on and those heaters actually dry out the air and take away a lot of humidity and in my experience having higher humidity in the room prevents the leaves from turning brown from turning crispy and it just leads to an overall health of your plant so by you know using a humidifier or a pebble tray under your plants you can really help increase the humidity and have much healthier house plants during the winter all right well I hope you guys enjoyed this video I really hope it helped you out and I’ll see you guys in the next video sh
