those Tomatoes right there are about 90% water and you don’t think a a a an earth box or a wicking tub with a big tomato plant in it and about 10 juicy big old tomatoes on it is going to suck some water you don’t know how thirsty these things are so I’ve had a lot of questions about my irrigation system in containers now these are some pretty much play out squash those are raised beds but a lot of what I grow is in containers so let me show you real quick how I run this uh irrigation system how it works and uh you know it’s just very easy very easy so first of all it all starts here I have a manual timer on it that is a little orbit timer love those things very cheap you know 1012 something like that all the way through I’ve got two gallon per hour uh uh emitters so uh if I set it on 90 minutes then I get three gallons in each uh container that’s about what the earth box holds about what a wicking tub hose so it seems to work out real well for me so I’ve got it on a very short hose about a 6ft hose right here that comes down here to the pressure to the system with the pressure reducer a filter all that’s in one I get that from hos uh all in one really like it I like the pressure reducer I like the way everything works um so that’s what that does then it runs down here comes out and down here and goes underground to the Garden uh this is how I can mow over it and not worry about cutting something beating up something up it pops up right here just outside the garden comes up and over and down and then my main line runs the entire length of the garden feeding all these uh rows feeding the rows got to tee there a te there a te there te there all the way down feeding these rows then you come in here and punch a hole where your container is with a little bar little quarter inch Barb half the Barb goes in the pipe half the Barb is on this tube here run that tube down in there with the um you see that should be able to with the uh 2 gallon emitter on most of these I have a shut off valve in other words if if this plant dies or you know runs its light course then I can always turn this tub off by using uh the the little shut off app I love these little shut off app and they just uh they water these as you can see they water those uh Earth boxes real well all the way down uh all the way down is the main line on each earth box you have the hose uh coming in it from the mainline the main line is capped off on the ends using a little figure eight clamp clamp little figure eight clamp that basically just pinches it off squeezes it off work great got that on every one of these on the ends of every one of these is that little figure eight and I’m feeding all my Earth boxes so you know it’s not complicated at all you’ve got to have a pressure reducer you’ve got to have a filter especially if you’re on a well um maybe not so much if you’re on Street water but if you’re on a well need that uh filter to keep from stopping up all these little emitters and U so that that comes in handy uh I want you to look I’ve just got tomatoes everywhere uh and then over here same thing another row of Earth boxes got some flowers in some some pollinators I’ve got some weeds in this one as well as um some kale uh excuse me uh Swiss chard the cucumbers have just about placed out but they they doing well charred here more flowers here and then we get to the wicking tubs now wicking tubs same principle you just punch a hole down there drape it over up little longer hose longer quarter inch hose drape it up over the uh the wicking tub spout which is you know probably another 12 in higher than the other ones and uh turn it on and it irrigates sometimes I walk through and I don’t know whether an animal’s done it when is wind has done it whatever and these hoses especially on the wicking tubs uh these hoses would be laying on the ground so you you know something you want to look at uh from time to time just make sure thatth you know they’re all in the hole all in the tubes before you uh before you turn it on and if you see especially if you see a plant starting to you know flag a little bit droop a little bit you know it’s not getting enough water make sure you got that hose in there make sure the emitter is not plugged up that happens all the time I try once twice uh a month to look at my emter make sure they’re not slowing down plugging up uh that that way I know how much um water I’m giving each one so that just a that’s a good practice to do so again it comes in down there runs the entire length the main line runs the entire length stops the last T is right here and then I’ve got the uh the shut off or the Kink right there to stop it and the last uh the last line here is providing water to those wicking tubs it is working absolutely great earthbox sells a watering kit for their Earth boxes but they’re just it’s it’s way too expensive uh I’ve got a bunch of Earth boxes and I don’t know what their kit I mean I don’t know how many Earth boxes their kit will will supply but I’ve got like 21 Earth boxes and and it’s just too easy to do yourself um all this stuff can be found at at your big box store half inch tubing all your te’s uh and really all this uh is is taken is a/ inch tubing and te’s right here where I’ve got it uh that’s an elbow there that’s that green thing is an elbow and I’ve got a shut off valve right there because I knew the squash and zucchini was going to play out before everything else does so now that it’s playing out somewhat I can come in there and I can turn that shut off valve off to this whole raised bed situation if I’m not using it if everything’s playing out which it it kind of is I still got some I still got some zucchini but it is starting to play out but just thought I’d show you the uh the ease of providing water turning I you can use a electric timer that you don’t have to mess with at all I like to just come out here every day and turn it on for 60 minutes or 90 minutes you know just depends on what what I think it needs maybe three times a week I give it 90 minutes and a couple of times a week I give it 60 minutes I just want to make sure that the uh that the uh uh you know that they’ve got plenty of water because these Tomatoes let me tell you something those Tomatoes right there are about 90% water and you don’t think a a an earth box or a wicking tub with a big tomato plant in it and about 10 juicy big old tomatoes on it is going to suck some water you don’t know how thirsty these things are so you got to have water this is just a foolproof way I can walk away now I can’t go on vacation because I don’t have it automatic I have to turn turn the manual timer on every day but if I do go on vacation then I’ve got a couple of electric timers that I can put on it just to make sure that everything gets a drink even while I’m gone may not get picked but it’s going to get a drink so anyway I thought I’d show it to you it’s just too easy to do to keep from coming out here and standing here and watering by hand I mean that’s that’s a pain uh maybe 30 seconds 45 seconds on each tub and uh just a pain especially in the hot summertime in Texas so anyway want to show it to you I’ve had a lot of questions on it and uh after showing you the cages the other day how I make the cages uh that’s the next the next step is uh is the irrigation it’s too is so easy to do so simple to do not that expensive that hose the fittings all that it’s just not expensive at all I’ll put a link to uh 1/ in hose I’ll put a link to um the shut off valves the uh emitters that I like the two uh 2 gallon per hour emitters te’s elbows things like that that you might need uh for the um for your own irrigation system so I really like it I think you’re going to like it uh it it’s just it takes so much of the guesswork out of Watering your containers and watering a raised beds like we saw I didn’t show you but the raised beds over here have have drip line in it these are not on emitters that’s on a drip line and uh so it’s it’s getting oh gosh I don’t remember what the GPH on the drip line is but it’s getting plenty of water drip line Mainline quarin supply hose emitters little quarter inch barbs and that’s about all there is to it I’m serious it’s it’s just it’s too easy not to do too easy not to do so uh get you something going I hope your MERS look as as good as mine do cuz man I am making some Tomatoes now we you know they’re they’re we’re having to give most of them away cuz they’ve got so much going from the storm damage we’re just not able to can or freeze or anything this year so most of those are getting given away but I’m I’m happy to do it I’m glad I I’m glad I’ve got enough planted enough and have enough growth and they didn’t get blown away and all that glad I’ve got enough to give to uh to give to people that want them and will use them so I guess that’s about it uh we’ve talked about drip line you ought to lay some you ought to do it before it gets too dead gum hot all right we’re go [Music]

Thanks I just got some from Walmart haven't gotten to put them in. Was gonna this week but we had rain finally so I can't complain try again on the weekend
How common are these drip system lines and drip line spickets fail or fall apart or break? I'm undecided between drip system or making one from PVC..
Also why are parts 1/2 inch and 1/4 inch size??
Those little shut off valves are handy! I need to put a filter on my mist system at my secret garden. You have a nice setup. Tell Hoss to give you more mailbox money. You just about have me convinced to buy from them
Hope your cleanup is going well.
💦💦💦
😁👍
Is your main line 1/2 or did you have to go to 3/4 to service the whole area at once? From my research, I forget the number, but there was a limit to the number of emitters you could put on a half inch line which was something like less than 10.
Great job!
Looks really good. Great timing for me as I need to set mine up now. Really like those individual container shut off valves.
Looks good, Alan! That's exactly how I water my blackberries in raised beds, my banana plants and my grape vines. I've even added the fertilizer injector from Hoss to add water soluble fertilizer to the plants.
Thank you so much for this information. I have been wanting to do this for years but am quite frankly intimidated. I may have to give a small section of my garden a go and see if I like it. I have a feeling once I get started I will love it. Many thanks and blessings ♥
Thanks Alan, great info!! One question I have , how many emitters do you have running off that timer at a time?
This setup would work perfect for my 40 earthboxes.
But I "thought" there was an issue with water pressure to the last boxes on the rows if this isn't designed as a loop. Do you not run into that problem?
One lesson I have learned is to set up my cages/trellises and irrigation when we plant. So much easier than having to push foliage aside to do it later.
Good explanation. I use a filter and pressure reducer on city water. Cable tie on the wicking tub with the emitter close to the main so the tube can be slipped under the cable tie
