hello everyone today I’m going to plant up three of these planter boxes with some of my annuals in order to make a garden border now I did a similar planting idea with these last year I made a shade border that was actually on that wall but now that that has become my Dalia and Zenia border these are going to be full sunflowers and I’m going to put them in front of where the air conditioning units are and I will get those all into place and show you at the end of this video but first I want to talk a little bit about the containers just because they’re the best type of container which is a free container so I got these from someone on Instagram I had mentioned that I was looking for a certain type of planter seeing if anyone had recommendations and she’s like hey I’m giving these away for free cuz we’re moving and the color of them matches really well with the wood and the color of the brick so it was perfect and again free I did add little plant feet that stick on to the bottom one of them fell off one of these but 11 out of 12 stayed throughout the entire season my original plant so last year when I planted these they had caladiums in them and I brought these in to overwinter my cadium and have them come back next year but I would say within a few weeks of having these inside a little millipedes came crawling out so they all got kicked back outside I can’t remember if I removed I don’t think I removed the cladium bulbs at the time but I knew they were not going to be saved so those have been removed I put in fresh milliped free so far potting soil in here and we’re going to plant these up so this is what I think my planting idea is going to be I’m going to put three plants in each of these I feel like it could be four but I know they’ll grow so I’m only going to do three and I’m going to do two double Delight blush Rose Bonas on either side like this and then I’m going to do one of these which is the angel face Cascade pink angelonia in the center this is where I thought I could probably squeeze into angelonia here but again they will grow in fact let’s go over the height and spacing information just in case you do plan to follow this basic information so the double Delight blush Rose Bonia is it’s full depart Sun 8 to 14 in tall and spacing it says minimum 12 maximum 16 so not following that that uh this one is 8 to 14 in tall and it says minimum 10 to 14 so this one will grow a little bit more vertically than the Bonas not that either of them are like trailing plants at all uh which is the point because this is going to go on the ground like it wouldn’t make sense to put a sweet potato vine in here because that would just fall into the deck a few inches down and then just kind of Trail along it so I wanted things that would stay more upright and that is what I’m going with so two two of the three I’m going to plant up like this and then just to get a little bit of variety in one of the boxes I’m going to do still the angelonia in the center but then the selenia apricot Bonas on the edges and these are let me hold two of the Bonas next to each other so you can see the color difference but the double Delight blush Rose is more pinky like they’re very similar but this one’s more pinky this one is more yellowy orange and the Lea are also a little bit different so this one has can you even really tell it has like that darkish red color on the underside these don’t really have that they’re just kind of green on the underside so there is a little bit of a difference also the leaves on this are more like yellowy green this is more of like a bluish I’d say leaning green so there is a little bit of difference between the leaves not just the flowers but let’s go ahead I like I said I already put in fresh milliped free potting oil and then I’m going to grab the biotone and I guess that’s everything that I need to plant these up so this might be a relatively quick task which is great but then I need to get everything into place and one of the issues right now is that where these are going to go is where I’m currently storing like my potting soil bags my extra pots my broom everything that is stored on my deck is over there so I have to move that or bring things inside that don’t need to be out here but we’ll figure that out when we get there so let’s go ahead and plant these up I had a few different ideas for what I was going to do with these border well I call them borders these boxes at first I was contemplating sewing some dwarf Zenia seeds which I hope I have room for um I was also contemplating some miniature Dalia seeds but I because everything on the back deck is kind of sticking with a color scheme of pink orange and purple the dwarf doas and dwarf zenas it’s a mix so I couldn’t control the color like I wouldn’t know what color the flower was going to be on the seeds I started so I did think I would just like a better planting plants that I know what they look like so that’s why I swapped that up and it does happen every year where there are things I plan to grow even some seeds I start and I just don’t have room for and I used to shove things in and I’ve realize that even though I do still space things closer together than one would recommend I don’t do it as close as I used to because that just doesn’t give the best growing environment for the plants and they don’t really get a chance it is windy so I need to use the strap on this hat so now we will get these planted let me know if you normally use your strap or not I don’t know for me like just feeling it under my chin I don’t love that feeling so I usually just tuck mine inside the Hat unless it is windy like it is today and it has been we’ve been having some very interesting weather here it still has been for the most part warmer than normal but now it’s kind of cooling down so we are getting more storms well not more storms than normal but a lot of storms right now um in a row because of the fluctuating temperatures look how pretty that one is and I’m 90% sure no dead heing necessary let’s see fertilize regularly features deadheading not necessary fragrant flowers continuous Bloom I don’t know if I’ve ever sniffed these let’s give them a sniff I can’t tell if I smell anything but it is windy so the wind is blowing into my face I don’t know I’ll give him a sniff on a less windy day but let’s grab the tag and put you in I’m probably going to need to add some extra potting soil in here too but let’s get everything in so next we’ll do the angel face Cascade pink angelonia I’ve never grown angelonias at all and something just not to feel bad about I mean I have been gardening for like I said kind of 5 years here but still feel relatively new in general to gardening but there’s a lot I don’t know there’s a lot of plants I can’t recognize there’s a lot of plants I’ve never grown and don’t feel bad I used to feel bad not knowing everything even though no one ever knows everything there is about any certain subject so it’s been fun learning and seeing what I do and don’t like I’m trying to find the center of this box which I think two three there’s some like splits in the woods I’m trying to figure out where the actual Center is I think this is the center and this is one of those moments where like there is space in between here but I’m not going to overcrowd I think I’m really going to enjoy this and I think cuz I had pots growing there last year what did I have there last year I honestly for the life of me can’t remember I think it was just I think my lemon tree was over there I think I just had a mix of plants over there I think the apple trees were over there um so there should be drips up for these once everything is in place that’s when I go through and set up my drip because some things might stay the same some things might change and I don’t want to like set up emitters for things that I end up moving so now I need to grab some extra potting soil to add and again I’m just using a nursery pot getting it into my face and filling that up the rest of the way I’ve been asked before too if I like use mulch I did bring up mulch one year and I realize that mulch is heavier like if I’m carrying up the same size bag of mulch as I am compost or potting soil The Mulch was just heavier I think it was wood chip mul mulch I can’t remember but now I just use compost as mulch like that’s what I top dress with and that’s been fine and for me with containers as well usually the plants grow so quickly that they cover the containers because one of the reasons people recommend mulch is to add a top layer to the soil so that the sun doesn’t dry it out as quickly but I find that the plants grow so quickly that it basically Shades the soil from the Sun anyway I need one more bucket full of this all right I think this is looking good so I’m going to plant up the other two like I said the only thing that’s getting switched out is that so I’m doing an exact duplicate of this which is sitting over there then the only thing I’m switching out are the Bonas on the end so since the planting process is going to be the exact same I will speed through that and then we will get everything into place watered in and I’ll show you what it looks like but I’m excited I think this is going to look really pretty [Music] here is the Border all in place for the most part and I really like it right now I have this Rose sitting over here I might decide to put something on the other side but the hose hookup is back there so I’m trying not to over crowd that space too much we’ll see how that goes but I think I really like this I already like it now and I can’t wait to see it fill in one thing is that just in case anything happens to the air conditioning units knock on wood this fence unit thing does like move it’s not actually secured to the ground or anything like that so I can’t put anything here that I couldn’t move or have anything for example like climbing up the fence because these might need to be moved and they are I they’re not lightweight but they are lightweight enough that I can move them around easily if that happens but then again knock on wood that that doesn’t happen but this is the Border I think it’s really cute and we should just ignore the mess of everything that I’ve shoved over to the side that used to be there I will figure that out at a later date so that’s going to be everything for this video thank you for hanging out with me and making some container borders I feel like I’m about to get blown away so I’m probably going to go back inside but I like love this so much the garden is really coming together so thank you so much for watching I will see you in the next video bye

  1. Your garden is spectacular mine is doing well to everything is growing so fast and beautiful the butterflies are laying eggs all over the host plants.

  2. In zone 6 Ohio & they're talking about a heat wave next week. We've had no rain & it's not looking good. So out comes the soaker hoses! lol And I definitely need a hat!

  3. I rarely ever use the strap on my sun hat, other than for hanging off my arm when I’m not wearing it. I really like angelonia in the garden. They are great ornamentally and as a cut flower. I also like that they don’t seem to be attractive to any pests. I’ve only tried the angelface wedgewood blue and the super blue angelonia and they seem to have different vigor so I’m curious about the cascade pink. Thanks again for sharing your garden! ❤

  4. Beautiful border. I have found over the years that my garden doesn't have to be perfect to be beautiful.Thank you for all of your wonderful ideas.
