[Music] still [Music] beever Well Spring is finally here the sun well it’s doing its best to come out and now is the time to get into your garden get to work this weekend sort out all those soggy plants and get it ready for the warmer weather laugh is my happy after and I know last time IED like so many Gardens across Australia if we left this one alone it would get out of control in no time so there’s a few basic gardening jobs we can do to make sure it stays looking good into the warmer months now is the perfect time to be pruning all your plants because as the weather warms up they start putting on Leaf growth now what you’re trying to do is just take off the apical dominance which is the top bud and that way all the buds below will burst into life and you’ll have a really nice dense bushy plant now if you’re concerned about taking off too much as a rule of thumb most plants can have about a third taken off with not a problem at [Music] all when it comes to pruning flowering shrubs you need to know when the plant is going to flower so you don’t prune off any potential flowers hydranges however are summer flowering plants so if we prune it back now we’re going to get lots of regrowth and then lots of flowers so I’m going to take it back to the last two big swollen Buds and that’s going to produce a really nice bushy plant if you can’t find two swollen buds for example this one only has one bud just take it back to the bud that’s most prominent before the fork in the [Music] plant when it comes to pruning your formal shapes and HED chances are you haven’t done anything over winter and that’s because your plants aren’t growing but now is the time to give them a prune back and it works on the same Principle as pruning your shrubs by cutting back you’re going to promote new growth and you’ll have a nice bushy hedge it also gives you a chance to take off any insect damage like this and once this is all tidied up I’ll get on to taking the fronds off those big Palms when you’re pruning a palm like this you want to take off all the leaves that are dying back you don’t want to take off too many otherwise it looks like a strange sort of pineapple so it’s a balance of getting rid of the yellow leaves without it looking too [Music] naked this is a really common weed called tradis gantia and it loves the fact that the soil is soaking wet and now that the weather is going to heat up as well it’s just going to take off you can see here how it’s jumped the edging and has gone onto the ground grass area so we need to get rid of all of this now weeds around the base of plants are really bad news cuz they suck up water and they suck up nutrients and then your ornamental plants don’t perform as well when you’re pulling them out just remember it’s great to try and get as much done as possible but you’re never going to get it all done weeds will always come back so as you’re doing it just think this isn’t so bad it’s quite enjoyable I’m out in the garden enjoying [Music] myself water log plants are a really common thing this time if you take this pot for example it’s pretty much full to the top it’s going to take all the air away from the roots and become pretty disgusting mosquito breeding ground so I’m going to tip it over here is the culprit if you have a look around here you can see the roots of going through the hole and completely blocked it up so I’m just going to take a drill and I’m going to free that [Music] up yep that’s doing the job perfectly now I’m going to set this back up on some bricks and that way it’s not going to clog up [Music] again spring is the perfect time to be putting plants into the garden because as the temperature warms up you’re going to get good growth and they’re not going to sit there and sulk like they would in the middle of winter now this is quite a hot spot in the garden I know that because the ban Villa is doing really well so you may think why am I planting fuches normally they quite like a shady position but this Vari called sunr tolerates heat really well it does need a bit of water but if we give it water down here it’s going to reward us with flowers all the way through to the end of autumn F [Music] Sun now is the time to be fertilizing your plants do it any earlier and it’s just a waste you need the heat in the air and the soil for the plants to be able to take up the nutrients and because most of the growth is New Leaf growth you need an all round f is something like a pelti manure or a Blood and Bone is absolutely perfect when you start to see Buds and Flowers then you can switch to something higher in potassium come with [Music] I our last spring maintenance job is to add some mulch now this is really important to suppress any weed growth we did put in all the hard work ripping them out so we don’t want them coming back quickly and it also makes the garden look complete and nice and finished so once this is done we sit back and enjoy that Summer Sun [Music]
