ladies and gentlemen it is an absolutely gorgeous spring day and today I providing you guys with a one-year update on my front yard Pond and my native plant garden but always remember before we get started Earth is my planet Earth is my plan so over the past month and a half I’ve been stepping outside and just witnessing my garden flourish and I decided why not provide you guys with an update seeing as this Garden did not even exist a year ago and now it is a lush Oasis of Natural Life plant fertility vivaciousness eye candy and it provides amazing habitat for all types of bees pollinators butterflies insects frogs and even some fish so let’s go ahead and start breaking the area down plant by plant but in the spring it is truly at its Climax and it looks amazing [Music] so hopefully you guys enjoyed that little Montage but let’s delve into the plant so when you walk down the sidewalk you are greeted with an absolute flush and flurry of flowers so let’s just start breaking them down I planted two tiny plugs of this gorgeous evening pink Prim Rose and this guy does spread underneath the ground and is absolutely taken off these are also called buttercups because when you get a flower and you sniff it it definitely leaves some yellow residue around your nose now we have some ground cover in the front which is a mimosa that actually is in the flower right now and then you also have a coreopsis now I like having the pink Primrose because it absolutely contrasts like some pink lemonade with this gorgeous Lantana that the previous homeowner had put in the ground I removed it planted it here and it absolutely has taken off and then in terms of more native plants we have this like I think it’s called like a Sunburst or Sunshine yellow Texas primrose now this is a native plant to Texas very unique foliage in that absolute fire lemon yellow definitely is eye-catching now moving around the front you also have this wonderful Mystic spires Salvia this is a cross between the Henry duberg and the salvia longest spata and bees and pollinators absolutely love it also I am sorry about the car noise behind me that will probably interrupt the video but I’m on a very busy street so bear with me now another native plant that I added is this super cool Inland Sea Oats now this is a grass it has absolutely gotten Lush flush and has filled up this space spectacularly it provides a nice contrast in terms of its Leaf shape that I think makes everything come together perfectly now on the front we have a pollinator magnet in the form of this Greg’s blue mlow now bees and butterflies love it it looks amazing and it also does self spread throughout the ground and so you can just dig it up and plant more of it in other spots of the garden which is very cool and the reason why I plant a ton of natives in the first place is because the insects are adapted to interact with these plants so your garden really does come to life when you have plants that are native and indigenous to the area that you reside in now coming along this wall of the pond you have my lipstick Salvia which is also called an Autumn Sage they look amazing these are some plants that I’ve gotten at Lowe’s that haven’t done super well in the ground but I think mounded up in between the Rocks these guys have taken off as have my Gua absolutely unique in the flowers and the red on the leaves definitely does stand out which is amazing you have more inland Sea Oats a simple dwarf yopon Holly shrub right around the back and then more evening Prim Rose in the Texas Prim Rose now one of the principles I utilize to create an aesthetic looking Garden is I spam the same plant so this plant is actually four different plants and it provides a nice flush of blue you got multiple yellow plants which is a nice pallet of yellow and then you have the palet of pink right next to it so my rationale is that if you use the same plant in multiple locations it does provide some Rhythm and a little bit of symmetry to your Landscaping aesthetic and that’s why I have some pink Primrose on the backside and some yellow Primrose back here as well as is the case with some Greg’s blue mlow over here it’s kind of on the back end and then some Greg’s blue on the front as well now one exotic that I did want to use just as a standout and for the colorful foliage was this bad boy right here this nice purple can ofy and it actually has just flowered which is awesome so yeah there are some Exotics that I do place in here and there I’m not 100% this or 100% that I like a nice healthy mix and it truly does lend to a really cool aesthetic when you do mix a ton of natives with a couple of unique looking exotic plants So speaking of which coming along the front you have this Rose I don’t even remember what it is it’s like a mounding kind of spilling Rose it is non-native but it was on sale at Lowe’s and so those are kind of when I splurge on the roses and exotic plants is when they’re super cheap and I feel like they can add a nice versatile pop and that also is the case with this knockout rose right here it looks absolutely wonderful and then we do have that um sunshine lustrum in the front but I honestly wish I would have replaced this Sunshine lustrum with the gold rush yopon Holly because this is a native plant it’s smaller and it provides the same color hit now another plant that is not native to Houston but is native to the americaas is my trais cantia P or the wondering dude the purple heart plant and this guy does traverse has amazing flowers and adds another nice flush of purple unique color foliage to the Garden that helps Stand Out amongst the sea of green and then getting into the pond itself gosh guys we had the native horse tail re which looks amazing in the water and a Pico weed so the Pico weed is in the middle of the pond and it also adds that tropical aesthetic being a native plant though is very cool because you can see all the bees just swarming the lavender colored flowers and just absolutely indulging in the nectar of the Gods uh I think that also is used to refer to seamen but whatever I digress they definitely do like utilizing the pickerel weed and it’s an amazing addition to any Water Garden or any Pond that you may have now while we’re on the subject of the pond there are a couple updates I want to provide in terms of things that have gone wrong with the pond number one the first like three fish I put in the pond got sniped out by some cranes which definitely sucks I had a sneaking suspicion that my fish were getting snatched and I surmise I am correct look who’s over here circumnavigating the pond bro I mean I guess I am bringing Wildlife into the garden I just didn’t know it was to this extent oh my God who else has a great stor a crane or whatever species of bird this is in their yard but since then the plants have taken off and provided a ton of cover for all the fish which is good but also man being underneath this pine tree the pump gets super clogged with the ton of pine needles leaves and some algae too so the pump when it gets clogged does not have the same water pressure to pump the water through the waterfall so the waterfall is a weak Trickle and it kept leaking water out of the pond as well so that would lower the level and make it easy pickings for the cranes to get the fish but since there’s so many aquatic plants in the pond I just completely turned off the waterfall which doesn’t give you the the noise kind of pleasure the ASMR type of vibe but when it does do is it keeps the water level pretty steady and it also doesn’t use any electricity so this is a 100% natural pond it also does lend to frogs going in there laying more eggs having a bunch of tadpoles and then of course I added one more goldfish in there just to eat up all the mosquito larae so that’s not a problem but there’s so many plants I can’t even find the Goldfish if I wanted to and one other aspect about the pond which is cool are of course my water Lotus while they may not be in bloom right now when they are in bloom the the flowers are architectural I swear to God it is like the most beautiful display of what Mother Nature can create in this water garden so another cool aspect about when I built the pond was I utilized a ton of wood and rocks and so as the wood has broken down insects have divulged in the rotting wood and that’s just an infinite buffet for all the lizards that are around the pond and then the Rocks provide a home for the lizards so it truly is a self-sustaining ecosystem in terms of all the lizard life there’s some green anoles which are native and then Cuban brown anoles which look like dinosaurs and I think they’ve hybridized because sometimes I’ll see green andols with like crazy patterns on their back so it’s kind of cool but don’t quote me on that now my yucka have also provided a different Leaf texture and color scheme in the garden which I love they’ve gotten absolutely huge and seeing as the Pine Tree does suckle off a lot of the water that hits the ground level these guys do Thrive and survive in this area now speaking of the pine tree I got absolutely roasted and eviscerated on the no lawn’s subreddit of obviously rdit I posted a picture of this Garden through the year progress just to inspire people to show what planning some plugs can turn into and a Year’s worth of time right and everyone roasted me saying I’m going to kill the pine tree because I’m covering up its roof flare by building an above ground pond so I’m going to show you guys my YouTube viewers this and maybe anyone who potentially stumbled across the this from the sub is number one I made an above ground pond so I wouldn’t be destroying all the tree roots in the first place number two this pine tree has root flares that go only outside of the circle I created of the pond so this is what’s crazy to me is obviously oxygen is released through the roots there is a gas exchange right there but every place the roots are actually visible above ground is outside of this area and then on top of that 75% of this circle isn’t even covered above the natural grate of the land so all that’s here is what 2 in of leaf litter which would naturally be found in a forest yeah I took one for the team and for all the uh amateur arborists I guess who are roasting me saying I’m going to kill this tree which I mean maybe they’re right but I think there’s only about a 25% chance of that happening just from the roots in this area alone which none of them were even breaking the surface of the soil so yeah guys what I do for the random redditors Jesus but then coming around the backside you have a bunch of plants that I threw in in my most recent videos that are just in the ground and ready to take off but one plant that I did throw in a couple of years ago is this cut Leaf Daisy and it started as one plant it is self- Multiplied and now there are multiple stems and multiple plants of this dude which are tall and and it does still provide that yellow bursta color on the backdrop of the garden seeing as it is about 2 and 1/2 ft in its verticality now obviously I have missed a few plants that are intermixed in but overall I hope this has provided a great synopsis of what a Year’s worth of time can do to a native plant garden again I did this on a budget it started with nothing a year ago and here we are a year later and it looks absolutely Lush now in terms of my watering regimen I pull up in my truck and when plants look sad I’ll hit them with water if it hasn’t rained for like a week or two but overall there’s no irrigation and I rarely ever water these plants so yes nature truly is resilient and we started off from nothing to a circular bed to a pond to now a lush Garden at the end of the day so please man smash the like button on the way out get out there plant natives grab some small plugs they take off easier they’re cheaper grab some seeds just chunk them in the soil and always remember Earth is my planet Earth is my Planet drop some comments down below and I will catch you guys next time hopefully you guys did enjoy the update it’s been a long time coming but I rather wait a year to show you guys the full progress and process than to drop a week or two later and it looks the same until next time peace to win so I’m some that you should get a [Music]

  1. I've been watching your channel since the very first video and always look forward to a new drop. So cool to see how far this area has come in only a year and to see all the wildlife enjoying it!

  2. The bird was an American, or White egret, and they will eat ALL your fish. Just stock with goldfish for them. 😊

  3. Beautiful! Love your front garden! Hopefully those red cannas will bring in some hummers! Hummingbirds love my red cannas.

  4. I’m thinking the Heron bird heard the waterfall sound from your pond that’s how he found the fish. Now that you don’t have it going anymore it shouldn’t attract those fish eating birds. Great looking flowers!!

  5. That Yaupon Holly makes a great tea. America's only caffeine-producing plant, not only are you helping rebuild the local ecosystem, but you're getting a lifetime supply of delicious tea! That's a win-win situation.

  6. Looks great – keep up the good work! Those water plants are super abundant where I’m from. They are invasive to rivers and lakes in Brasil because it spreads so fast. Fun fact: it’s also an edible plant 😉

  7. Man it looks good! I know you already have some of these but Turks cap would look good in there too! Stay blessed my man!

  8. Generations of Texans have incorrectly called those evening promises butter cups. I know my family did. 🤪

  9. Beautiful! I have been watching you for about two years and watched you put these area's together it's a joy to see how everything has come together.

  10. Real interesting, we get Lantana here in Australia but its a weed and dominates native plants with this huge spiky vine.

  11. Not two minutes in and he’s talking about the pink lemonade colorway of the flowers 😂 I wish I knew this channel existed sooner

  12. Beautiful, your hard work has paid off. You inspire me to start doing this around my trees. And look into more native plants.

  13. Paul plantu is knowledge…
With a capital K…… "Knowledge " brilliant, love watching you and listening to you xx earth is my planet 🙌 x Paul, carry on doing what you do, we've learnt a lot from the master ❤

  14. I always love your videos. I am in Seabrook and I am so happy to see a channel from my zone. We would love for you to come to our library and teach a class on native plants. Have you ever considered an Aquascape pond. I think it is up your alley because it filters through a wetland filter and is also chemical free.

  15. Hope all is well on the piece of land and not fill up like a swamp with all the crazy rain other there.

  16. We had bought like 12 koi fish for our front pond, a Crane came and cleaned them out like a week later

  17. I’m curious. Not a lot of folks your age are gardeners and even less understand the importance of native planting. Just wondering what your friends and neighbors think of your passion.

  18. Hi Paul! OMG… pond, fish, frogs & plants was an amazing idea. Everything looks fantastic. I’m super proud of you. I followed you since the beginning of your gardening journey. ❤
