So far my only strategy with moss is if it's happy I leave it tf alone and just keep doing the same thing. I've noticed that constant replenishing water seems to work, but then again I've set up countless "perfect" conditions and watched moss die. For example that species on the left of the log in the first picture was havested from the exact same spot as the one on the right but is suffering under the same conditions. I noticed another piece is doing well in the shade. So I suppose in the wild the sunlight was dappled "just right" in the tiny locality where it was. Idk, I've seen moss grow in the worst conditions outside and the "best" inside. Always a trial and tribulation.
