Learn how I revamp my aqua pot container with older perennials mixed with new sun loving annuals. I love using the perennials that I used for the fall with my summer annuals. Today I used a big pop of color petunia, and replaced my pansies that are soon going to die in the heat of our zone 8.

[Music] hi guys Kim here welcome to Backyard blooms in today’s video we are going to just do a couple of quick little things I got an aqua pot right here this this is the mediumsized aquapot and this is the fall planting that I had in here I had a couple of pansies that still look good this time still looks gorgeous and I love how delicate this is and it brings some brightness to this container this blue container so I’m going to leave this in there so we’re going to use my Hy Hy knife and we’re going to dig this up and then we’re going to like still put new soil in here because these plants took all the nutrients out of the soil so make sure you change your soil each season or if not at least every year I promise you your plants are going to be so much happier and they’re going to produce more flowers and be more productive and healthy looking if you do that as well so this is Miss America and I’ve cut it back and cut it back and it has like bloomed so I’m going to get that out of the way I do have a grass in here that I’m still going to keep but I I’m going to I I am still going to pull it completely out of the pot and then I’m going to give it a little root trim and then we’re going to put it right back in there just like if we had just bought it okay so make sure when you’re repurposing plants that you do that like you completely take it out of the pot clean it off keep most of the root system don’t cut too much of the roots off and then you’re going to put it right back in there like you just had bought it so I’m going to repurpose this time in this grass right here and we’re going to put some gorgeous new bright bright colors in here so keep in touch we’re going to get this completely cleaned out we’re going to tip it over we’re going to cut some of these plants out we’re going to remove all the water in there clean this container and just start completely fresh really do like these gloves these are called H2O I feel like like for one I can like touch my phone with it too because of the touch right here but it like has not worn off and keeps my nails pretty clean I kind of like them H2O all right so this is the time we’re going to get it out I’m just going to use this H hor knife right here I love this knife I have the link in my descriptions for that I use it all the time guys all the time so this is pretty dry right now it’s in there it’s in there okay for s his balls out of my way here all right so I am going to give this a good soak it’s really really dry like I said I never want to put another dry plant into the Container because it may never like completely absorb the water so let’s give this a soak know what that is we’ll get that out I could even divide this plant if I want to that’s all you have to do is just kind of like break it in half I might do that then I’d have to plant it somewhere else too just to show you I think I’m going to go ahead and kind of split this and then I could plant this in my Cottage Garden so what I’m going to do is get my Hy Hy knife or you could use a root Slayer or whatever else and just kind of split it right in the middle might just break apart too not oh the roots are in there good here we go that worked better see how we kind of broke it in half and then I can plant this in one container and this in a different container all right now everything else in this container can go I know these pansies right here are still looking precious but we are in in Charlotte North Carolina Zone 8 and as soon as the heat hits these plants are not going to like it and it’s important to go ahead and get our summer annuals out in the into the ground or into the soil before it starts to get real hot because instantly it will turn from 70° to like 90 here it’s crazy so we want to make sure that we even though they look gorgeous and if I even gifted them to somebody or whatever which would be nice but they’re not going to last so I mean it maybe only would last a week and it’s just really really not worth it so we’re going to get all this soil out like I said I can just pretty much dump and this is already really rooted in like completely all the way to the bottom and I’m going to show you so none of this soil is going to be usable but yeah look at that plant it’s still really pretty but I’m going to replace it with something even prettier [Music] promise you and then please please never put anything down in the bottom to save on soil because I’m putting a lot of plants in here and they need the room to grow down and like I said this is already like rooted pull this out it’s already rooted all the way down look look at this look at all that so soil so yeah no usable soil here whatsoever and if I put something down in here then I’m going to lose my moisture for the roots to grow down so I’m promising you guys it’s really not worth it just invest in the good quality soil it has a self-watering system down here this is where it waks up the soil that’s what was in there kind of like a little small core I really don’t have any water in here whatsoever so I need to get this all cleaned out dump this existing soil somewhere I’m just going to throw it in my garden I have a little bit of soil down in there I’m going to put this into my Cottage Garden and then re replenish it with very much fresher soil actually have a common ation of espoma soil today and a little bit of proven winners left over to to fill this pot so I’m going to use both of them and yeah not going to hurt it all right like I said have some of this left over from my tomato planter so I need to use all this up go ahead and insert this all in [Applause] here now you notice that it did have that like small hole at the very bottom so I want to make sure that that gets pushed down into there push it down nicely then I’m going to top it off with this foma soil cuz I just had it left over still good two quality good soils [Applause] here all right guys so these are the plants including what I just told you that I’m going to put back into this container that I thought would help brighten this container up and make it look very very summery so this is is seniorita blka it is called it’s a clei hybrid and this gets 48 in tall so this is definitely going to be my Thriller and Jenny from Creekside always says that this one is an under un underestimated plant so I did plant some that was pink before in my very front container in the aqua poot that did really really well but it is gorgeous look at that bloom so so pretty going to give me a lot of height I do have like a little bit of a one that kind of fell over here so probably need to prune that one back well it just kind of fell off right there I could probably propagate that but this is a pretty good size plan I’m not going to be too worried about it so whenever you’re designing your container you want to like assess like is someone going to look at this container like all the way around if so then you want to put your Thriller in the middle if someone’s not going to see your planter all the way around you want to put it towards the back now when you come out my back door to my patio this is where I’m at no one’s going to really see this backside container they’re going to like kind of come out and see more of this front area so I’m going to put this one towards the back so I’m going to put this one over here and then I’m going to put my grass back over here and then when I come out I’m going to CL constantly see these Gorgeous Flowers and I’m not going to see just that grass now I’m putting the grass back in here because it gives me great fall interest as well and then in the fall like I can like leave that in there and I can replant that plant somewhere else in my Cottage Garden where I’m going to get some fall interest as well with uh not so much flowers but just interest and it does like have like a spike of like a plume that’s came even described the plume it’s not a flower but just a spike that’s got little fuzzy stuff all over it that that did not really come out right we’ll look at the tag and see if the tag will describe it any better but let me tell you about seniorita Blanca senorita Blanca and there’s the flowers there’s it together not really root bound but just break up the roots a little bit Prairie winds grass that’s what it looks like and those are those plumes that I told you about right there so let’s talk about the Prairie winds desert Plains fountain grass it gets 48 in tall it says the features this large fountain grass makes a beautiful focal point in a full in a fall Garden sorry fall Garden large tan bottle brush flowers are produced at top the upright vase shaped clump of green foliage red orange and yellow fall color so yeah that was the main reason I had bought this plant it was gorgeous when I planted it in the fall and those little plumes that I was describing it is large tan bottle brush flowers gorgeous got little pieces coming off of it where I split it I’m going to put the part that I cut towards the back so you can’t see it okay so there is my Thrillers I’ve got the seniorita what did I say it was Blanca senorita Blanca and then my fountain grass Prairie winds fountain grass and then I’m going to keep both of these in this container so I remember what I planted and then I’m going to go ahead and plant my th so here’s the time and that’s what it looks like right there look so pretty let me tell you about the time it’s a mounding Aroma selection with variegated foliage and pink blooms it’s got pink blue it’s got pink blooms I didn’t know that I don’t see the pink blooms yet but yellow blooms white blooms creamish yellow yellowy blooms maybe it will do pink does best in light well- drained soil and this is time so this is a gorgeous one to add to your herb garden as well so the next thing that we’re going to add to our garden is a super tunia called raspberry rush and this is my big bright of color that I want to add that just brings me cheeriness to the Garden this raspberry Rush is so gorgeous it’s a proo owners plant super tunia raspberry Rush how gorgeous that is right there let me tell you about the super tunia raspberry rush it has a mounding trailing habit you can plant it to hard Frost it is an annual except zones 10 a to 11b and fertiliz for best results so there you go raspberry Rush have two of these yes I’m stuffing them in there and that’s why I don’t put anything at the bottom because they have roots to they have time the roots can grow down here right one more plant in here you guys and I love this look how funky this is this is called proven accent Silver Bullet there look at this a’t that fun it’s so fun let me tell you about this proven accent Silver Bullet it gets SI to 10 in tall so it doesn’t get very tall it is an aresia it is a mounded plant its growth is for foliage and it is an annual except zones 5 a to 9B so this will come back for me so I need to make a note that this will be an annual and I can either keep this in this container or I can plant it out into my garden later on so this is a win for this plant right here it’s got great root system we’re going to put that spilling over right here and I’m going to put it like at an angle kind of like this instead of straight up and down we’re going to put it like this so we can show her off right there look at that this will fill in here it’s going to be so pretty can I add my B tone guys did not I’m going go ahead and add it now and since I do have annuals in here I’m going to go ahead and give it a little bit more food this is called The Proven Winners premium continuous release plant food and Jenny turned me on to this but before that Laura turned me on as well because these proven winter plants right here they work really good with the proven winter soil with the proven Winter’s continuous release food and then this is the slow release and then the other is fast release the water soluble but anyways they all work really really good together to get the best performance so they’ve already done the trials you can trust them that believe me they already know that this is what it takes to get Gorgeous Flowers right here so we’re going to throw some of that in here too and the hole over here for the um cuz this is a self watering pot I can put a couple of teaspoons of this down into the hole as well and then the water Reserve will also have some of the fertilizer down here and it will be soaked up by the roots from down below so that’s how it gets its water water’s down here it soaks it up through the soil and The Roots just expand all the way down to the water of course we had to water this in originally really well first because I put dry soil in there all right so I have this other little piece of grass that I need to plant and I’m not ready to do that right now even though I watered this really well I still need to like make sure the roots are covered I’m going to use my existing pot that I just took my senorita Blanca [Applause] out and then I’m going to put this in here until I’m ready to plant it all right so next this is where my little drain ho is so when I overfill it will spill out of here and then this is my water reservoir right here can you see right there that’s where I’m going to insert the water and then I always like to put this next to this in my containers that way I can see when I’m filling it with water when it’s full right there because if I had it on the other side I wouldn’t be able to see and I have to like constantly look around so that’s kind of helpful to have this this water Reserve insert close to the drain hole down there so I’m going to let all this dry and then after it dries and kind of bounces back up from after me just putting some water on it it’s going to spruce up and be bright and Cherry and then I’ll come back and do like a little clip of when everything starts to pop up and looks good for my final end of the video so make sure you watch the end of video the video for that so make sure you like share and subscribe my videos for me please like I said The more likes I get the more the YouTube World sends it out the more money I can make and the more videos I can make for you and make sure you share it with your friends post it on Instagram Facebook whatever you have if you’ve got flower friends that you know that would like my video kind of share it out to them and help me out so I could um get more subscribers and more views and like I said I hope you got some inspiration I love this Aqua poot if you have an area that is hard to get dripped to or if you can’t if you’re you’re one that constantly forgets to water and your plants die then this is for you because that’s all you have to do with just one day a week is fill this container up so if you like okay Saturday morning I have to fill my container up and then that’s all you have to do for the week after you get it planted and they’re going to be happy and healthy and their roots are going to grow to the bottom and they’re going to get an adequate amount of water and they’re going to like love life and you’re going to love it because you don’t have to constantly remind yourself oh I need to go water my container before I go to bed or they’re droopy and I got to get out there or like you look and you’re like oh my gosh they’re dead and you just spent like flowers are expensive you guys they are no joke anymore you cannot I mean it is expensive hobby but it brings you so much joy like the flowers and the blooms and just looking at it and taking care of stuff and making knowing that you grew it out to this beautiful container like you put it together you can copy my design it doesn’t matter like I I love it when people copy me like I’ve copied others I’ve copied Lura from garden answerer I’ve copied Jenny from Creekside so definitely copy me if you’d like like it’s no problem I’m here to give you ideas and inspiration so I’ll see you in the next video friends and goodbye

  1. Loving this summer container with the mixed foliage, texture & interest and that pop of Raspberry colour and having this variegated Thyme is a great idea and will add scent to it ! I am amazed at how your climate can jump from 70 to 90 degrees in a matter of just a few days. Thank you for sharing your gardening tips & beautiful garden & patio dear Kim 😃💚

  2. I always enjoy your gardening videos! We call the grass plumbs in our area, (SE Pennsylvania), bunny tails. I first heard that at in my local gardening center when I purchased my first ornamental grass. For years, I could only get them to grow one season, and last year, I asked them why, and they said, you must have been planting the annual type. So, then I made sure I planted a perennial grass. I had never thought of that throughout the years. I love them, they provide interest in gardens. Happy Gardening!!

  3. Hello Kim, please tell me how I can contact you or you contact me. I live a mile from Calvary church. I’m not a master gardener but I have a beautiful garden that I would love for you to see.

  4. So excited for my visit Kim so I can find some different or plants I can’t find here in Georgia. I need to replace the spring plants in my containers and my window boxes on my garden shed. I love my knife too especially for my hostas
