Reinventing the interior of an existing house with a distinct post-modern aesthetic, the architect, Placement, designs a dreamy, contemporary family home. Despite being a small space, Selby House celebrates connection and openness, while joinery integrates the owners’ love of colour and is both practical and durable.
Located on lush acreage in Victoria’s Yarra Valley, Selby House enjoys sweeping views of native trees and ferns and is surrounded by wildlife, with black cockatoos and galahs often heard in the distance. A lover of interior design who enjoys living in beautiful spaces, Jeremy Wortsman, homeowner and project manager of Selby House, initially came to Placement with a smaller brief restricted to the entryway and joinery. “The existing kitchen actually bottlenecked the entry and then adjacent to that was the dining room, so our initial task was to reinvent that space and make it flow a little better,” says Stephanie Kitingan, architect and co-director at Placement.
The way the architect has built more space within a small footprint is central to the interior design’s considered rejuvenation. One enters the home via a glazed conservatory, leading through to the main entry space, which is lined with Morrocan Clay Laminex joinery. “The entry is buffeted by an existing stair that funnels you either side through book-lined joinery and brings you into the new, reinvigorated spaces of the living, kitchen and dining,” says Kitingan. “The new kitchen, living and dining is actually all in one space and we fused joinery elements to break up the space and create these dedicated areas while still allowing for transparency.”
Durability and practicality were important considerations for the architect when it came to choosing materials for the home. With a growing family and a small dog, finding a material that could take the wear and tear of a the home was essential. “Laminex seemed like a really good candidate,” recalls Kitingan. “We were looking at the Laminex Matte because we wanted a consistent, soft finish to the hue of the joinery, especially because we’re basically employing that finish everywhere.”
In this way, the design of Selby House is a subtle nod towards Memphis Design, playing with colourful hues, bold forms and decor, geometry and the use of laminate. “Laminex has a history in Memphis Design too … so we wanted to carry that story through to the present day in a subtle and considered way,” says the architect. As the home is surrounded by a lot of greenery, colour is used to balance the green hues that dominate the home. “Moroccan is where we landed as it has a really beautiful complementary feel to the lush landscape.”
When the architect reflects on her favourite part of the project, apart from being able to fit so much in such a little space, Kitingan loves all the small spots where the family can simply sit and be. “The family is able to flex and breathe and grow in the space, as well as find moments of intimacy and respite,” says Kitingan. For Wortsman, he is most proud of the creativity that has gone into the design. “It’s always an enriching process when you’re working with lots of creative people and everyone has brought their own ideas – myself, my family, the builders, the joiners – and when you see that come together, it’s a beautiful thing.”

يقع منزل سيلبي في ريف بونورونج في منطقة سيلبي في سلسلة جبال يارا. المنزل نفسه عبارة عن منزل موجود يقع في وسط مساحة خضراء، لذا يمكنك الحصول على مناظر شاملة للأشجار المحلية والسراخس، وهناك الكثير من الحياة البرية حولك مثل الكوكاتو الأسود والجالا وما شابه. اسمي ستيف كيتينجان، وأنا مدير مشارك في Placement وكنا مهندسين معماريين لـSelby House. المنزل الحالي ذو جمالية ما بعد الحداثة وكان دورنا هو إعادة اختراع التصميم الداخلي. جاء جيريمي إلينا في البداية بملخص أصغر يحصرنا في المدخل، لذا كان المطبخ الحالي يعوق المدخل ثم بجواره كانت غرفة الطعام، وكانت مهمتنا الأولية هي إعادة اختراع تلك المساحة وجعلها تتدفق قليلاً أحسن. اسمي جيريمي وورتزمان، أنا مدير المشروع ومالك منزل سيلبي. بدأ المشروع في الأصل كمشروع نجارة لتوسيع مطبخنا والذي أصبح نوعًا ما محور التركيز الرئيسي حيث يتجمع الناس في المنزل وأيضًا لمنح أطفالنا نوعًا من غرف النوم الخاصة بهم أيضًا. لقد توسع النطاق أكثر قليلاً عندما أدركنا أن هناك مساحة أكبر في المنزل أردنا الانتقال إليها نوعًا ما. حدث الكثير من هذا أثناء الإغلاق أيضًا، لذلك كنا نقضي الكثير من الوقت في المنزل، لذا أصبحت الطريقة التي قضيناها والمكان الذي قضينا فيه وقتنا في المنزل أمرًا مهمًا حقًا في تلك المرحلة. عندما أنظر حولي في Selby House، أنا فخور حقًا بالكيفية التي تمكنا بها من إنشاء مساحة كبيرة ضمن مساحة صغيرة. تدخل المنزل عبر حديقة شتوية زجاجية وهذا يقودك إلى مساحة الدخول الرئيسية المبطنة بنجارة لامينكس المصنوعة من الطين المغربي. يصطدم المدخل بدرج موجود ينقلك إلى كلا الجانبين من خلال نجارة الكتب وينقلك إلى المساحات الجديدة المعاد تنشيطها في مطبخ المعيشة وتناول الطعام. إن المطبخ الجديد للمعيشة وتناول الطعام موجود في مساحة واحدة وقد قمنا بدمج عناصر النجارة لتقسيم المساحة وإنشاء هذه المناطق المخصصة مع السماح بالشفافية من خلالها. كانت المتانة والتطبيق العملي من العوامل الحاسمة المهمة حقًا عندما يتعلق الأمر باختيار المواد. لدى جيريمي ولوريلاي طفلان، وهي عائلة صاخبة ومتنامية ولديهم أيضًا كلبًا صغيرًا يتجول في جميع أنحاء المنزل، لذا كنا بحاجة إلى العثور على مادة يمكن أن تتحمل تآكل المنزل المتنامي. بدا Laminex وكأنه مرشح جيد حقًا، كنا ننظر إلى Laminex Matte لأننا أردنا لمسة نهائية ناعمة متسقة مع لون النجارة خاصة لأننا نستخدم هذه النهاية بشكل أساسي في كل مكان. كنا مهتمين بالميل إلى إيماءة خفية نحو تصميم ممفيس الذي يلعب أساسًا باللون الغامق والأشكال الجريئة والهندسة واستخدام الصفائح أيضًا. لدى Laminex في الواقع تاريخ كبير في تصميم Memphis أيضًا، فقد كان موجودًا منذ وقت طويل حتى الآن، لذا أردنا أن ننقل هذه القصة بشكل أساسي إلى يومنا هذا بطريقة دقيقة ومدروسة. اللون هو لون كبير حقًا هنا في المنزل، فنحن محاطون بالكثير من المساحات الخضراء والكثير من اللون الأخضر وهو أمر جميل ولكن يمكن أيضًا أن يكون ساحقًا حقًا في مرحلة ما، مع وجود شيء يوازنه، يمكن للون أن يلعب دورًا حقيقيًا دور كبير في ذلك. لذا، فإن الطين المغربي هو المكان الذي هبطنا فيه، فهو يتمتع بإحساس جميل حقًا بالمناظر الطبيعية الخصبة في الخارج، لذلك نعتقد أنه يعمل بشكل جيد حقًا. الجزء المفضل لدي من المشروع بصرف النظر عن القدرة على استيعاب الكثير في مثل هذه المساحة الصغيرة هو مجرد رؤية كل هذه الأماكن الصغيرة للجلوس والتواجد فيها. جيريمي ولوريلاي والأطفال كعائلة قادرون على المرونة والتنفس والنمو في الفضاء بالإضافة إلى إيجاد لحظات من الحميمية والراحة. أكثر ما أفتخر به هو مجرد رؤية كيف تضافرت الرؤية بالفعل وتجلت في الواقع. إنها دائمًا عملية إثراء رائعة عندما تعمل مع الكثير من الأشخاص المبدعين، حيث يقدم كل منهم أفكاره الخاصة. من الواضح أن شريكي وعائلتي جلبوا الأشياء، والبناؤون والنجارون جلبوا الأشياء، لذلك عندما ترى هذا النوع من العمل معًا، فهذا شيء جميل.

2:30 I have LITERALLY been sketchy ideas similar to this but I couldn't really see it clearly in my mind. So it's pretty cool to see what you have done with your space. I liked the view as you opened the sliding door. The shelve separated the two areas just enough to make the distinction without making it feel like a closed space.
Some interesting choices in this one. The entry is reminiscent of 70's elementary school, with the colours, volume, , materials, and design. To each their own.

Basic and boring
An actual walk around the space would really help. Also can you actually explain Laminex?
The video does not convey the atmosphere of the house; the bedrooms, living room, and bathroom are not shown; in general, there is no understanding or feeling of the internal space. The staircase, pink corner and shelves with vinyl records are shown several times. Previously, the video sequence immersed you in the atmosphere of the house, now it’s as if they didn’t let you in further than the hallway.
Completely lost as to what exactly was being achieved here. But, the owner loves it so happy for him and his family…
The design is so ice bc it is in line with natural principles of expansion and contraction. Cool home.
