these are the days that I’ve been dreaded I wins we have problems every single year we win and it affects one thing in particular that’s those potato ons cuz they always grow quite all so they always take quite a beating during any wind storm this has been going all night and it’s going to carry all day as well and I think we’ve already got a couple of casualties there is first early rocket potatoes as you can see the plants have been knocked over I don’t think the stems have broke not that I can see but the wind has definitely pushed it down and this tomato plant’s also getting a bit battering we’re going to have to move some things and try and offer them some shelter and just don’t real we’ve got another potato plant and as you can see that Fage has gone over but as long as those stems don’t snap this should be all right it’s got a bit of protection with that propagator but even so it still took a bit of a beating and he’s blowing his apple trees to the side as well there’s not much we can do but that definitely needs a steak in it or it’s going to kill this tree I don’t have any here so I’m just going to use anything I can to stop this tree being damaged just something like that is going to prevent those ruls from being ripped we TI and the other one I’ve just moved to a bike at least now that tree is not shaking back and forth but these potatoes we’re going to have to leave them and hope to pop through this cucumber probably needs a bit of string around it so we’ll get that done as well we don’t want us plants being killed just for the sake of a little bit of maintenance on this balcony once again another casualty it’s always the potato plants that come out worst I’ll get some strength and we’ll see if we can tie that up to that balcony just to give it a bit of support and hopefully again that one will pull through these tomato plants seem okay for the moment though which is great just going to have to make best job with this one and just tie them up as best I can unfortunately there is a couple of branches that we can’t do anything about cuz they’ve snapped so they won’t recover at all but we’ve still got plenty of good Fage left once that wind dies down we’ll get rid any broken branches and hopefully this potato pl’s going to pull through everything else seems to be holding its own in these Beds which is brilliant we’ve got that tomato plant in between these beds so that’s getting a bit extra protection so now it’s a case of grouping things together as much as we can that’s going to stop things getting blown over and they’ll Shield each other at the same time and since this cucumber’s leaning a bit we’re better off that a bit support because this is the one with the cucumbers already growing on it so again I’m going to use one of those poles at least for now we know it’s got that support it’s going to need of at next few hours just going to tie that on very Loosely though we don’t want to be pinching any of these cucumbers or the M break off it’s just going to stop this plant shaking around for next few hours I think that should be fine other than that there’s not much of anything else that we can do unfortunately we’ve just got to ride this one out and hopefully any plans that I’ve got damaged will recover over the next few days so we’ll see what happens then and if you want to see if the all pull through please hit that subscribe button press that notifications Bell and I’ll see you on a calmly day take care

  1. Can't ya put a wind breaker up Ivan, just a suggestion, may look odd but if it helps protect things for now. Sat down with a cuppa, overcast here today…

  2. Lovely this afternoon in NW Kent. It was well gloomy this morning. Wind isn't any trouble today. Sorry to see your lovely plants getting a battering. Are you by the coast?

  3. If you've any wood maybe you could make a frame for the potatoes to give them support.
Tony oneal on simply gardening made frames for his

  4. It's awful when you see all your hard work being blown about, but you'll soon discover the spots that have more shelter than others, and learn where not to leave 'breakable' plants.

  5. Shame about the windy conditions I suppose you could look on the bright side it could have been a lot worse, that's mother nature for you. All the very best Tim 😊

  6. Sorry to hear the damage caused by that wind. maybe it's best to invest in some sort of boards you can put up around the balcony railing for windy days

  7. We've just taken down some old fencing, basically before it fell down, and now, unwittingly, we've opened up our garden to a bit of a wind tunnel. British weather I'm afraid Ivan. What about creating a little hedge in pots? Box or Privet. They're fast growing. Obviously you'd need to weight the pots down. I'm with the suggestion of a wind break or two. Lliving so close to the sea side you should be able to pick up a few quite cheaply, you'd only need them while the plants get established. Alternatively, could you get some trellis? We've had the high winds here T'up North, heavy rain which has weighted down the plants and then the wind has been blowing a gale. All that said, you're plants are still looking really healthy. Keep going Ivan, soon be summer 🤞🤞

  8. Would a cheap stripy windbreak help Ivan? I can't believe the amount of rain and wind we have had over the last 2 days in the NW. I was outside staking my sunflowers to the pole securily in the rain and wind and 1am last night. The things we do for the love of plants!

  9. Same over here on the Isle of Man, Ivan. My Rocket spuds in containers have taken a bashing. Fingers crossed there'll be minimal damage when I check them over this evening. Such a shame as they're great tasting spuds.

  10. I think I may have wrapped some cling film around the bottom of the cucumber obelisk. That would have shielded it from the cutting winds. happy gardening 🙂

  11. Snap, we had bad winds last night more than 50mph, GH first storm, Jerusalem artichokes too a beating, and comfrey. I cut back the comfrey it will come back, the artichokes were well battered two out of the four lots I cut them back 4inch, they were bad. Hopefully it wont impact them but it is what it is.. Hopefully you don't lose nothing else.

  12. I taped up a snapped kiwi and its growing. winds are mini tornadoes – in our wind tunnel. My 6ft arches are now 4' 2' 😂 after tipping. Probably my biggest challeng is domestic cats

  13. Hi Ivan been pretty calm here in Shropshire today but really chilly this evening put some of my tomatoes in plastic greenhouse worry drop in temp would affect them? Hugs from Shropshire

  14. Thanks Ivan, I hope that you've saved what you needed too, it's been a bit breezy but heavy rain has been the problem for the last two days up here. Good luck. Take care and all the best. Stevie

  15. High wind is awful I know ,me and my husband moved all our containers into one place and surrounded them with 2 extra long windbreaks we saved all our plants that night then moved them back into position when storm was over , we live in northern Scotland and very often have to deal with adverse weather, I watch weather reports like a hawk so I can get organised if need be , think windbreaks might help you 😀

  16. Wow that potato plant is massive. I’ve a question from someone new to gardening. How do you know when they are ready to harvest? Are yours ready? Are they still in the pot because it’s better to store in the ground than in the cupboard?

  17. Wasnt expecting the high winds, just planted new plants and id also modified my greenhouse for airflow in hot weather. 🥴 Just a blimp in life , on the other side lots if rain ive watched my plants boost in growth.

  18. Oh dear Ivan , I live in North Cornwall and wind is my enemy , we get very little frost but if things aren’t properly staked they get flattened . I have used soft plastic netting fastened round pots with cable ties that has helped my large pots of potatoes in the past but generally they have usually survived and any broken stems tend to replenish themselves . So fingers crossed your plants will come through ok , I think bitter cold winds from the east do most damage. ❤️

  19. We have only just started to plant up our front drive & had same wind damage last yr as our drive is a wind tunnel. It even blow over a large heavy pot with courgette in & a runner bean pot with obelisk. Will be really interested what you plan on doing to prevent it happening to yr containers, as i'm at a loss on how to stop it blowing my pots over.

  20. Hopefully the majority will survive the wind damage Ivan. I was wracking my brains to think of something you could use as a temporary shield to just put the most vulnerable plants in for a very short space of time until the very high wind passes @ all I could thing of was one of those I stand pop up & pop down tents which come with tent pegs, that would definitely work but not sure if it would be acceptable to etect a temporary tent in your garden. Hopefully somebody will come up with a genius idea 🤔Annie
