#sponsored I’m teaming up with OSRAM Opto Semiconductors (@osramglobal) to test the efficiency of their horticultural LED lighting components.
.
1) A conventional setup with two 150W equivalent CFL bulbs (42W each)
.
2) Taking a reading at plant level, we get 225 foot-candles. This is good for steady growth of most tropical foliage plants
.
3) Switching to the LEDs (17W) – at first glance, they seem dimmer
.
4) But the light meter reads 350 foot-candles! Doing the math, in this particular case, the bulbs give us 2.67 foot-candles/W while the LEDs yield 20.6 foot-candles/W…they’re 10X more efficient!
.
5) As an engineer, I love creating testing rigs!
