and you mentioned morning and afternoon sun now am I right in thinking that if you have a border that gets the morning sun and you have a border that gets the afternoon sun that is a different kind of sun and shade oh yeah yeah Morning Sun is generally comparatively benign because the heat hasn’t started to build for the day and so forth but if you’ve got a border where the plants are in shade or morning and then suddenly get a blast of the afternoon sun the plants don’t get a chance to adapt so you know they’ve had this benign cool conditions for the morning and then suddenly you know it’s 38° C and the sun’s blasting straight in on them and so a different pallet of plants would probably be needed for a border like that right so if you’ve got a border that’s sunny in the afternoon what would you recommend the plants for that all right well I would suggest that you’re actually working then with a border that is more a sun border than a shade border so it would be more plants that you would buy from the nursery that are sun lovers that in fact don’t mind if they don’t get the whole day sun

This is a really interesting differentiation. My sunny/shady aspects have changed somewhat since the felling of my huge subsidence-inducing conifer. I really need to consider this now I’m planting up where it was. Thanks for this! 😃
I’ve got a good stretch that is shade all day but blasted with our high elevation late afternoon sun. I’ve tried plants that like more shade but I switching over to full sun. Crossing my fingers they are more successful! Great video! It has given me confidence that I’m on the right track.
I have an area with sandy soil, at the top of a retaining wall, that gets no sun until around lunchtime, then is blasted until nearly sunset. It's hard to get enough water to keep anything that likes sun alive, especially since we get far below freezing in the winter, so I'm limited to things that also can survive all that AND winter sunburn! So far creeping thyme and cultivar yarrow can take the brunt of it, with aquilegia and strawberries near the ends where the shade lasts a little longer and isn't as harsh in the winter.
Excellent question, excellent answer from Stephen!
Love his sense of style! Such a cool combo of jacket, shirt and glasses. He is a garden.
Wow, what insight. I couldn't have figured that out for myself! 🤦♂️
Excellent advice
