so today I wanted to review a new product that I found by Gardner Supply Company this is called their adjustable self-watering insert for pots and Planters and it’s basically just a accordion style a water holder and it comes with a couple different things and basically the cool thing about this is if you don’t want to DIY the option that it is an option that you can just purchase outright and this can fit into your raised beds or any of your pots and potentially make your watering chores easier so this is what you get with the kit you get this water reservoir and it has a little hole here and a little slit here and then at the top of all of these accordion style things there’s uh holes for the water to release so it doesn’t overflow I guess it’s an overflow option and then you get this tube here and this is adjustable so as you twist it it can make this taller and shorter and basically all this does is it inserts into the watering Reservoir and then this is where you would water from from the top so this part would reach over the level of your soil so it does have a pretty long wand here that you can extend this if you have a very tall raised bed planter or even if you have a shorter pot like this one you can make the adjustments so that it’s just above that soil level and then it also comes with a piece of capillary strip or capillary matte this is called and all you do is insert the one side of it into the slit here and you would just guide it through and get some of that slit into the water reservoir I would probably put a bit more of this in as much as I could to make sure that it’s touching the bottom of the container and probably going across a little bit too so I would just guide it in like that and then you want some of it to be outside of the container so that it’s touching the soil so this is basically a wick and it’s going to take the water that wants this Reservoir is filled with water it’s going to Wick that water out through this mat and it’s going to moisten the soil inside of your raised bed or your planter pot and then it also comes with um like kind of like a little straw and a little I don’t know it’s like a little rubber thing and you just put the rubber thing filled with air and you stick the straw into it and this is supposed to act as some kind of gauge so that you can tell if the reservoir is empty or full so what you would do is after you determined how tall you need this part to be you’d stick this in and you would cut it right at that level there so you’d use scissors and just cut this and then as you fill it with water this will rise to the top so you would see part of the straw sticking out from this here and once it gets level with this that’s how you would know that you need to fill your Reservoir with water again and it also comes with a little lid for this so that you could twist it so nothing gets down into your watering area I don’t know if that’s 100 necessary but it does come with it so you can have that too and this is basically how it works and the cool thing about this the reason that I got it is because it expands and contracts because of the way that it’s designed so at its full expansion let me see I just wrote all of these stats down so I have them for you it says it fits regular square and round containers for indoor and outdoor use and the reservoir is seven inches wide so that’s the width going this way this is seven inches from here to here okay and then it’s four and a half inches high so that’s this measurement here it’s four and a half High and then the length this part here can be adjusted it’s 15 it says 15.75 it’s about that it’s to me it looks a little less than than that maybe when the water is inside of it it’s a little bit wider so 15.75 inches is the longest length and then it says it can be compressed to eight inches so basically it would be you physically pushing this smaller I’m not sure about this part of it I actually thought when I bought this that these would click kind of click close so that it would be absolutely compressed and you could just set it to that size but um it’s it’s by force so I would actually have to hold it closed like that and then shove it into a pot or whatever so I just have a for this shoe box here and I wanted to show you the width of this here is it’s about eight and three quarter inches so it should be able to fit um this length here and let me just put this in and see if I can get it to fit into that size as I’m pushing this is kind of it’s it’s a little bit soft so it is kind of crushing that area but this side doesn’t seem to crush as easily so I think it would be okay as long as you have the capillary strip in already and then you would just smush it as much as you could and stick it into the Container so it does look like it would it would get as small as eight inches but you really have to hold it in place and if it’s a grow bag or something I think it’s going to bulge the edges like it’s doing with this right now and as you can see right here it’s starting to pop pop right out because it doesn’t actually click into place so once you get it in you might need a person to help you and you push it and then they hold the container for you and you’d have to jam it into the bottom like that so I think it would be a little bit better if it did actually click and compress as um as I thought it would but I think it will still work so I have this rounded container it says it will work in rounded Planters as well and in this planter the bottom is quite round so I just wanted to see if I could actually get it to fit into the bottom of this as well so I’m just gonna do the same type of thing and just kind of smash it in it does look like it will stay if I kind of hold it down if I put some soil underneath and then over top of this I think I would get it to stay in place and then I could adjust this area here so that this isn’t sticking out too far above the top level of where the soil would be so in this case because I can’t get it all the way to the bottom of my planter I would have just this little clear piece sticking out on the side but I think it would work for a planter of this size or anything just make sure you take a tape measure measure the bottom area of your planter right here it’s it’s spread out to about one foot right here I I could probably smoosh it a little bit more and get it in even further in here but I think this would be fine and it would do a fine job watering my plants in the situation so that’s a little bit how it works and it says here so if this is compressed completely and then you just pull it out here if this is compressed to that eight inches it would hold one and a half quarts of water in this Reservoir and if it’s completely expanded to the 15.75 inches like it looks now it actually holds five quarts of water so it holds quite a bit of water so I think it would really reduce the amount of water and you’d have to do in your containers the only thing that I would suggest that doesn’t really come with this setup is maybe using a piece of water permeable landscape fabric over the top I’m just thinking that as I put this into my raised bed planter when I fill it with dirt there’s holes in here and I think that the holes will all of the dirt will start falling into these holes so what I’m going to do is I’m going to cover this top so that the dirt doesn’t actually get into the water reservoir and the water can still come out if I overfill it or something like that and I’m just going to set it up in my raised bed planter and see how this works I have two of them because my planter is quite large so yeah I think two of them would hold 10 quarts of water and hopefully it’ll save me some time watering all of my vegetables this year okay so here are both of these situated inside of my raised bed planter this one I’ve already filled with water I’m going to fill this one up you can do this before or after you fill everything with soil I’m just going to do it now to make things easier for myself and this didn’t actually come with the product but because there are these perforations and holes on top here to let the water out what I’m using is a water permeable landscape fabric just a little piece that I cut off and I’m actually going to set this on top of the holes because I think as I fill this the dirt is going to go inside of these holes so I’m just going to set these on top and as I fill the dirt that’ll cover the holes and still let the water escape and so none of my potting mix will be falling into the holes of this watering chamber and then from there you would fill it with a little bit of soil and then take this capillary mat strip and put it on top of the soil so the capillary mat should sit a little bit above the water reservoir and it will Wick the water this one here you can see is already wet because there’s water already in here so you can see how this is actually wicking the water out and this would touch the soil and moisten the soil for you so I’m just going to fill this one up and then I’m going to fill this planter bed up with my potting mix and we’ll see how this works I have my hose set to Jet here because this is kind of a small opening I wish this opening was a little bit larger when I did my DIY self-watering planter I used a PVC pipe that was an inch and a half and it just made it a lot easier to water with this I feel like you have to be a little bit careful about getting the jet stream right into the tube but I’m going to fill this up and it should hold about like it said five quarts of water so between the two of these I’ll have 10 quarts of water that will slowly self-water my plants if I’m not paying too much attention to them which I’m really excited about I’m I’m hoping this is going to work really well and after about a week or so I’m gonna record Another Part of this video just to give you my thoughts on how this worked over the week and what I’m thinking about it so that you’ll have the full picture when I post this video so that’s all the way filled up and it’s starting to come out of the top of the reservoir so we’re good to go here and now I’m just going to speed up the video I’m going to fill it with some soil and we’ll put this capillary strip on top of the soil and then just plant on top I’m going to put this lid on here too so that I don’t get soil into these holes while I’m filling [Music] thank you okay so I’ve been using these self-watering containers for about three or four weeks now and I just wanted to give you some of the feedback that I think will help you if you decide to use these so I put two in this pretty large container I think that I could have probably used four of these self-watering components the reason for that is because it seems like the water drains out of the containers about once per day I actually have one container that stopped working it must have had a leak in it or something that I didn’t catch so before you actually install these into a big planter bed or something like that make sure that you do test them for a day or two just to make sure that the water is holding in that Reservoir and you don’t have to go through the trouble I’m going through now because in order to return the unit I would have to dig up my entire raised bed and lose all of my tomatoes and I don’t really want to do that so I’m not really sure how to to go about returning it or getting a replacement if I would have to actually remove everything from here so kind of going back and forth on that the other thing that I’ve noticed is that when you fill these areas up with the water it’s really difficult for me to tell if it’s actually full or not like how much water would actually fill this Reservoir up I think in the future it does come with this kind of stick thing and I think you would just have to mark it like before you installed this or come up with another way like timing out how long it takes you to fill that because I’ve just noticed that it’s really difficult for me to tell that it’s actually full and then I just kind of go by when the water starts draining out of the bottom of this and that’s how I kind of discovered the leak anyway so overall I think that these are an okay product they do seem to empty very quickly for me so I’m not sure if it’s because I don’t have enough of these in this container or if it’s some other reason just the wicking material or how quickly the water is wicking away so I’ll just be cognizant of that and then the other thing I would do is definitely add mulch I have a layer of mulch on the top of my raised bed and this is going to hold in the moisture better and if you’re not sure if your planter is getting enough water or not you can always use the knuckle test you go up to your second knuckle so go near a plant and then push some of the stuff away and then push down to your second knuckle on your pointer finger and then just wiggle the tip of your finger around that’s what I’m doing here and if you can feel that it’s moist but not it shouldn’t be soggy when you touch it it should just be moist down there and that’s how you know that there’s enough water getting to the roots of the plant so that’s it for this video and if you have questions leave them in the comments below and make
