I’m potting up a clearance fig, hoping I can save the plant. Also, lots of shade container gardening work on some ferns, coral bells or heuchera, astilbe bareroots, columbine, seedlings & more.

hey guys welcome back to tomatoes poppies and everything gardening today we’re going to work on some container planters that are on my back deck we’re going to work on a fig that I got on the clearance going to work on Ferns and other shade loving plants that are prenal and also a fairy Rose we’re going to repot so you can see this guy he looks really rough but I only paid maybe five six bucks for him do not like the color of the roots I wish it looked a little healthier I’m going to try to nurse it back to health but we will see I just reused a container that recently had a brussel in it that had bolted so I just took that out dug a ho put a little fruit tree fertilizer in there back filled a little bit put some more soil to tuck it in nice and firm um all around the edges and watered it in there is some time in the front there as well I think it’ll be okay but we’ll see and now we’re moving on to a project I have been procrastinating I have a I believe it’s an Autumn firm in the back there but it’s a perennial Fern it’s gotten huge it needs pruning you don’t always have to prune them but I am because it looks horrible um and there’s some other perennials in here we need to take care of so I got a new planter uh at Sam’s Club for 1999 drilled the holes in the bottom did my basic uh hugle culture method of just branches not branches but like sticks leaves all that good stuff I added just a wee bit of like a granular fertilizer that will break down over time these guys do not need a lot of fer fertilization so then I did put in some new potty mix and then the hard part was getting that huge root ball of the fern into the new pot I don’t normally like to ask for help but I actually did ask my husband to help me he did and that was the only way I would have gotten this huge heavy massive uh ball of soil and Roots into the new container I filled in all the gaps uh with some fresh potting mix and I want you to look at these Fern uh this is New Growth they feel really weird they look really weird but they’re so cool I think they’re so uniquely pretty um but this is New Growth for this year so I felt really comfortable to do a hard pruning on this Fern I don’t even think I pruned it last year at all and uh you look down there you can see all of these Little Seedling babies so I’ve got Corel babies got Coline babies in there and I’m going to take the time I’m going to dig them all out and save them because why not it’s free Plants I didn’t have to start them didn’t have to do anything I forgot to ask I did put in some of my native clay soil into this container as well this will help keep moisture into that soil also will help with the acidity all of these plants like acidic soil at this point I only have the fern and uh the Coline in this pop but that’s going to change because I’ve got a big hooka here I just pruned this guy last summer there’s a video uh you can find on my channel you want to watch that it’s beautiful again and full so I thought about dividing it again decided not to but there are a ton of little babies in there as well thought about dividing the fern I almost did it and then I’m like n let’s just wait another year um you can do that though these are perennials you can divide them and spread out your plants so then I had this persan Shield that was in my house it developed spiderm I kicked it outside when it was warm and it’s looking Fair it will look better soon I noticed in the last couple months it was just drinking the water I had to water every day indoors so I wanted to look at the roots so I popped it out and yes it is severely root bound there you go that’s root bound plant if you want an example so I’m just going to Shear off about probably 4 in of the root at the bottom repot it with just a wee bit of soil it’s going to be happy it’ll be able to live in that pot a little bit longer so then I decided okay I want some to still be here this is like a dwarf variety it only gets about 12 inches tall and I put three in there I’m really packing this planter uh to the max really and then I went and found some baby corbels to put in here as well I put three baby Corbell three is still be and then we’ve got one colbon and then we’ve got that huge Fern that technically could be two plants at this point and then I topped everything off with some mulchy type soil um that I had bought recently that will retain moisture here this is a moisture loving collection of plants and so I cleaned everything up and I I think it looks so much better and then it was time to prune up that Huka or Corel decided not to remove the babies because I would be standing there for probably an hour to pot up all those little babies I’m just going to let the strongest ones survive and if they don’t all make it that’s okay but some will um they do need light to germinate but you can see must have gotten some light because there are plenty of little babies there I may maybe in a week maybe if I get some free time I will try to pot them up I did up the ones from the fern though and then here is are what the HRA seed pods look like I did go sprinkle those over in my Woodland area and I’m just showing you more of the babies here um and then I have another container that has one corbel one geranium that’s perennial and then one baby Fern I found now that this job is complete let’s take that planter and go work on my fairy rose that needs a lot of help well not really a lot of help it just needs a new container a bigger container because it keeps drying out it keeps falling over when it’s a windy day because it’s getting light because it’s so dry so I tried to measure up where I wanted that planner but first I found uh a purple cone flower there so I had to relocate it I was able to add some granular slow relase fertilizer some new potty mix and now this rose has a bigger better home and I have an empty pot right there too so that’s great you can see Tonto was helping me here we are one week later you you can see that everybody looks pretty happy um the Persian shield was indoors for like I don’t know three nights in the garage formerly a house plant um put a little Coral Bell baby down in there with the um perennial geranium and the fern you can see the pollen covering the Hooka leaves and it looks like the Cor I transplanted in here did fine the atil be is putting on Leaf growth so it’s doing really great the ferns are getting bigger that’s going to be a new beautiful Fern Leaf it looks so ugly right now oh the colon skin right open isn’t that pretty I wonder what color that’ll be looks like it has some purple and let’s go take a peek at the Rose in the um bag so the Fig I mean it looked really rough when I bought it right you can see where they have taken multiple cuting off of this poor Plant over the years I think we’re going to give it a new home I feel like we adopted um a poor dog that was a breeder for like years and just living in a cage and now it gets to have its own life and be out have a good day good food poor thing look at it I think it’ll be okay though hopefully it’s got a lot of lot of old wow just look at all those cuting that have been taken all right let’s go look at the Rose I’m carrying my coffee with one hand and my hair is falling in my face and my glasses they’re they’re reader glasses so I can’t walk with them on and they fell down and I can’t can’t see there’s Tonto this morning laying on my area that I just weeded and planted those forget me kns and he’s crushing them and there we go you see the rose looks great let see a little bit of New Growth here I’ll put a picture from last summer this is a fairy Rose it’s just stunning and they get kind of wider than taller so it’ll kind of eventually Cascade down from that planter and I’m thinking in this pot I may save it and put banana mint um if I order that I have to place the order with this one company where I got all that mint last year I think it was colonial Creek um I really want to try the banana mint look at tono smell on the uh arugula flowers so I may I may save that spot for that because Rose and Men Are Great companions but they don’t need to be in the same pot together because they will compete with the resources so I think that looks really nice I think as we’re coming up the walkway here you can see um my forget me knots are blooming I need to get some pictures of those before they’re done which is really soon anyways you’re walking up the walkway then you’re going to see that gorgeous fairy Rose kind of cascading all all over the place with beautiful pink flowers now I know I said I don’t like to plant roses with mint but I did make an exception here this is my blue girl Rose let’s see if we see any buds anywhere not yet but lots of leaf growth and down in there I have a real petite mint called strawberry mint and it does kind of smell like strawberries all right guys that’s going to do it for this video hope you enjoyed it and hope you’re having a great gardening week and I will talk to you soon bye
