If you fail to plan you plan to fail. Edible gardening gets a little easier when you consider these key things.

yeah it is definitely
Springtime what’s up wild people welcome
back to my channel if you’re new I’m
Alexandria Denise culturally or as a
society gardening is seen as a
springtime activity which is why around
this time of year you have an increased
amount of people asking how to start a
garden well if you’re one of those
people then you might want to stay
grounded to this video because I’m going
to share with you a few tips on how to
lay out your garden game plan we got a
lot of ground to cover so so let’s get
digging my fuzzy caterpillar now in this
video I’m mainly referring to edible
gardening but this can apply to
Landscaping as well uh I kind of had a
hard time laying this out in
chronological order or order of
importance but I figured if you’re
looking to start a garden you nine times
out of 10 want to eat what’s in that
Garden so let’s start there first things
first you want to list out the fruits
and vegetables you actually like to eat
and focus on learning something about
them and when learning something about
these fruits and vegetables you want to
keep these things in mind how much
sunlight and water is required a day
what type of soil it thrives in best is
it a warm or cold weather plant what
other plants can it be companioned with
and how much space is required and what
climate it grows in best which I will
talk about soon now I could just list
off a bunch of fail proof plants to
plants just so you can gain the
confidence and a green thumb but I feel
like like it’ll be a little more
motivating and you’ll be a little more
determined to stick with it if you grow
stuff that you actually like and don’t
worry about making the list too long
because as we go along in this video you
might be eliminating some so tip number
two learn your climate and growing
zones I had to say that one slowly
because a rattles snake is no more
comfortable than Arctic than a polar
bear is in Texas and what I mean by that
is that everything has a specific
climate or environment or conditions in
which it has to grow and plants are no
different so not knowing this can
definitely kill your confidence as a new
Gardener if not the plants because you
never set yourself up to succeed to
begin with so the USDA along with other
universities as well as weather
authorities has divided our continent up
into zones ranked from coldest to
warmest of the lowest average winter
temperatures for that climate and this
is usually about 5 to 10° of an iner but
uh they’ recently changed the zone map I
here it didn’t change a whole lot I
definitely going to link that down below
and what this does is tell gardeners um
the types of perennials or variety of
plant that’s best suited for their
climate the way you can find this is
that you go on to the website you just
type in your ZIP code C at the top and
it’ll definitely pinpoint where you are
not including so much as microclimates
though so that’s something that you just
have to go through a little bit more of
trial and error or check out your
specific County for but there are plants
that can do well in nearly every climate
such as my blueberries here so these
back here uh I don’t know if you can see
it one right here it’s a southern high
this one is actually a southern high
O’Neal and the other ones over here is a
tiff in blue so I did another video on
my um blueberries but these as the name
implies are best suited for a lot of the
Southern climates or warmer climates
whereas you have the Northern High Bush
or the rabbit eye and several other
varieties of uh blueberries that can
grow in different
climates so then you sometimes have
varieties of those varieties or how can
I say like those that I don’t know if
that was the right way to say it but
basically Al uh you have plants that
Blossom or bear fruits at different
times of the season so some even if it
uh is suited for this climate right here
it might blossom in the early season
some mid and others late so that way if
you have a long growing season such as
myself here in Georgia then you can bear
fruit on your trees or plants throughout
the uh growing season but if your region
in general doesn’t support a plant so
say like you live in Maine and you have
coconuts on your list well you you might
want to scratch that off tip number
three and um this one I is it varies so
much that I’m going to tackle it the
best I can but that is getting to know
your growing space so this one varies
greatly because it really just depends
on who you are and what your setup in
your situation is but one thing I can go
ahead and clarify is that your growing
space
is not just so much limited to square
footage but how much sunlight that
square footage receives throughout the
day obviously somebody that’s in an
established home will have a lot more
rain than say somebody that’s in an
apartment or a condo highrise in the
city somewhere with no yard space that’s
another reason why I had you list out in
the beginning uh what plants can
companion with whatever plant that you
want to plant best because that’s one
way that you can maximize your space and
get the most out of your growing process
okay so taking a look at my 2024 Garden
game plan what I’m planting and how to
companion them I’ve divided this up into
warm season as well as cold season crops
as you can see I have my list here and
kind of this kindergarten thing going on
to where I am um drawing a line to what
they can companion with best I also have
my coal season down here I don’t have
much for the coal season going on
because I’ll be well into hunting season
by then but also my herbs uh what I Can
companion them with during this season
during the long season right here so
that’s just something that I planned
here but what I really want to show you
is the garden blueprints so down here I
have the layout of the
garden and where I can plant where I
have the most rain this is the patio
area where I am currently filming this
now I have my little door and of course
the onions lettuce Swiss chard aruga
spinach all in this bin as well as some
strawberries down this way I’m going to
keep those in the shade to um retain
moisture and the worm compost now this
area right here from like Dawn to maybe
like 12: p.m. or 12: noon receives um
roughly about 6 to 7 hours of Sun I’d
say more like 5 hours of true sunlight
uh full on but definitely from the crack
of dawn on up until like noon I am
getting some pretty good sunlight in
this area and the rest of the day is
pretty shady which is great for some of
my lettuce even if lettuce uh is more of
a cold season it can be grown in the uh
summertime if you just choose the right
variety this area here is kind of tricky
because it can also receive the same
amount of sunlight as this here in the
early morning but it also receiv
receives some of this evening sunlight
somewhere around 300 p.m. now right now
as of 1:00 p.m. going on to as I’m
recording this here the sun is kind of
behind us so this area’s got a little
bit of shade this area here uh is
already all like all the way in the
shade but there is some sunlight still
peeking the edge here so the sun is
moving East and it’s going to come back
around over to the west to meet this
side now this side here it does get some
good morning sun maybe I’d say about 4
hours of the morning sun before some of
it become shaded when the sun start
moving this way uh clockwise so I say it
got like 4 hours of Morning Sun before
half of its in the shade
[Music]
and Morning
Sun but it’s in the shade until roughly
about 3 p.m. but from 3:00 p.m. on up to
dusk When the Sun Goes
Down um it’s getting maybe a good
another good 6 to 7 hours of Sun so I
estimate this uh roughly
about say
nine or I’d say more like eight
to 10 hours of Sun a
day and this is where I plan to plant
the three sisters which is the corn
beans and squash my blueberries have
been on this side for years and I had my
strawberries in this cage before I
expanded my blueberries so that’s why I
mov my strawberries more so over
here and I plan to plant some muscadines
along the like one or two two muskin
along the side here so it can grow along
the fence but we’ll just see how that
works out and as far as like the three
sisters go uh we’re going to see how
that goes too but I know the zucchini is
definitely going to need some Branch out
room so we’ll just I’ll just figure that
out as I go but yeah this is how I’ve
laid out my garden game plan oh in this
area like I said I’d say in total about
8 hours of
sunim but yeah this is how I’ve laid out
my garden game plan for the 2024 Garden
season last but not least which would
probably be first on a lot of people’s
list is the budget now I myself I’m a
resourceful person and all of the things
that I have right now I started
literally with little to nothing it came
from just doing a little bit of research
having a little bit of
creativity and yeah um I I wouldn’t
exactly call it dump diving but I mean I
found some things that was one man’s
trash became my treasure I found flower
pots on the side of the road I’ve gone
to hardware stores to ask for their
scrap wood if they’re going to throw it
out anyway I just take and I build
something out of it and I built um this
garden bed the other garden bed even
that uh cage over there for my
blueberries to keep the birds out the
only thing I bought for that was the
chicken wire um in the nails or now I
put it with screws as far as soil even I
have a video on how to make lone soil so
I want you guys to check that out as
well I know I’m just throwing all the
videos at
you but you know it’s good stuff it’s
good stuff because I really don’t think
that you have to spend a whole lot of
money on these things plants aren’t
exactly picky you know where they grow
well some plants are those the bougie
plants but for the most part in What I
have experienced uh just give them good
soil um you know good soil sunlight
water fertilize them uh do what you need
to do with pruning so on and they’re
happy cuz honestly I have seen plants
grow in just about anything like tires
bathtubs
shoes uh you name it like some of those
things I would personally not do and
recommend but if the shoe fit fits I was
going to do my worm compost like that I
did see a bin over there that somebody
was throwing out but it I think it had
lot a large crack in the bottom or
something other and I was like yeah I’ll
just you know go and get a fresh one but
yeah it’s all about being resourceful
and that’s what I try to make this
Channel about because it doesn’t take a
whole lot of money but budget is not so
scary but if I could choose the most
important thing on the list it would be
number two and when that video comes out
I will link it to the end but other than
that guys gardening is so therapeutic
and if you haven’t started like
