We went 3 months without buying groceries from the grocery store and used up food we preserved from the summer, homestead pantry staples, and what we had in the garden. Pushing ourselves to do something uncomfortable led to a lot of exciting results! We were doing this for the pantry challenge hosted by Jessica @threerivershomestead

Wonderful well done and it’s inspired me to give it a try
Thanks for sharing what you do,. I am a gardener as well with 12 raised beds in the suburbs but I do not grown to the extent you do. You have a lovely family & I love hearing your methods of planting & cooking what you grow.
Hi Becky! I really enjoy your videos. Although we live completely different lives (i'm Australia/vegan/child-free/atheist) I really respect the life you lead. I love how low waste you're family is. You've inspired me to acknowledge areas in my own life where I can become a little more self sufficient 🙂
I don't think three months is long enough. There's a guy out there that if he gets elected might spin us into a civil war. Between people who believe in freedom and those who want to serve in a dictatorship. I know what your thinking, that could never happen, and god I hope that's true. But if you had to survive for a year or more because markets just didn't have the food to support a broken supply line…..could you?
Beautiful beautiful family!
Never thought to grate my smaller potaoes 🥔. Thanks for that tip!!
Thanks for your great videos! Gos bless!
Love your channel, thanks Becky. Is your spelt bread recipe the same as your wholewheat?
Well as a mum and wife it must give you a great feeling having made 3 quiches to many but they also disappear by the next afternoon, especially when you consider that a lot of kids would be snacking on chips and chocolate that would be destroying there health, having a piece of quiche and a fruit piece would always be healthier option than say chips or chocolate.
have you ever tried goats or ewes milk as a dairy replacement. I’m not sure that all these nut milks are environmentally beneficial for the environment.
Also great news about your boy wanting to make his own food and his own videos. It must also make you proud being able to show him little hacks you’ve learnt over the years to help him avoid issues when cooking.
I got one of those pasta machines from Christmas and haven’t been able to get the consistency right to successfully extrude the dough. Would you consider sharing your recipe!
Do y'all partner with Birch, and have a discount code?
Wow, that is the largest sweet potato I have ever seen! @8:26. May I ask, what did you do to get it that large?🤔🤔🤔
Have a blessed day 🙏🏾
Love your channel so inspiring!
What is the brand and model of your oven? 🙂
???WHAT TYPE of green beans do you grow???
Great video. Great family and doing it right!
I ran across a video of y’alls from three years ago and wanted to post my response also here..
“Over the last century the promise of easy, cheap and fast industrial foods errased the age old art of preserving. While cheap and fast food seem a good thing to so many we now see all the health problems that have followed the industrialization of the food we eat.”
Truer words concerning food never spoken. Altough we are seeing now that even fast food is becoming very expensive.
I am in the medical field now for 35 yrs. Mainly ICU. I asked a physician once…
“What is the number one cause of the critically ill?”
Without hesitation he replied…
“95% of the issues come from what people consume through their mouths. The issues start in the gut.”
After studying this for awhile I believe statistics prove that doctor correct.
Good for you and your husband for taking this less traveled road, both for yourselves and your childrens health and future. They will have their mom and dad around for many more years by this decision and they will be healthier to enjoy life also. Plus folks that do what you are doing, just as our great grandparents did, get plenty of exercise.
Bravo. Much encouragement.
This was a helpful video. 😊. Freeze drying cheese & yogurt works really well so that may be some thing you might want to try for the next pantry challenge. Would you please consider supplying your recipe for your marinara sauce ?
You guys are à such a inspiration! We started are homestead 7 years ago with no idea we’re this would lead us and you motivate me to always grow more and make more with it! Thank you for sharing with us!
Love your videos! So inspirational! Great job!
😂 i thought that sweet potato was a large chicken 😮
Needed the firewood kindling cracker for that sweet potato
that sweet potato though! Omg!!
You are right… Most foods coming out of the grocery stores are not healthy. It's good to see you be able to feed your family direct from your pantry.
I have started cooking/baking from scratch much more than usual, what I have found is that the amount of time it takes to do this is way more than people realize. I have a long way to go but hey.. Gotta start somewhere!!
Much respect for your accomplishment of no grocery store for 3 months!
Your channel is so inspiring, so encouraging. I love how family oriented and informative it is. Thank you for this video. ❤️
I have watched your family for years and it is SO inspiring. #goals
Guurrl! That sweet potato is massive!! Proof of your soil health right there.
I too have some large sweet potatoes.
That Sweet Potato 🤨
everything looked great
I'm about 2.5 months into making milk kefir. Do you know if kefir might be much easier for you to digest inasmuch as the probiotics actually feed on lactose? I wondered when you said you subbed sour cream. My kefir makes the best probiotic rich sour cream, cream cheese and I've even made hard cheese by pressing the solids. It has the most concentrated colony of bacteria of any ferments and is far easier to make than even yogurt. Just wondering if you've ever considered it.
You’ll never have a very healthy soil without animal manure
Respectfully: no dairy need but you listed off yogurt, different types of cheeses, and sour cream. Do you use goat milk as an option?
Deep South Homestead has a potato slicer that Danny made, much like an old paper cutter – for this very reason. Sweet potatoes are too large many times to cut conveniently and especially when you’re preserving a bunch at one time. Place the potatoes on the cutting board and slice with the machete. Your hubby can build one for you! 😉 Great video.
A very Lovely video!❗ It warms my Heart to see your Family all participating in your garden, food prep for meals, etc. My little Diggs is growing❗ Such a Lovely Family~~💗💚💛💙
You are a role model! One day, I plan to be baking my own breads, gardening, and canning my own food to be more self sufficient.
omg that sweet potato!
just as a tip, if you find an organic farmer, you could buy wheat and spelt in bulk. It can be stored keeping its nutrients up to 2 years and then grind it freshly to your required grain. For sifting I use a non stick foil sheet (one of these permanent baking foils … not the silicon ones) on the counter. Baking paper will do the same thing. It gives you more movement for sifting than doing it over a bowl and goes a lot quicker – just stay closely over the sheet and you will have less dust. Once finished you can just lift the sheet up and then you can let your sifted flour slide into your bowl.
When baking bread loaves I often make the dough in the evening but with only 10% of the yeast. I cover the bowl so the dough won’t dry out and leave it in the fridge over night. It will rise quite a bit. I shape the loaves or buns next morning and bake them. They will stay moist for longer and have a nice taste as the dough has time to develop flavor over night. It often is also just more convenient timing for me as baking bread in the evening just drags out the hours waiting for the dough to prove. I always use fresh yeast as it works better for me. I portion it in cubes and keep those in the freezer, so I always have yeast available.
8:35 that sweet potato is comically huge 😂
The last few minutes of this video are beautiful. So glad your family is thriving!!
Thanks for your videos. I have noticed pictures with your one son missing? I hope he is OK? God bless!
Thanks for the warning in Other Information about the onion chopped. I had purchased a different one at Aldi that was worthless. It chopped nothing. I have been hesitant to buy another for fear I will just be wasting money.
Amazing and so inspiring. Thank you for sharing.
You made me chuckle as you attempted to cut your 9 lb sweet potato. I have pulled out my hammer with the chef knife to hit the smaller tip of knife to get through the squash or cabbage or sweet potatoes. Haha
Love your sweet potato fries!!
We have breakfast for dinner when I have forgotten to thaw something out for dinner. I have no problem with breakfast for dinner. It's food.
I agree with junk in grocery items causing cancer, heart, organ failure. I open up grocery flyers, find around 2 to 4 items or no items. Making food from scratch is best ❤. Love what you are doing n teaching us. 😊
sporry , I 'm confused , you 're lacto intolerant , but you can eat sour cream , cheese, and yogurt ? I don t mean to be sarcastic or anything I just really don , t understan 😯
