Spring is fast approaching while there may be a few weeks of winter left in central Maine. Getting the homestead garden ready for maximum food production. Lots of canning planned.

Guys appreciate you stopping by so here in Central Maine uh we’ve had a few warm days and uh it’s kind of motivated a lot of people start thinking about spring gardening yard work all that stuff uh but the re harsh reality is we’re still uh at the beginning of March and there
Can still be a lot of winter left I mean next week we could get a foot of snow there’s no telling but uh as you can see all the snow has melted and uh I thought I’d share our garden area and kind of some things we plan on doing on the homestead
Uh for those that may be new to the channel or haven’t seen some of the older videos um main prepper girl um and I came to Maine uh about a year ago in February 2023 uh we purchased uh this cabin uh this on 5
Acres and there is a ton of work to do there’s so much to do to create a homestead where we can be as self-reliant and as self-sufficient as possible and we have a great sense of urgency we’re really feeling that by the end of this
Year we want to be as far as possible and that doesn’t mean 100% that means as far as we can get and then we’ll keep working on it uh if God allows so what I was going to talk about right now is gardening uh so we did have a
Garden uh last year in 2023 uh and it did not go real well expectations were not real high uh I’m used to guarding in South Carol Carina and Maine is completely different The Season’s different and of course we’re not used to this soil we don’t know what it’s
Going to provide what it’s going to need and so we’re adapting and we’re learning a lot so I’ll just show you as you could see here uh these are blueberry bushes that we put in and they did fantastic uh we bought them put them in the ground and
They just exploded with blueberries uh that was probably the highlight of our food production really really good and uh and by the way this is not going to be a super detailed overview I’m just kind of sharing what our plans are but um we’ve got a a garage over here and this
Area is I don’t know what the size is but that’s where we are we planted vegetables and uh really did not do real well so we did get some zucchinis a little bit of yellow squash uh cucumbers just didn’t work out a lot of tomatoes I will I will say that’s the
Best production of tomatoes that I personally have ever had now I hate Tomatoes but I like tomato sauce I like salsa so we did a lot uh with that and we also as you can see we got a compost bin and I plan on adding at least one
More and I really want to get a tumbling one uh I made one several years ago and I may do that again um a tumbling compost bin just works to me so much better than just a stationary one so some things we’re doing different this year as you could see we’ve got some
Raised beds that we made out of of wood and we are actually going to put in galvanized I don’t know troughs I don’t know a better word it’s a galvanized rais bed they’re going to last a super long time and we’re going to do a little better job controlling our soil with
These raised beds so we’ve already gotten some smaller ones that are like uh 4T long 2 ft wide and a and a foot tall and we have some 6t and some 8f Footers and the 8f Footers are like 8×4 and the six-footers I think are 6
By3 and we’re going to get an assortment to put around here in the garden uh we will have some inground there’s actually a spot right there that we’ve already planted garlic and there’s a raised bed back there we put Garlic in uh and we planted that in
October because up here in in the in the fridge in North that’s something you put in the ground uh in in the fall so uh we have some strawberries we’re going to see if they come back I know strawberries they grow like weeds and they’ll multiply so we’ll see how that
Goes uh we’re going to have a variety of raised beds in other areas that will have herbs uh strawberries and I’ll share some of that uh in the future so uh we’re really excited this year to to really see an improvement in our food production but we’ll see what happens uh
The we’re getting ready to start some seeds indoors uh again this is uh March 9th and uh and again I’m using some references from local universities of what to plant and when and uh those seeds uh will get started probably tomorrow so that’s it little tour little
Uh ideas of what we’re doing oh by the way this right here is a giant pile of composted cow manure that we received today uh found it locally was aged uh somewhere around 5 years and the guy I was only going to get three yards the
Guy brought it out and he said look I’d really like to empty my truck I’ll give you a heck of a deal and he gave me a heck of a deal so I got eight yards and uh that’s going to go a long way I think in our food production and providing the
Nutrients that that uh these plants need to really really flourish so we’ll see how it goes all right guys I appreciate you stopping by Smash that like button subscribe if you haven’t it it would mean a lot to me and stay safe take care we’ll see you next Time

There is another You Tuber that homesteads in Maine. She might provide some insight on planting there. https://www.youtube.com/@HomesteadCorner
Good luck with your garden
Each planting season is a learning experience. Learn from the successes and failures, both are just feedback to use in tweaking your gardening skills. Good luck!
It’s all learning in the garden , good luck 🤞
Hey John, do you know if there might be a hazard of the galvanization leeching into the soil?
I don't know if it will but I'd check on it before you got too far into the project.
