Is a good time of the year for us to get our seeds in order it’s time to go through our seeds to see what we have and what we need to reorder as we know every seed packet should have date stamped on it that date has nothing to
Do with the expiration of those seeds it simply means the year in which those seeds were packaged for if we keep our seeds in a dry cool environment those seeds has the potential to last for many years even though the temperatures is really getting warm in some areas in the
US we still need to be on guard in case we have some unexpected coal frints to come through so we need to be prepared to cover our tender plants should this happen now depending on what you have planted already in your garden and what the weather may be if the buds have not
Formed yet there may not be any reason to cover those plants if you ever want to cover your plants with sheeting of plastic or tarps that’s okay as long as that plastic is not actually touching the plants because when the cold weather moves in that plastic touching the
Plants can actually cause the plants to be damaged versus protecting it to avoid disrupting your perennials Bloom cycle try to divide and Transplant them opposite of their Bloom cycle meaning if your perennials usually bloom in the fall then wait until Springtime to divide in transplant if they bloom in the
Springtime wait until the fall until you divide in transplant the spring time is a really good time to work in some really good age compost and also some or organic slow release fertilizer within the first couple inches of your soil it is recommended about every 3 to 5 years
To have your soil tested for the nutrients that it contains are missing and then to amend your soil according to what the results come back as this is a good time to get those gardening tools out to clean them up and to wipe them down and sharpen them and get them ready
To be used in our Gardens is there any gardening tools that you wish you had last year that you didn’t get around to purchase maybe this is a good time to make that order so you can have it ready when you need it in your garden and also if you
Have pretty shears that you have used you might want to think about wiping it down with some alcohol to kill any kind of pathogens that may be on those shears compost we just got to make some more if you have never made compost now is a
Good time to think about how you would like to make your compost bin and get those materials ready your Browns and your greens to start your compost pal compost is one of the best things that you can do for your garden to mend the soil every Gardener needs at least a
Couple of sunflowers not only do they look spectacular in the garden but also they serve as a host plant they attract predatory wasp which helps keep the garden pest under control and they attract beneficial beads it’s important for us to know what type of soil we really have basically they’re three
Different types of soil clay sand or lone if you have clay soil those particles are so small that sometimes a microscope cannot even pick up all the small particles within clay soil and clay soil absorbs the water very slowly but once it’s absorbed it hangs on to it
Tightly and it’s very hard for air to get through so obviously clay soil needs to be amended and compost is a great way to start amending clay soil and there you have sandy soil this is what I have here in Florida the sandy soil the particles are much larger than the clay
So the water and the nutrients they just wash right through that sand and a lot of it is just wasted so obviously sandy soil too will be greatly improved by amending it with compost LOM this is a type of soil that we’re after LOM is somewhere between
These two extremes of clay and sand LOM does have Clay it does have sand and also some other ingredients but it has a good supply of decomposed organic material called humus the grains of the LOM have good structure the soil is going to drain well it will retain
Enough water for plants to grow and air can circulate and the soil will provide plenty of room for roots to grow easily as well but if you don’t have lomy soil compost is the way to go we just got to make some more full of beneficial microbes and
Nutrients making your own compost is extremely coste effective if you have ways to collect Autumn Leaves during the fall and the winter months and then collecting your um scraps from your kitchen and also your garden scraps that’s all you need is a carbon and nitrogen both together to make a
Beautiful lomy Rich compost compost does have a NPK ratio to it it’s going to vary from pal to Pal depending on all the things that went into that compost pal the compost acts like a slow relasing fertilizer the pH of compost is neutral around seven so whether our
Soils are acidic or whether they’re alkaline it has a balancing effect on the soil’s pH resulting in our plants being healthier and more thriving it helps our soil to retain better air moisture and nutrients it improves the quality of our soil there are so many ways in which compost helps our
Garden I started this compost December of last year around the middle of the month this is now March this is a hot compost pal and so it took approximately 3 months from start to finish uh on this compost pal here now I was faithful to
Come out here and to turn the pal and to put water on it to make sure it it had moisture and also there was times where I had to feed it a little bit more nitrogen because it was cooling down too much so as you can see here it is now

Thanks for the great gardening tips we’ve got to make some compost
Hey Annette great information. Thanks so much. I had clay soil in the former home I lived it. It was extremely hard to grow root vegetables in it. I used cotton Burr compost in it and after a couple years it turned over like butter. Compost is a wonderful thing.
