Really cold this morning something we need to be thinking about  in about a week’s time because according to it   weather those minus temperatures are on the way  back and in our area minus one possibly minus two

So keep that fleece handy you’re going to need it  we’re not growing much or anything at the moment   because obviously with light levels combined with  that constant cold temperature seeds find it very   difficult to germinate unless you’re doing them  indoors and we’ve got Peppers indoors at the

Moment and onions and they’re actually doing all  right we’ve now got a bit of size of those Peppers   they’re not huge but they have now started to  get the first true Leaf which is a really good

Sign somebody asked me about grow lights as well  indoors and they was asking if I have the grow   lights and the heat Mar on 24/7 and I don’t the  eat mat does stay on 24/7 because it needs that

Consistent warmth to help the se’s Germany and  to get them start growing but as regards light   I usually give them 10 to 12 hours a day cuz the  plants still need some rest time just like we do

You don’t want to leave lights over your plants  24 hours a day in the long run that’s going to do   more arm than good just notice these broad beans  I keep keep forgetting that I’ve got this lid over

At top which we definitely need because of slugs  but now it’s actually started to lift that lid up   because these plants are getting a bit more size  on them but the only problem leaving that lid over

At top is that condensation is then constantly on  your leaves and they might start to yell so far so   good so we’ll leave that with lid off today just  out those tops dry out a little bit but at least

We’ve got some something worth looking at when we  come out on a Monday morning something is working   not much or anything else the sweet peas are  pretty much same size as they were but there’s

No damage to it so that’s a good thing onions very  slow don’t expect miracles at this time of year   that’s all I can say I’ve not come out to actually  sew any seeds today it’s that time of year where

I start wi around garden and collecting up any  contain containers ones that we used last year   that might still have compost in because we can  reuse that compost we’re not going to be growing a

Lot of stuff at this time of year so we only need  small amounts of compost so to save a little bit   of money you might as well get all your containers  that might still have some in from last year and

Amend that compost because what we’re going to  be doing is just starting off a few seedlings cuz   it’s very early in year yet to dou mature anything  anything so you’re only going to be filling trays   like that these are 12 separate plants and  obviously they don’t take a lot of compost so

There’s no need to go rushing out and buying five  or six big bags of compost if you’re lucky enough   to have places close to you that actually have it  at this time of year which can be another problem

A lot of shops don’t stop the gardening stuff  until after Valentine’s Day at least not around a   anyway so unless you go to a big Garden Center you  can’t really get compost so just to get us started

Off in early January it’s time to start saving  some compost adding some fertilizer to it to   amend it and then we’ve got something to work with  over the next couple of weeks by which time it’ll

Be February and we can start and get some fresh  stuff as well but first I need to gr garden and   see what containers I’ve got with stuff in that I  could use well I’ve collected one or two but to be

Fair it’s really cold on hands today I found this  in Garden it shows you how cold it is out there today things are starting to ice up and it’s not even in minus temperatures  at the moment but anyway we got quite a few

Containers together some that’s still got plants  in they’re not looking very good they’re not too   bad but they’re not in a condition where I would  eat them that’s Lamb’s lettuce I think it’s gone

Past its best so we’ll see what we can get from  that and we’ve got a couple of baskets this one   is what’s left last year’s cherry tomato plants  that we put in little baskets it’s got a little

Tomato still attached but obviously that’s  not going to be any good so we just need to   get that plant out shake away that compost and  we’ve got the start for something that we can   reuse a really good idea to do is to colleck  your tubs up in advance and put them in your

Green house to dry out which I forgot to do and  we’ve had quite a lot of rain so when you come   to save that compost it’s just going to make it  that much more difficult but if you haven’t got

A greenhouse pop them in your shed put them  in a shelter if you’ve got a bit of a shelter   anywhere or just throw a tarp over at top of  them just give them chance to dry out it’s

Going to make that job so much easier we’ve  only got one in here at the moment which is   this one and you can see that’s nice and dry so  we’ve got a bit of some to start us off with at

Least meanwhile all these other containers they’ll  stay in here for quite a few days maybe a week and   then we’ll do same with those as well it’s  amazing just how much mess your Greenhouse   gets in when you’re barely using it for a few  months so this stuff probably going to be too

Wet for us to SI at the moment and I have got  a si in here somewhere buried I’ll find it just   trying to get me set organized I need me bench  to work on looking forward to using these again

You’ll remember those all those little Caravan  wash bowls that I got I think I got about 15 on   them I bought a bol lot of them so they only  cost a few pents each which is brilliant and

We’ve been using those all the way through summer  and we’ve had some really good results and it also   raised quite a lot of interest to people as well  a lady was asking me quite recently about starting

Off gardening and what tools do you need to have  and I think that first off a good C you’re always   going to want one of those that was originally  from World Coast for about3 but wi Co is gone

Now but I’m pretty sure you can get them from  Amazon or other places but definitely you need   a save plenty of trays if you buy flowers at any  point they coming trays like that and I save them

You can replant all your stuff in it for nothing  trays like this for bottom watering your plants   you got to have them definitely one of these  these were really cheap in will coat when I   bought here it was £750 and then when these  prices started to increase they put these up

To £15 each which is ridiculous but if you can get  a smaller version of one of these it’s just a pump sprayer you just give it a pump and then you can  spray all your plants they got those really good

Long reaches on them so you can get in between  plants if they’re all together we are spraying   all leaves on outside which is definitely  something so definitely one of those and   also a little travel cuz you can just preate your  holes and then push your plants in straight after

A pot without disturbing them too much and  again they’re quite cheap a decent pair of   Cutters always comes in handy a watering can  and if you’re doing things outside obviously   a hoe shovel a spade and a rake the basic  things that you’re going to need but if you’re

Doing container gardening you don’t need none of  those you just need the things that I’ve already   mentioned and always make sure you’ve got a couple  of different water bottles as well so you can put   different things in them like your tomato feed  and you add some salt that you’ve diluted things

Like that and then label them she’ll forget but  that’s a few things that I find really useful   one good tip is if you don’t want to buy a Sie  then go to your market and see if they’ve got

Any of those Lots at Market stores have these  mushroom boxes and of course the Fuller holes   they’re perfect they’ll do it same job as that  cuz if you look at the size of these holes so

Basically the same so if you’re near a market go  and grab one of these and obviously you can get   more in one of these than you can then so that’s  always good to know so basically it’s just a case

Of me doing this now this long container I’ve  got here holds quite a lot of compost and it’s   been used three times last year so now it’ll have  no nutrients in it whatsoever but we can soon fix

That or maybe a little shovel as well so  you don’t have to do this that’ll be a good idea so I’m just trying that that free one  today why not so just giving it a bit of a

Shake to get that loose compost through and leave  all those stones and Roots behind that we don’t want two second job and all the weeds are still  in there another thing that’d be good to have is   something like this a nice big size container to  put your compost in preferably deeper than this

I always left one of those big clear plastic  ones but I broke that I am getting another one   quite soon CU then you can C all your compost  in one go add what you want to it like feed or

Vermiculite and it’s ready prepared as soon as  you want to start sewing some seeds but for the   sake of two seconds with that old compost we’ve  got that now there’s a couple of bits in it but

You’re going to get that it’s not going to be  perfect unless you SI has got smaller holes   but that was just using that free one and  to be fair that’s not a bad result at all   so what we’ve got in there is probably enough  compost to fill up about four of those trays

That I shown you earlier which is around 48  plants in total so that’s a very good style   for three but before we get round to using it we  want to add some feed to it this has got a bit

Damp but we’ll some sort it out we just break it  up by hand and then I’ll just add a couple or R full and then we’ll just mix all that compost up and when you do this this compost is  probably going to have more nutrition in

It than some new stuff that you can buy  especially if you buy the cheap stuff so   there we go nearly a full tray of old  amended compost and I’ve got some of   these as well that still got compost in them  these were containers from panop let’s try my

Own SAR that one works perfectly fine though  again this one is quite wet we’ll see how it goes at least by doing this we can get the  majority sved and then what’s left will’ll   pop to one side and then it’s going to dry out  that bit quicker but we did get something from

That and now we’ve got some really nice looking  compost that’s already full of nutrition ready   for when we start sewing those seeds in a  week or so and I say a week or so because   I know that there’s not much point in sewing  seeds into your cells Outdoors even in your

Green houses when you’ve got minus temperatures  on way because those little cells are going to   have moisture in them so that little bit the  compost is going to freeze solid as well as   the seeds that you’ve put in so for the moment  this is what I’m concentrating on collecting

Containers reusing old compost after we’ve  sved it and then added some more fertilizer   so there’s plenty of nutrition in there ready  for spring if you want to see what we’re doing   on that lead up to Spring please hit that  subscribe button press that notifications

Bell and I’ll see you next time I think I  need to get some cough medicine take care
