As requested: a closer look at the growing strategy of my friend’s monstera. The vine is supported by a ceiling mounted plastic chain, which keeps the monstera leaves happily photosynthesizing below the west-facing skylight. It’s hard to see but the leaves are actually riddled with scale – an infestation my friend has been managing/fighting for the past few years. Aerial roots do not need to be anchored to a moss pole or tree for the plant to grow well – light (as always) is the determining factor.
.
📷 2) The vine is rooted in a pot of soil, about 16″ in diameter, that rests on a table on the stair landing. A second vine is growing from the pot.
.
📷 3) This was the plant one year ago, when I first visited. The bungee cord was hanging by a thread so it’s a good thing he replaced it with the plastic chain.
