Ah I killed another plant hey handyman Dan here with you can build this and in this video we’re going to be going over the six easy steps on how to install a drip irrigation system for your garden installing your own drip system is easier than you might think once you get

It installed it’s automated and we’ve hardly had to do any repairs to it in the last 4 years that we’ve had it installed but after this video you’ll be able to install your own drip irrigation system at a fraction of the cost of what it would take to hire somebody to do it

For you drip irrigation system is composed of the following parts to control everything you have a sprinkler timer you’ve got your sprinkler manifold and you’ve got your main sprinkler line which is composed of PVC pipe and we usually go with a schedule 40 pipe from that main trunk it branches out when it

Gets to your garden still using PVC pipe so we run our main lines and our branches at a 3/4 in pipe and then from there we reduce it down to half in pipe trying to reach other plants you can reduce it down to a/4 in hose the really

Great thing about doing a sprinkler project is the list of tools is pretty small outside of just your typical landscaping tools like you’ll need these sprinkler pipe cutters which are very handy I’ve also found it very useful to use one of these really small shovels when you’re bent over working in the

Trench it is nice to have a little shovel to help you get out all the little clumps of dirt that end up falling into your trench and I don’t care what age you are it is always nice to have this foam pad here to kneel down

On kneeling down on dirt and rocks all day is not fun what I found working on sprinkler pipe is it’s very nice to have your sprinkler pipe organized into different bins I’ve got one bin that holds all of my bigger sprinkler parts this is all of my 3/4 in attachments my

Couplings my elbows my te’s and then I have a medium box which holds all of my attachments for my 1/2 in hose and then I have a smaller box that holds all of my attachments for my/ Quin hose keeping them separated out into three different bins end is very helpful one because

It’s a visual representation of what you have to work with and two if I know that I’m going to be working outside doing just the dripper system for the next hour all I’m going to take out is my one box that has all of my quarter in drip

System parts this way I’m not having to dig through the box and trying to find that one little thing that I need to complete my system now what’s nice about reducing down to the halfin pipe is the parts are smaller and they’re pretty much the same concept as the larger 3/4

In pipe you’ve got couplings you’ve got te’s you’ve got caps the only difference is the color of the hose and that just acts as a visual representation of hey this is a difference in pipe and then the same goes for the/ quinch pipe and a lot of times these parts are black

Instead of brown so 3/4 in is usually white 1/ in is usually brown/ qu in is usually black and that’s just a visual cue to help you identify quickly that these are different sized pipes I also like to get my more specialized components from the sprinkler supply

Stores so that’s why I opted to get this all-in-one manifold because there’s less components on it that could break down the road the reason we use schedule 40 pipe is because it has a thicker wall the instances where you’d use a thinner wall PVC pipe is like if you’re adding a

Central vacuum system to your house there is a difference between a slip fit tea and a threaded tea slip fit is just what it sounds it slips onto your pipe and to attach the two you just use PVC glue and then you have a threaded attachment and that’s just what it

Sounds it threads down and you twist it on and you don’t need to use teflon tape when you’re dealing with threaded pieces Step One is probably the step where most people just give up it’s the planning step 10 times out of 10 this will determine the success or the failure of

Your project the reason most people give up when it comes to planning your project is because it requires a lot of forethought and research and basically just mapping out your entire project the important thing to remember when you’re planning a project is all of the planning that you do at the beginning of

Your project will pay off in dividends at the end of your project the last thing you want is to not have a plan go out and start digging put everything in and realize you made a huge mistake what I’ve found to be the easiest when it

Comes to planting your garden is to work backwards you want to list out what you want to grow first and then work backwards from there planning your garden can be as simple as just writing out what you want to do in your garden whether it’s planting vegetables bushes

Trees roses you can have a section for herbs you may have a section for succulents there are so many options but really the determining factor is what do I want to grow you want to take into consideration do I want to have planter boxes do I want to have any bushes do I

Want to have any trees we wanted planter boxes to kind of just separate our vegetables from other things like bushes we want to have a peach tree our garden used to just be a section of dirt and Mulch on top of it we would just rake

Out the mulch plant the seeds let them grow a little bit and then put the mulch back on this was great for a while but really wasn’t the most convenient for our situ situation I really like to put everything on Google sketch up because it’s a software I’m already familiar

With and it really just helps me visualize everything I can do with my garden plus it allows my wife to see what is in my brain she can offer her input and then together we can come up with a final plan of what we’re going to

Build the best part about planning is it will save you so much time on the back end once you’ve put everything down on paper and it works all you have to do is then follow your plan and you may run into a few Road bumps along the way but

Overall your project will still proceed as you planned it when it comes to adding drip irrigation to your garden I feel like there are two main routes you can go one route requires no digging and it allows you to just buy a timer which has some Splitters on the end and you

Can add it to your hose bib outside to be honest I don’t have any experience with this where we live we have to take our hoses off every fall and then put them back in in the winter you have to deal with storing everything I didn’t know how the hose timer would work

Outside being exposed to the elements it might have been okay but again I just didn’t want to have to deal with it plus I love any opportunity to work out in the garden and build stuff the second option is to install sprinkler pipe running to your garden and then turning

It into a drip system like what we did another reason I like to use Google SketchUp or some kind of software on my computer is I’m able to make adjustments and see how other Renditions would look as you can see here we went through a few different Renditions before my wife

Was like dude what are you doing we need a functional Garden not an English garden not the boore state and yes I did want like a 6 tall statue waterfall in the middle of our garden I thought that would be super cool this is a great time to decide if your current sprinkler

Timer is what you want based on our previous years of using the old sprinkler timer I was done with it I hated dealing with it every single spring and having to sit there on my little bar stool and try and program it I was done so we upgraded and bought

This timer and it has been worth every penny because now I can access it with my phone and even program it from my couch a good mode of thought when you’re planning out your dripper system is that one port coming out of your sprinkler manifold equals one zone for your

Sprinkler timer so in our case we have one zone that comes out and it feeds our raspberry plants and we have one zone that feeds our garden and we’ve got a third Zone that feeds the grass in our backyard the most important thing to consider when you’re swapping out your

New timer is to make sure it has the capacity to run all of the zones you have for example I have six zones covering my front yard and my backyard combined I needed to make sure my time timer would program six zones so not only am I able to program my timer and

Run the different zones from my phone the thing I loved about my new timer was I was able to access it from my phone in the garden and turn it on so many times when I’ve been installing or repairing sprinklers with the old base model timers I’ve had to run back and forth

Between the timer and the zone to turn on the water turn off the water everything can be done on my phone and I can turn it on for a minute test my sprinkler fittings make sure there’s there’s no leaks and then turn it off or with this new timer long gone are the

Days where I’ve had to incorporate my wife into helping me out Eagle One this is Rooster do you copy rooster this is Eagle one we are standing by for initiation of sprinkler testing Eagle One copy that you are a go repeat you are a go for initiation of sprinkler

Test affirmative initiation of sprinkler testing in three 2 one step two is running your sprinkler pipe from your sprinkler manifold now before you dig you do want to make sure to call your local utility company most utility companies have a free program where you call ahead you request them to come to

Your property you’ll want to give them at least one week heads up and they will Mark out where you have all of your underground buried pipes or wires if you start digging and you cut a wire or you bust a pipe a crap it will be your fault

And you’ll be stuck with the bill here you can see our sprinkler pipe manifold we have one for our front yard and then we had to extend it over and to run it to a new sprinkler box that would feed our backyard now when it comes to determining the depth of your sprinkler

Pipe it’s really up to you because of where we live I wanted there to not ever be an issue where I was going to be concerned about my sprinkler pipes freezing in the winter I went at least 12 in deep and sometimes 18 and we’ve had our sprinkler system in our backyard

For 10 years now and we’ve never had an issue with it freezing in the winter it is much easier to run more pipe when you’ve got the trench dug if you think yeah we’re going to put in our garden here this year and if we like it in a

Few years We’ll add another section to our garden trust me you will most likely not want to dig up your trench again no you won’t so while you’ve got your trench dug it is always easier and add more sprinkler pipe to your trench that

You may or may not use down the road one important thing to remember when you’re using this PVC glue is it dries ridiculously fast when you put it on the one end of the pipe it doesn’t dry too fast but as soon as you connect it to

Another piece of pipe it will be dry in literally 5 seconds so you really want to make sure before you attach anything do it test fit to make sure everything works and it’s aligned properly step three is to run your sprinkler pipe to all the different areas of your garden

Then when you get to each specific location to add a stub up a stub up is basically a term that means a pipe is sticking up out of the ground you just put a 90° elbow up and then you cap it off at the top this allows you to locate

The final vertical location of your sprinkler pipe to allow you to Finish the build process around it and when you’re adding a stub up you want to be conservative with the amount of pipe that you leave above the ground this is not the step where you want to be very

Precise about where to cut it off to be level with your dirt for example we added planter boxes in our garden with my trench being 12 to 18 in deep plus we added another 12 in on top of that for the planter box my stub up needed to be

At least 30 in tall but I didn’t want to have to deal with cutting it to the exact height at this time so I just made them like 3 ft tall so I would be able to see them clearly be able to put my planter boxes around them put my soil

Into the planter boxes and then at that point I can cut them off level with my dirt so in our garden we ran a stub up to each planter box and then we ran one stub up that would be connected to funny pipe which would feed our roses and our

Two bushes near the entrance of our garden we ran a stub up to the back corner of our garden where we have a little retaining wall and that stub up is going to feed our peach tree that we’re going to put in this back corner

One thing I’ve done with my stub UPS is I’ll connect the 3ft section to my 90° elbow first so that when I connect the elbow to my horizontal piece of pipe I can be able to adjust it from the 3ft piece much easier and make sure that my

St up is going to go straight up and down if you just attach your 90° elbow to your horizontal piece in the ground without making sure that it’s straight up and down you could end up with a stub up that kind of shoots out to a weird

Angle when laying out your pipe it’s also really important to add in these little drains these drains allow your sprinklers to completely drain out after the sprinkler has finished running its cycle you want to put your drains at the lowest points of your sprinkler lines to determine your lowest points you can

Always do a little test with a level if you’re concerned about it though I would just add more drains the drains won’t affect the pressure of your system that much in our case I didn’t want to have to worry too much about the levelness of

My pipes and so I just added four drains one in each corner of our new Garden expansion now when you add a drain to your garden I found it if you put it at a 45° angle going down this will work really well to get all the water out and

Our so doesn’t drain super fast what I did was dug it down about 2 ft and filled that hole around the drain with gravel I also added gravel on top of it so that all of the area around the drain was covered with rocks and that would reduce the likelihood of dirt seeping

Into there over time and causing it to be blocked now before you start covering up your pipe you want to make sure and do a quick pressure test the easiest way to do this is to add a cap at each St up and you’ll need to glue those caps down

And then turn on your sprinkler for a few minutes and walk around as it’s running and check for any leaks the only areas where you should see water coming out are from your drains step four if you’re running your drip system to any planter boxes now is the time to add in

Your horizontal pipe step four is probably one of my favorite steps because this is where I get to see all my hard work pay off at this point in my garden I’ve already covered up all of the pipe now you’re very close to being at the end of your project and then

Depending on the weather I found it very nice to be able to put out a sun canopy this saved me so many times from getting overheated working out in the hot sun the tools you need to run this 1/2 in pipe are pretty basic you may want to

Keep out your pipe cutters just in case I also bring a pair of scissors with me you will want to keep your PVC glue with you make sure to bring out your medium bucket with all your 1/ in components you may still need a couple pieces of

Your 3/4 in pipe a lot of times what I’d have to do in my garden is I would take the stove up cut off the top and I’d have to place a 90° elbow so that the water would be directed horizontally from there I could run a t and then that

Would help me outline the Box perf perimeter and there are basically two types of half-in pipe you’ve got what they call funny pipe I don’t know why it’s called funny pipe it’s not really that funny and it’s actually pretty difficult to work with as far as like

Punching in an emitter it allows you to have the flexibility to be able to place the sprinkler or the drip system wherever you need it to be for example with my bushes I was able to run funny pipe to that spot without having to use

PVC pipe that’s hard and I would have to do 90° angles to get up and over funny pipe I just connect the adapter and then I run long length to the final location of where my peach tree or my bush is going to go the other halfin pipe is the

Ones that come with pre-fabricated emitters every 12 to 18 in depending on which kind you buy one quick note is you will want to make sure that you use the correct adapters for the different pipe you’re using as you can see the funny pipe barbs are much less aggressive and

Speaking from personal experience you won’t want to try and use the brown adapter for the funny pipe it is the worst so there are basically three modes of thought when when it comes to determining how much water you want to supply to your planter boxes the first

One being just utilizing half in pipe with emitters already built into it and then to determine how much water you want to go into your planter box you can add or reduce more of that/ in pipe the second mode of thought is you can do the exact same planter box pattern in each

Of your boxes and then you can add in individual emitters after the fact to supply more water to any of your various plants the third method of thought is you can maintain your same perimeter of the 1/2 in pipe and then add in a couple soaker hoses to really soak the whole

Box if you need more water the most simple for us in our situation I ran the/ in pipe that has emitters pre-fabricated in the same pattern in all of my boxes and then depending on which plants we had in each box I would add either a soaker hose or two or I’d

Add in an extra Third Run of the/ in hpe that has emitters in it being able to customize it like this is very nice because all I’m worried about is how much time my sprinklers are on early in the summer I’ll do it for 5 minutes and

Then when it gets hotter outside in the late summer I usually bump up my timer to 7 to 8 minutes and if you’re not sure how much water your plants are going to need run the same perimeter around each of your planter boxes and then see how

Your plants do for a week if you see them start to wilt then you can add in a third line or add in a soaker hose or another emitter or when you check on your plants over the course of a week and all the foliage still seems very

Healthy then you know you supplied them with enough water all of your 1/ in and/ qu in hoses come in a coil when you’re trying to place those out in your garden it can be really frustrating because you spread it out and then it just rolls

Back on itself what I like to do is as I’m getting ready to go outside I’ll roll out my halfin hose and get something to hold it at both ends and let it just sit in the Sun for 15 to 20 minutes this will get it warmed up and

Easier to use and then when you try and run it to each of your boxes it will be a long straight run step five is placing all of your emitters the tools needed for this are very simple you’ll need scissors to cut your hose and then you

Don’t have to have these tools but if you’re going to do a whole run of emitters these tools will help save your hands I’ve got this purple punch tool basically holds in your hand and then it allows you to punch a hole into your pipe I’ve also got this red punch tool

It’s even easier to use it allows you to use it like scissors and punch a hole into your piping 1/ quarter inch hose and those come in three Styles first one is a soaker hose it just emits water out of the whole hose the second one is a hose that comes pre-fabricated with

Emitters the third type is a/ quin hose with no emitters you want to use this to span longer distances from your main trunk all the way to your plant step six is to turn everything on and to make any adjustments my sprinkler timer has a

Default setting of 1 minute so I turn it on and I check the water flow in my planter box the nice thing I found about these emitters is each color represents a different flow rate and typically these emitters are cataloged by the gallons per hour that they emit they’re

Very customizable to the needs of your Garden I typically prefer to get my drip emitters from sprinkler supply stores they have a very wide variety and their quality is topnotch thank you so much for watching until the end I really hope this gave you the confidence to be able
