Yeah did you really really think it’s a few years since I visited this Garden it’s great to be back to enjoy its beauty once again it’s called goru and it’s just over the Blue Mountains in New South Wales in the Tiny Town of little heartley it’s actually
Owned by a m of mine Alan Jackson and amongst all these trees and shrubs he’s growing one of my all-time favorite plants the Japanese maples in fact he’s got 300 different varieties of them let’s discover few you say I know what you think yeah I know what you
Like I’m just taking in the Tranquility of this beautiful garden surrounded by these treasured Japanese maples in Japan they’re often referred to as keto calm and at Peace the regular species Japanese maples are a lovely lush green they start out in Spring like this and go an incredible array of colors during Autumn but the ones that I really love are the purple leaf ones aren’t they stunning and they have this color in both spring
And again in Autumn and they go through a variety of colors during the summer now this one is namura and this fellow here is Emperor 1 a very big popular Maple right around the world you’ll notice that they have similar leaves to the green one quite large like our hands
Or as they say in Japan like the hands of a frog and the frogs in the lake behind me I think are agreeing yep but you know my alltime stunners that I really seek out are the cut leaf Maples aren’t they magic they’re just like lace on a tree you’ve got the color but you’ve got this delicate finess in the foliage I just love them this one here is to mukama and it’s a little bit deeper a little bit darker color than this fellow here which is Shojo shadari
Shidara in Japanese just means weeping and it’s just stunning now when you plant them in a landscape don’t go sort of combining them with a whole lot of other plants leave them alone to to really stand and shine in the landscape because the color and their is really quite Sensational if you want
To go for green you can get this same Lacy cutleaf Variety in green this one’s called veritus same Lacy foliage but a green in Color so how old is this little planting here this is 25 years old right right oh is it magic yes this is really beautiful in here people tend to think you know these trees grow quickly sort of Maples are reasonably quick growing uh it takes
About 7 8 years to grow from seed to get a reasonable size plant and from then on you can either graft it or leave it as a normal Maple as we do have here as a an over story Alan what are your top tips in growing these Japanese maples plenty
Of mulch uh we do use a seaweed extract on the plant material uh upon planting every 6 weeks until they settle in and that’s basically all you need and keep the moisture content up sun and shade sun and shade depending if it’s a red variety or a green variety more sun the
Redder they become the red varieties and the green one if you haven’t got Sun put a green one in what about watering very simple once a week in the summer if it’s in a pot you might have to do it on a daily basis to keep that
Root uh structure wet and moist not over wet with good drainage what happens if you’ve got a sandy soil sandy soil is fine yep just plenty of mulch on top and incorporate a lot of um a compost material right hold that moisture hold that moisture but the biggest secret is
Mulch so should you prune them you can prune Maples go away for 5 years and then all of a sudden it’s gone reverted back to its original position because they want to the maples decide what Shape The last time I visited a goru was at the end of a very long drought now the lake is full the gardens Lush and green and as for the Japanese maples they are looking Sensational I just about to say goodbye in appreciation for all your work for me and the garden a unique
Plant called Yuki Gamo in Japanese meanings floating clouds floating cloud thank you very much mate it’s awesome well you’re no long a student you’re a graduate friend my very much and come again all the best thanks Alan cheers mate how lucky am I look at that
