Let me clarify houseplant watering for you:
.
Q: How often do you fill up your car?
A: About once a week.
.
Analysis: you understand that filling up your car is based on how much you drive, the fuel consumption of the car, and your threshold of comfort as you look at the fuel level, the *cue* to fill up (e.g. do you wait until a quarter tank or when the empty light turns on?)
.
You know it’s not PURELY based on the type of car – like Honda Civics need gas once a week but the BMW 3-series can be filled up every 10 days – sounds ridiculous, right?
.
Given that you are driving, you fill up mostly according the *cue* you’re comfortable with.
.
The houseplant equivalent is this: given that your plant is receiving adequate light, you water according to the *cue* of soil dryness, not some arbitrary schedule based purely on the plant type – a scheduled approach was created for human convenience.
.
Lastly, there are only three broad strategies or watering cues to use:
(1) keep evenly moist
(2) when partially dry (may have a wide range)
(3) when completely dry
.
Go and read any plant-specific advice, you’ll basically only find one of these three ways to water…
