Hey everyone Janie here welcome back I have kind of a fun field trip today I’m out with Jason he’s got the camera and we are at let me I want to make sure I say this right Northern California home and garden expo is that right Jason
That’s right okay so we are here because one of the most wonderful people in the whole entire world Michael Glassman is here and he is he has like a presentation a a talk on the new um the new trends in landscaping for 2024 so he
Asked if I wanted to come and we said absolutely 100% so Jason and I are going to take a look around the Expo today it is Sunday it is incredibly rainy today so there’s not a lot of people here yet it’s also really early um but I think
That that’s a good thing cuz I think we’ll be able to get a really good look at all the booths that are here and hopefully we’ll get some good ideas for our landscape hopefully I don’t get too many ideas so I spend too much money but
You know it is what it is so let’s go see let’s go take a look around and let’s see if we can find Michael Thank you very much and thank you for braving the weather to come and listen to this um hopefully you’ll enjoy it and it’ll um inspire you um I picked this topic um trends for 2024 because a lot of my clients as well as myself always want to know what’s new what’s different
What goes on in the industry and one of the things that people don’t realize is where do Trends come from what what kind of drives the trends well we definitely know Trends are developed by the economy um if we’re all broke there are things that we can’t too um climate today it’s
Pouring rain we know what the climate’s going to do and when the drought hit and everyone started talking about drought tolerant and and paying for water um resource availability when you can’t get product you can’t use it so it Trends are are are basically affected by the availability of product about 2020 when
Co hit and you know product was really really difficult best example of that I’ve got to just quickly tell you was wood I remember that it was almost impossible to be able to find fencing people were lining up going to the Bay Area lining up at 6:00 in the morning
Just to be able to get fencing just plain fencing my own self which was amazing which deals with the economy and availability we were remodeling our house and the contractor had laid out the floor doors and he was taking plywood sheets to cover it over so we
Wouldn’t ruin it well the plywood sheets were normally like 12 to14 they went up to $80 for one sheet of plywood he used to throw them away and then when I talked to him he said no I’m putting them in a warehouse at 80 bucks a sheet
We can’t afford to get rid of them water availability is also in landscaping something that we really have to be concerned with yes if you have unlimited amounts of water you don’t think about it but when they start talking about drought there is something that we
Really need to be aware of and then of course the the constant change of taste and fads we’re always social media talks about the different fads the different tastes so that’s what influences Trends we’re going to start by going through the major trends that are going on right
Now so Trend number one is the the idea of creating outdoor rooms reclaiming lost spaces and what I always tell people is contrary to the old saying bigger is not necessarily better good things come in small packages the lot sizes are getting smaller and we need to start thinking about every inch is
Valuable you don’t no place is a throwaway space so let me show you some before and afters you’ll get a kick out of this this was a before this is a tiny backyard the back had two story homes that looked in blank wall this was the neighbor’s garage Southern Exposure had terrible
Drainage the only place for the air conditioner again this was a neighbor’s garage was in this corner you couldn’t move it anywhere else because there was no place to move it so this was the before this is the after we made this place into we designed it into an
Outdoor room they didn’t have a dining room this became their dining room so how did we solve the problem problem number one was privacy so by constructing rais Planters and putting giant Timber bamboo got rid of the two story homes behind it then they had a
Lot of problems with noise so the custom Fountain and the water Cascades down created this wonderful the the material you’re looking at is Rainbow Limestone and so that material was also used in the remodel of the house they used it on their fireplace and on the accent so
Bringing the indoor door and the outdoor together and then you can see you’ve got this wonderful dining space the air conditioner couldn’t be moved but who wants to stare at it so we did this louvered screen made that a feature instead of something ugly you we brought
The rainbow limestone in there and this is louvers so that the air flows in there but you don’t stare at the air conditioner and think of about this ugly space closeup of the of the fountain you can see the water Cascades down and it’s a really beautiful sound and this is
What it looks like at night when you’re creating these outdoor rooms it’s not just for during the day it’s what it looks like at night it’s a whole another dimension and you can see the night lighting is just spectacular another before condo this was a blank wall the
Garage is right there so you pull in from the alley they had this blank space and the client said to me we really want this space to feel like an outdoor room this is the after what we did was we wound up finding helping the client find these old antique windows and shutters
So we hung those on there those became the kind of the focal point built this Fountain itself self-contain water Cascades down and then this is Three Rivers flagstone the Terracotta on the floor is the same terracotta that goes from the inside to the outside so it truly feels like this Outdoor Room and
Then this is you can see the dining table staining the fence so that it just doesn’t look like an old barn and you can see what a it’s it’s a room it before was that’s what’s so amazing when you look at the before was just this
Space no one would want to go out there and then the after creates this environment that you want to go out there you gravitate to it Trend number two the number one thing that people ask me for is outdoor dining and outdoor kitchens they also asked me for
Fireplaces or fire features so I put these in there to kind of show you different styles this one W second place for the State of California um this was on spectacular outdoor kitchens on HDTV it used to belong to the secretary of agriculture this really neat space they
Use their site every single day for fundraising for political events they were one one couple that instead of just using it once in a while every single day they were going on and in this case you had an upper sitting area you walked down this had a pizza oven the a
Barbecue a refrigerator um a dishwasher everything was all self-contained in this area plus it had an overhead with fans heaters and misters I love this one ultimate dining that’s what we think about we are so lucky we live in California where where right now you know we complain about the weather
Occasionally oh it’s cold it’s rainy or anything when I talk to family members that are living back east and it’s snow and they’re digging out feet of snow they can’t even go outside because there’s so much there’s so many winds there’s so many blizzards and I think to
Myself God all we have is a little rain and we’re complaining well we live in California and nine months out of the year we can go outside we can eat outside we can dine outside so the idea of outdoor dining is so ultimate when you’re designing your kitchen remember
You don’t want to be standing there and everyone looking at the back of you so if you can sit here and then you’ve got your seating area all the way around it this client actually turned their outdoor kitchen into a cooking school she would once a month invite people
Over she’d have guest chefs and they did this as a cooking school I love this because it’s just like the ultimate for outdoor dining I love this one this is great their outdoor dining area when we saw this job they had some big boulders that were existing there was no way
Those Boulders were ever going to be moved so we made them a a feature we actually had the Traver team come up and I wanted this to feel more like a deck this is actually a porcelain tile with a rough texture that looks like a deck and
Then we made this their dining area I just think it’s such a cool space because again you sit out there you can Overlook the yard and it’s just it’s a it’s a retreat it’s a place away away from it and we are actually had the contractor um detail this out so that
The boulder became an integral part of the design even in a small space this is in a little teeny development you have the wonderful dining area with the outdoor kitchen and it gets hot let’s face it when it’s 105 so we have the out overhead structure that gives you shade
With the fans keeping the air circulating and then what I love about this is you got a blank wall so the trellises with a vine on it softens that wall so you’re not sitting there just looking at Hardscape everything is softened down with planning growing up on the overhead white potato vine over
Here has been planted Cherry Laurels that’ll eventually get 20 feet tall block out the twostory house fire features the the world is there’s so many different designs this was a design I did kind of going back to gy we did the fireplace and it was all mosaic tile
It’s gas and you can see you even have the glass over here and then this is a again a really cool outdoor fireplace with the niches for the wood even though it’s gas it has the illusion of a a wood burning fireplace Trend three this is something that when people say well
What’s going on in terms of design it’s called clean simple lines little bit more contemporary and we have a little touch of an Asian influence so this was the before this is not the after what wound up happening was the tree came down this was her dining room we took
The window that’s behind there and made it into a door this is in the fabulous’ 40s it was for an interior designer that we wound up developing this wonderful relationship with and this is the before this is the after so again that was where the tree was the this is her
Dining room so she opens the door comes out into this Upper Terrace with the fireplace a door coming down here the dining area over here we’ve really created this wonderful feeling of levels and in then a closeup we also designed a swimming pool so this is what you see
When you compare that to that I mean it’s pretty amazing another yard this was just all grass and my client said I love the look of kind of an Asian feel so we’ve been working with her for years you have a dogwood Japanese maple Serpentine Cedar aelia’s Phoenicia
Variety this was if you can imagine was just plain boring lawn and by putting the different levels with planting you now have this incredible environment and the this slide shows you clean crisp lines even if you’re using concrete breaking it up with synthetic lawn seat walls for sitting areas with a fire pit
There are ways of doing it that create this wonderful environment that’s clean and crisp but it’s not sterile looking Trend four is edible Landscapes rais vegetable Gardens fruit trees and of course pollinators so I love this one this is a before a tutor style home with dead lawn
This was down in Southern California and this is the after everything that we planted is a vegetable we did the raised pots in here this was done for a TV show that I worked on I actually was Garden police I was one of the co-hosts we did
These are all sorts of lettuces all sorts of vegetables in here the clients told us they kept in touch with us and they said they provide produce for the whole street they grow it and every once a year everyone comes and they they give them bags of produce but it shows you a
Landscape you can do most of your your planting in Edibles rais Planters they don’t only have to be wood or metal in this case this is Natural Stone and it’s CA with travertine a little bit more of a formal look and this is all her big vegetable
Garden with the focal point being a sculpture vgo plant pters these are really really great in this case what I love about them is they come in all different sizes all different shapes all different heights you put them together they last forever I just love the look
Of these and then of course we the number one thing people are talking about birds and and bees and pollinators all of these whether it be Salvia whether it over here um you can put in Salvia you can put in butterfly bushes examples of Po ators even in my own
Garden this is salvia Luca um which I love kfia vermillionaire you should see the birds the butterflies the one thing we get more than anything which is hysterical are dragonflies they absolutely love all the pollinators and this is just design I utilize the plants that I did were the ones that are the
Same colors that were in the sculpture so that at different times of the year it plays off the sculpture so the blue was the Pago the purple was the Salvia the orange was the kfia so there’s always there’s reasons behind things over here this is um these are really
Neat pollinators again you’ve got some lavender butterfly bushes in the background but again these are all pollinators it’s in the landscape where people really wanted birds and butterflies and there’s a closeup of the butterfly bush I love these I love the color the secret to them is if you have
Them if you cut off the old blossom they just keep blooming over and over again Trend five is less water use of drought tolerant plants over here Forum TX it’s a it’s a flax and then behind it is a Smoke Tree very colorful very interesting great textures very drought
Tolerant a great before this is not an after this is a house that we started with um it had a lot of good bones but oh my God was it ugly those we called they look like whales and the people said we wanted something wonderful we wanted something low maintenance and so
What we did was first of all I suggested they repaint the house and they take it all out this is the after so the new house we left the roof the roof is great it’s kind of this L wonderful sage green gave them a new front walkway all of
These lavender ornamental these are alows ornamental strawberry this is a great shot this is the same view I’m to show you this that view to this view same house so you got rid of the whales and that raised planter that was falling apart alows and ornamental strawberry
And um again for trees they had some Citrus this was just a really wonderful space again the last Trend this is the almost the end the last trend is low maintenance number one thing that people say to me over and over again they don’t say to me I want a yard that’s high
Maintenance they don’t say to me oh I want to spend hours and hours and hours in my yard it’d be wonderful if they do they basically say design something that’s low maintenance and even the people that have large pieces of property the first thing they say to me
Is after it’s all done who can we get to take care of it and it’s like uh uh we don’t really have anyone it’s like there’s Mo glow and go go services but there aren’t people that really invest that there I’m sure there are but we
Haven’t found them so I put this in there to say that’s a trend low maintenance mine is a perfect example this was the before ugly ugly ugly front yard with one tree dead lawn a few shrubs this was the before that’s the after we water twice a week we’ve got a
Traver team walkway to the front door I love my planting in fact I should be pruning but I like the way it’s gotten so overgrown that it almost feels like a meadow and I left it pretty natural on the other side of these These are um red
Iceberg roses the neighbor has a big mobile home we’re talking a big mobile home it looks like the size of a house so I haven’t even pruned because the bigger my plants get the less I see the mobile home but you can see I mean it’s Lush it’s beautiful and it basically one
Day a week at the most I go out there and do a little pruning Hardscape if it’s Hardscape heavy and you use plants that are low maintenance you get a lush look and it’s low maintenance the steps the walls done in the in the Lead Stone Serpentine Cedars here asparagus foxtail
Asparagus it’s Lush it’s beautiful almost no maintenance dry creek beds are great especially if you need extra drainage and then you can accent them with planting and we I put this in there because it’s such a nice look when you’re doing a Dry Creek bed this is a
Technique to think about where do you put the big boulders well go to Nature and if you look in nature water doesn’t just go in a straight line it winds up starting an Old Creek starts coming out there there’s maybe a big boulder it can’t move the Boulder so that it
Trajectory the trajectory is it hits the Boulder and it goes a different direction so when you’re trying to create this natural look you do the same thing you’ve got the water coming here it hits these rocks goes this way that’s how you put in the big rocks making sure
You always bury them and then the Rocks down here nature doesn’t pick out all 1 in or all 3 in it’s all varied so when you’re doing a Dry Creek bed you vary the sizes and you don’t put them individually you put them in a bucket
You put them in a wheelbarrow you throw it out there wherever they land that’s the end so basically what I’m saying to you is when you’re designing look to the trends see this but here’s a little little hint follow the trends year a year because something that’s a trend this
Year may not be a trend next year something that’s popular this year may not be I’ve been doing this for over 40 years and so I see things that are used and reused and used nothing old nothing new is old nothing old is new it all
Gets recycled so when I see a new trend I investigate to see is this a trend that’s going to last or is it going to be a fleeting Trend I hope I’ve inspired you I thank you for coming out you probably were in a a boat or an ark or
Something to get here but I thank you so much and I hope you enjoyed it good job you that was so good you had like five people in the audience to start off with and by the end it was full it was full yes it so cool yeah I I was expecting no
One because of the rain and everything but but yeah it was fun I love the trends because people always want to know what’s new and different yeah it’s so I mean asked Jason I was taking notes like we got to do that I got to get in
Aave I got do that so I got to do that and there was a lot of really beautiful pictures that I’m going to say hey tour Garden Tour Garden Tour and it’s funny because there’s a couple of ideas I’ll I’ll share with you about a garden tour
Yet oh I love it you hear that you guys more garden tours Michael so you guys have your booth here this is awesome if any of you guys are local it’s what that deal is going for the next month yes for the next month instead of $200 for an
Hour’s consultation it’s 150 such a deal I wanted to turn around and be like everybody get it that’s a huge deal that’s amazing yeah but only if you’re local only if you’re local only if you’re local all right you guys Michael and I we’re going to go walk around a
Little bit more I’m going to wrap this video up right now but uh Michael just introduced me to another landscape designer named Roberta Walker who’s in the same area and she does mainly drought tolerant landscap landcap she does among other things right right and she’s delightful delightful individual
Yeah she’s great great anyway I am I’m kind of talking her in taking us on a couple garden tours like Michael does so she is going to talk in about an hour so I think I’m going to film that as well and I will put that in another video so
Watch out for that again Roberta Walker Roberta Walker so you did awesome I loved it I did love it it’s just anytime you talk people just come it’s very it’s so fun anyway as Jason knows I have diarrhea of the mouth yeah yeah you do
That’s a good way to put it I hope you all enjoyed this and I hope you all have a chance to get in your garden Today

The examples Michael had were beautiful but way beyond my means. Those hardscapes must of cost tens of thousands of dollars.
Janie and Jason thank you for risking your lives by going to this show. Michael is amazing and I loved his presentation. I would gladly pay for his help but alas he’s not in my area. Thank you Michael for your knowledge and sharing what you know. You 3 make the dream team!
This was outstanding!!!
Love Michael Glassman's designs! Beautiful!!
OK, I needed this as the last few days I've been looking out our window (MI) and just can't 'see' it – what to do to create some rooms. Thank you, Janey and Jason and of course, Michael Glassman. Thank you, Thank you ❤
Loved the presentation. Love garden tours.

Great video Janey. I cannot believe that you are back on your foot already. Wow you recovered fast from your last surgery.
That was inspiring!
He’s amazing!
I love listening to Michael. Thank you Janey and Michael
Thanks so much! I learned so much as always from Michael! ❤
Love Michael’s designs! Too bad I live in Orlando FL.
So interesting! If I was local it would be so neat to have Michael look at our yard. Our 1.25 acre layout is very similar to yours even down to the ranch style house but we are in SW part of Washington with lots of Doug Firs and Cedar trees.
What's local? I live in Loomis is that local enough i think davis is about 45-60 min drive
Michael Glassman is so engaging because he loves what he does and he is excited by plants and design! Of course people flocked to his presentation!
I’m beginning to think Michael Glassman is a magician, such a gift he has for turning outdoor spaces into a whole new dream world. I love his enthusiasm! Made me very happy to see you enjoying your day Janey!! 😘🇨🇦
Michael’s passion for his craft is so contagious. I could envision the dry creek bed in your yard when he displayed that slide. Can’t wait to follow along with your journey this year and watch your dream yard come to life!
