As a mad Keen Gardener there is nothing better than the long weekend you get all the extra time to get out in the garden and take off some of those jobs on the to-do list and with the Easter long weekend coming up there’s plenty of gardening to keep me

Busy mid Autumn is the perfect time to be getting into some hedging now you don’t want to be doing any drastic cuts on your Hedges because it’s just not warm enough to spring back in time for winter you just want to be taking a little bit off to maintain the shape and

Getting those lovely crisp edges on your Hedges what’s much more difficult to say than it is to actually do and it all starts with nice Sharp Tools now with your shears nice and sharp it’s time to set up a guide I’m using simple tomato steaks and yes I have been working out

Obviously they go one at each end and then I’m going to knock them in with a mallet and then I’m going to be using a string line to create create a really nice crisp Edge that we can cut to now when you set up your Edge you

Want to run your String Line either below or above the Hedge that way you’re not going to cut through it I prefer to go below because I like to see the string line against the Green of the Hedge I’m not up I’m not up it’s going down I’m speeding up I’ve seen Enough now it’s really important when you’re setting up your string line just to take your time to get it just right cuz you got to remember you’re going to be cutting to this line so this will be the finished [Applause] product now I’m just using my trusty old

Shears for my hedge now you’ll notice I’m dipping mine in water and that’s because by having wet blades you get a nice clean cut snippity snippity snippity snippity snippity now if I was to do this whole hedge with these I’d have forearms like Popeye so I’m going to be using some battery

Powered tools now the tip with this is to keep the blade nice and flat because that’s going to replicate on the Hedge if you come in on an angle obviously you’re going to get an angled hedge and also take your time with It now when you’re coming to do the edges of your Hedges you need to know what aspect you’re at now this is facing north side know Sun comes over here all day and I can have a nice straight edge if my hedge was orientated north south I

Would want it to be narrow at the top and broader at the bottom that way as the sun moves over it all the foliage gets light on it and you have a lovely dense hedge now once I’ve done the sides and going to go back with the hand

Shears and just tidy up any loose bits well I think the buxus is looking a lot smarter but now it’s time to move on to this chameleon now you’ll notice at this time of year this chamelea is covered in flower buds and we’ve even

Got a few flowers out so you want to be really careful when you’re pruning a hedge that’s in Bud because you don’t want to remove the flower beds if you do you don’t get any flowers so with the face I’m just using my secets to give it

A really light prune and only taking off the wispy foliage and then I’ll use my shears along the Top now my chamia and buxus are looking great however I’ve got a big patch of morr here which is looking worse for where not it is just one plant though that’s taking up about 4 M so I’m going to bite the bullet and I’m going to rip it out

And plant it with all this stuff behind me really handly though it’s been pouring with rain so this shouldn’t be too much of a difficult job you got to shake the pressure I’ll show you how to you know that ain’t nothing that now the mara is now gone but as you can

Tell that was just hard Work to replace the mara I’m using a blush sanqua chamia now this flower is almost identical to the one that’s already existing and it’s covered in buds so I know they’re going to flower at the same time now chamelia makes for an excellent hedge the sanqua varieties

Which is this small Leaf one they knit together when they’re pruned and because they’ve got this smaller harder leaf they can take the Northerly aspect that I’ve got here once they get in the ground I’m going to print them to the same height as the Existing the most important job when you’re gardening is tidying up and I know I clean my shears at the beginning but it’s really important to give them a quick clean at the end as well then I’m going to give it a quick spray with some lubricant to drive the

Water out and that’s going to stop it from rusting your tools going to last much longer if you can get all the dirt off them and it really is amazing the amount of stuff you can get done in a day and really is satisfying even if you

Do end up looking like well a bit of a drowned rat what a good day trying to C

  1. It's strangely satisfying to habitually view what good people down under are currently handling in the garden.

That, what a Northerly aspect means to Aussies & New Zealanders, is what a Southerly aspect means to us in North America, is fun to remember.

Technology "shrinks" the globe we call Home, yet, "continental aspect"? Still a Thing considered.
