Creekside Nursery
181 Pine Hollow Dr
Dallas, NC, 28034

Hey friends welcome to Gardening with Creekside  today we are going to be planting a mixed screen   on the very far backside of the Signature Garden  you can see behind me that there is the signature   Garden back there the barn of course and then the  retail portion of Creekside Nursery we are going

To be planting some beautiful North Pole arbores  and then two different kinds of hydrangeas we’re   going to be planting the uh ever famous limelight  panicle hydrangea from Proven Winners and then   one of my favorites incredible all and so we’ve  got a beautiful assortment of plants we’re only

Using those three right but we’re going to use  them in Mass to create a bit of a privacy screen   here like I said on the back side of the garden  so let me just kind of flip the camera around a

Little bit here and show you where we are and what  is happening the reason that we are going to have   a mixed privacy screen here is because back here  on the back side of the signature Garden there is

I don’t know if you can see the power lines but  there are there’s a power line that runs through   here and there are two power lines so we have to  keep this area open because this is an active line

And they come through every so often and maintain  it so one that’s why we can’t I don’t want to go   any further because heaven knows they have been  known to come in here and not be very kind to

Landscaping another reason why we’re not going to  go back any further is because as you can see this   whole area for years has been kind of our natural  um one of our natural composting areas it is it

Is infamously wet we call it like the bottomless  hole it is very wet there is a spring that goes   in here and in fact we just has just an inch of  rain right where Bren is there is standing water

So this area has just kind of swallowed up a lot  of green debris that we have used over the years   so whether it’s you know you can still see there’s  a little little patch of the sod so those little

Scraps of sod that we did not use mums that didn’t  sell we come back and we dump all the soil and the   green debris here there’s some old logs some you  know Treetops those kinds of things that come back

Here but we are no longer obviously because the  signature Garden is going to be a um a showpiece   piece that we’re not I don’t want to have this  continuous to be used as a composting area or

Kind of a a dump area for all of our green debris  so what we’re doing is we are creating this mixed   screen here that will hide it we still need to  access back there because our property continues

Back here so on each side of um the North Poles  we will have access to get through there so no   I do not want to to continue the North Poles all  the way up here because I need to be able to get

Machinery back there same thing on the far end  the creek side of it I need to be able to get   Machinery around back here so we’re going to leave  that um as is now of course the nice Evergreen

Star of the show are the North Pole arbores these  are gorgeous beautiful evergreen trees hearty end   zones 3 to8 Sun to part sun we have these on the  Privacy BM as well and they have done phenomenally

Well with they’ve been here for a year um these  will get to be about 10 to 15 ft tall and 3 to   5 wide nice low maintenance beautiful tree and  Jerry has spaced them four feet apart on Center

So if they get three to five wide four feet on  Center will be perfect so they will be touching   each other and provide a nice solid screen now  down here on the end we are using some of the

Beloved uh lim light hydranges of course these  are gosh I would say one of the very first like   industry standard setting panicle hydranges that  is blooms on new growth of course it gets nice and

Big I have one at the house that is every bit of  probably 10 ft tall by the end of this summer so   what we did is did something a little different  and we put three of them and I did them in a

Triangle now they are six feet apart because  these limelights will get nice and big so the   spacing is 6 to8 feet apart on them so I want them  at maturity to really look like one huge massive

Lim light here on the end it may be hard to tell  and maybe it’s not I don’t know but this is on   on a slope so we have like I said nothing is flat  here at Creek Side so we have a highend and then

We kind of work down this way and then the creek  is just right here so by putting these three Lim   lights together in a triangle letting them grow  up to look like one massive hydrangea it really

Kind of anchors and puts weight down on this end  of the bed as opposed to putting it up there on   um the upward side of the the flower bed and then  we came back through you can see the white proven

Winter cans these are incrediballs incrediballs  are a smooth hydrangea they can do sun to part sun   I have some at the house that are in Full full sun  doing quite well they will do nicely because this

Is not going to be on irrigation these will not  be in um sun up to sun down but they will still   considered a full sun area and you can see that we  did a double row these will be I believe correct

Me if I’m wrong four 4 5 ft um wide and so that  spacing is perfect we did right there at 4T and   then this is what I call window painting as far  as we have the row on the back and then we did

The second row and they’re not directly in front  of each other they’re um the the second row is   in between the back row that way again it will  be a nice big huge presence it will be a um it

Will look like one row of incredible balls with  in just probably about three years but it’ll be   nice and thick and full and then just make a  huge statement because we need to make a big   statement because as far as the distance with the  signature Garden it’s probably I don’t know U 50

Yards away and when you pull in to the green like  the to the retail portion of of Creekside Nursery   you may not see this right away but then when  you are standing either at the barn or you’re

At the signature Garden or the shrub lot and  the especially when they are in bloom like you   will see that it will your eye will be drawn to  the back here and um will just make a nice big

Statement as far as my Bloom time my incredib  balls will Bloom before my limelights so they   will just be beautiful and shining and gorgeous  and then the limelights for us really the very   end of June beginning of July that is when they  start to put on a show at that point because if

I want to continue my Blooms of incredible balls  I can come through and just snip off just do a   very light prune on those incredible balls they  blo on New Growth so that way hopefully at the

End of summer early fall I’ll get a whole another  flush of flowers and I could do that with my Lim   lights as well just gently prune them throughout  the growing season so maybe we can get a flush of

Fresh flowers that is a mouthful a flush of fresh  flowers um and it’ll be gorgeous in you know in   late summer early fall now um what we are going  to do it is a skeleton crew of Jenny and Jerry

It is like I said right here before Christmas and  the garden center is closed we all of our sweet   people have been sent home for Christmas to enjoy  time with their families so we’re going back to

Old school just Jerry and I and then of course  Brena um we have the Bobcat with the augur on   it so we’re going to work smarter not harder and  we’re going to go ahead and get these holes duck I

Think we’re going to dig all the holes then we’re  going to come back through everybody’s getting   biotone and then everybody gets planted into the  ground and I would like to go ahead and get this   area mulch today that way I can mentally check  this project off the list and we will be done

With this um yeah until you know next spring when  we just have to do a little bit of fertilizing and   that’s it so we’re going to get the Machinery out  and go ahead and get these babies in the [Music] ground [Music]   o

[Music] we just had to stop after we dug all the  holes we we have to show you this y’all as Jerry   said here at Creekside we have just about every  so condition you can think of yes we have thick

Hard compacted red clay and then we go all the  way to like lomy sand so what am I talking about   well let me show you here within I don’t know  what is that uh less than a 30 foot span let

Me you can actually see the color difference in  the soil um starting down because of course we   are by the creek right and um so this is just  the color difference as we move up the hill it

Progressively gets um a little bit redder and  just more orange until we get up here to the   tippy tippy top and it is just classic red clay  right here now I mean we actually just kind of

Laugh at it because it is just so funny classic  Creekside right here y’all um speaking to Classic   Creekside first empty pot and Miss pris I tell  you those of you that have German Shepherds or   dogs that have really thick coats and love the  cold you understand when I say got cold weather

Is like crack to this dog the colder it is the  happier she is the more frisky she is so let me   tell you she’s been quite spicy here the past  couple of days but this is on the other side

As well um just the absolute color difference  in the soil is hilarious now what we’re doing   of course is we kind of lined up all the plants  here in the center and Jerry has the nice big bag

Of biotone so every single plant that we plant  here at Creekside is going to get a beautiful   um application of the biotone starter fertilizer  this is absolutely one of the key to successes   when we are planting any of our Gardens here at  the nursery um it is specifically targeted for

Healthy root growth and root development and it  just because as we say happy Roots happy shoots   and this whole entire Garden right here this  flower bed will not be on irrigation so that is   one of the keys to success is if you do not have  Gardens on irrigation because let’s just face it

Irrigation can be an absolute luxury and um not  all of you know not even all of our Gardens are   on irrigation so a way to make your plants more  successful and you successful as a gardener is to

Make sure that you’re planting at the optimal time  of the year Where We Are North Carolina is Zone 8A   um we’re here in the pedmont meaning we’re not  in the mountains we’re not down you know on the

Coast we’re kind of right there in the middle  it is really a great time to plant your trees   your shrubs um a good number of your perennials  here in late late fall into winter because our   our temperatures are so relatively mild the soil  is still warm our soil never freezes if it does

Freeze it’s like the top inch for for like you  know the first hour of the morning but we don’t   get a deep freeze through our soil so these plants  will have lots of great beautiful and yes I do

Mean beautiful root growth during the winter that  way when the summer heat hits I’m I’m looking at   you July and August then these plants will have a  really strong healthy root system that they can go   out and search for water and nutrients and will  not be under great amount of stress during those

Heat um loving months of the year so that is why  planting at the right time and then using that   biotone starter fertilizer really is a key um game  Cher for us and for any other Gardener when you’re   planting plants like this that you basically  we’re going to plant this and forget it this

Is a very extremely low maintenance area this is  not high fuss we don’t have time for high fuss so   we’re just going to plant these and they will be  successful and they will be gorgeous so I’m just

Going to jump in here help him spread the for the  bike tone and get these babies planted uh you can   watch and see the the vast difference of how I  plant versus Jerry plants it’s quite funny to

Watch the two of us plant together as always  all right let’s get there we’re getting them Going [Music] all right my friends so today’s project is coming  to an end we got the North Poles in the ground the   incred balls and the limelights and we’re getting  it mulched yes that way I can just check this area

Off my mental to-do list it is complete and we  can just sit back and let these little babies and   their Roots grow all winter the sun is getting  low it is getting ready to go behind the hill

Right there and it’s only probably like I don’t  even know if it’s 3:00 yet that’s the thing where   we are we’re kind of down in a in a holler and so  the the winter sun seems like it sets awful fast

Around here but my gosh just picture it right  summertime everything’s green the North Poles   are just happy and growing and then beautiful  incredible Halls full of blooms and then later   on in the heat of the summer these three Limelight  hydranges will be just growing and in all their

Glory they will get nice and big right they will  fill in this area and we are going to continue   cleaning up along the creek bank right here so  uh don’t worry about that we’re going to get

All this neat and tidy and this is like I said  way back far in the signature Garden and we’re   going to be making our way here with the Outer  Perimeter flower beds and so it’s going to tie

In all together we actually have a whole like  Woodland Garden planned back here for up on the   hill um and so that’s G to be lots of fun but  what we’re using as far as our mulch this is a

Kind of the creek side blend it’s a special blend  that we have made for us it is 60% age pine bark   Vines and 40% compost we did this to test it out  to see how it would do as a mulch and my gosh it

Has done phenomenal we used this on the Privacy  burm and it did not wash it held the mama and I   we’re in there today doing a little maintenance on  some perennials we had to pull some weeds and as

My mama who is a very seasoned Gardener she was  like oh my gosh this is the most beautiful soil   and a lot of that has to do with this great blend  that we are using um like I said it has that pine

Bark so it’s the age pine bark notice it’s not  blonde you don’t see anything blonde in here if   you do it’s just some pine needles that had fallen  because we’re we’re storing this underneath the uh

Down there in the pines and so there are some  pine needles it’s all right um but the rest   of it of course is just that beautiful healthy  nutritious um compost that brings that organic   matter to the soil it breaks down it will feed  these plants over time and then of course that we

Preach here at Creek Side how important putting  a nice thick layer of compost down into your um   on your flower beds it is just a great beneficial  way to one suppress weeds so let’s think practical

Right as gardeners which one of the things that  we don’t like to do is fight the weeds so it   suppresses the weeds it retains moisture which is  so important right here because this is not going

To be on irrigation it insulates the roots of the  plants so here in the winter time it’ll keep them   nice and warm at an even temperature and In the  Heat of the summer it’ll keep them cooler it’s

Just like insulation in your house right so it  is keeping those more even temperatures for the   roots so that they don’t go through this massive  flux fluctuation that’s another reason another   way to think about it why it’s so important to go  ahead if you have plants and you can get them in

The ground they’re much better in the ground than  they are in the nursery can because think about   it they’re going to be those roots are going to  be much more insulated in the soil than sitting

Out in the can being exposed to all the air all  the way around it and then uh one last but not   least we can’t dis you know discredit this one is  that it uh it looks good right put in a nice fresh

Layer of mulch down on your flower beds makes it  look good and it is just overall just a good thing   it’s a great practice that you can do for your  garden but yeah super excited about this we came

Around and Jerry did bring that’s the great thing  about being in a nice wide open space he was able   to bring the bobcat and really just kind of come  back here and did a nice layer even that behind

The North Poles here we were talking and Jerry was  already dreaming of some plans to add annuals here   in the spring so what I think what we’re going  to do because I love this idea one again not

On irrigation so we have to think about that um  that’s we’re thinking about maybe putting maybe   a couple of vertigo grasses in this corner right  here because the incred balls are not going to   grow a tremendous amount right this year they’re  going to grow obviously but they’re not going to

Reach their mature size so we could either put  a vertigo grass or three vertigo grasses right   that is that beautiful annual grass from proven  winterers that is a massive purple fountain grass

So they get huge I mean they can get 5T tall in  a season and they just grow great and then he uh   had the great idea of coming down here in front  kind of where he is right now and doing some

Shire Bonas we could do Shire red that would be  beautiful we could do uh Cordial Cherry I mean you   could do any of the shires right that you wanted  to because we love those fire Bonas they are sun   or shade they are extremely low maintenance once  established they’re drought tolerant so we can

This beds already prepped so we can come here  in mid to late April and get them in the ground   and then just kind of walk away from them and  they will get nice and established before the

True heat hits and they will do great be a really  pretty contrast in front of the incredib balls so   you know always dreaming always planning right  yep yep all right my friends uh that is a wrap

For today we are going to go in and get our  afternoon coffee and just uh snuggle in it’s   going to be another chilly night tonight I think  it’s going to be in the low 20s again tonight I

Think we’re creeping back up we are creeping back  up yeah I think we’re still going to be in the   20s aren’t we we are we are yeah anyway we’re just  excited because it’s not going to be 80 degrees on

Christmas we had that one year and that was just  not fun at all but anyway we we enjoy the cooler   weather here at Christmas time it’s been a great  day thank you so much for watching and as always

We hope you have found this fun informative and  inspirational we’ll see you in the next video bye friends

  1. Thanks for all of the detailed information you teach us in each video. You are so smart Jenny!! Great job Jenny and Jerry!! Merry Christmas!

  2. 2 questions, how much sun is that area getting? It looks rather shaded. Secondly, we have a horrible deer problem in the Durham area. Would that just be a salad bar for deer?

  3. Love this video! I'm going to use this idea to plant in front of an old privet hedge that is nearly dead. Thank you for sharing this!!! ❤❤

  4. MERRY CHRISTMAS ALL!!! Lovely time watching you plant while I bake cookies. It looks terrific, and the combination is perfect. Love the arborveteas with hydrangeas then tall blowing grass.

  5. I used to live on land in the country, in my later years as an empty nester I have moved to town. I love my new home, but how my soul misses the sweet smells, quiet and nature of the country. Your channel has been such a blessing to me, you take me back to my peace, God’s blessing on you and your sweet family- God bless, Merry Christmas

  6. It's going to look fantastic and with any luck I'll stop by to see it when I visit Lake Lure next summer. Merry Christmas 🎄🎄✨✨🎄🎄

  7. Sorry, just not feeling this. The backdrop is natural yet your screen of plants is so linear and man-made looking especially when such few plant varieties were used.

  8. Nice job guys. One might think you have done this before! Wishing you and yours a Merry Christmas. Susan in Kernersville 🎄🎄🎄🎄🎄🎄🎄🎄🎄🎄

  9. It’s going to be beautiful 💚. I am going to tell Santa that I want a. JERRY AUGER ,it would be a dream ,I guess I need a Bobcat ,too. 🤣. ❤️🎄❤️. Merry Christmas to all 🌿🍃
