Garden Answer: Pressed Flower Ornaments! ๐ŸŒธ๐ŸŽ„๐Ÿฅฐ// Garden Answer

1 cup baking soda
1/2 cup corn starch
3/4 cup warm water

1. Whisk all of them together until thoroughly blended, then move the saucepan over to the stove. Turn the burner to medium heat and continue stirring, except use a regular spoon at this point because the mixture will get really thick ,until it starts to bubble and come away from the sides of the pan. When the mixture is thick and has started to resemble the consistency of soft play dough, remove from heat and let it cool for a few minutes then turn the dough out onto the counter and knead it for a couple of minutes until it feels soft and pliable. It will feel a lot like playdough!

2. Roll out with a rolling pin and use cookie cutters, a sharp knife, or the top of a drinking glass to cut out shapes. You can sprinkle glitter on at this point if youโ€™d like for extra sparkle, but i like to keep these looking fairly organic and natural. Use a toothpick or your knife to create a hole on the top of the ornament for the twine.

3. Place the pan in a 200 F degree oven and bake for about an hour. Baking time will depend on the thickness of your ornaments. Thicker will need longer to dry and thinner may not need the full hour. I like to start checking on them at about the 45 minute mark.

4. When fully dry, remove from oven and allow to cool for about ten minutes. Then they are ready for decorating!

5. Gather up your pressed flowers. If you donโ€™t have any pressed, no worries! Go grab a few leaves from your garden, houseplants, or pick up an inexpensive bunch of flowers at the grocery store. Place them in a flower press or between sheets of parchment paper and place them under a stack of heavy books. It takes about 2 weeks for them to dry depending on the thickness and moisture content of the things you choose to press. I ended up with a really pretty assortment for this project!

6. To secure flowers to ornaments, paint a thin layer of mod podge to the back of the dried flower or leaf and press it onto ornament, then paint another layer over the top of the flower overlapping onto ornament. Allow to dry then thread your twine through the hole created on the top, tie off, then hang on your tree!
