I asked eight plant experts their opinions on what’s going to be the hottest plant in 2024 we get answers from Bill at Silver Chrome Gardens aoid dad of aoid green houses Mike from MDA 1635 sha from only plants which I was super excited to hear from and then a
Few of my friends on Instagram who are really into the antherium or the alocasia world there are some clear Trends here and I pick people who are either Trend Setters or have extensive industry knowledge or they have both and this is what they said first up is my friend from the Pacific Northwest
Cheyenne she is one of the most wellth thought out answers and I think really interesting take on where the plant world’s going Cheyenne sells the plant rescue boxes and has been in the aoid world for quite a bit of time she says we’re going to see a lot of hybridized
Plants not just the antheriums but we might see different variations of the monstera and the philos although those are more challenging to get to flower also alocasia I personally haven’t seen an alocasia flower but but of course they do they are angiosperms then she also calls out a new aoid the cyos
Sperma I think I’m saying that wrong probably and also some semia aquatic plants this actually really interesting and then something similar to alocasia and kashia and when I was at the international aoid show I did watch Enid by a variegated kashia from Mike and we also have Mike in here cheyen then
Brings up a great point about the a prices crashing further the consistently variegated you know philad dendrin monstera that we’ve been seeing crash for the last year or two and then she brings up a great Point here about the variegated alocasia you’ll see this theme recurring but she says that the
Price is going to fall once people realize how often it mutates while being in tissue culture I’ve been doing a lot of tissue culture in this past week and I found a lot of variegation throughout TC it must be something in the hormones or the way that you’re sterilizing which
Creates mutation in the genes and creates variegation and they can also be grown from corn and that’s going to bring that price down too and then Cheyenne goes to explain that she thinks that Florida Beauty hybrids in particular especially if they carry on their variegation which it is kind of
Unstable those actually might come into popularity I personally have a bit of a vendetta against variegated philodendrons and I don’t know if I’m be super into a hybridized like bip penoli or anything like that I’m kind of over the fillows and I’m really excited for the antheriums the alocasias things that
We can grow out from a really small level to grow out much larger in our IKEA cabinets or these very specific controlled environments that’s where I think the hobby is really going to go for those of us that are still in it we’ve been growing these plants for a
Few years now and we’ve figured out how to grow your monsteras your filad dendrin your basic plants but now we really want to challenge as she says at the end filad dendrin hybrids are my best bet for the overall pick for the market though I really respect that
Opinion and it’s different from a lot of the opinions I got so let’s roll into the next ones now bill at Silver Chrome Gardens a man of few words simply responded that antheriums will continue to be popular and I don’t think he’s wrong bill is the son of Dennis rolante
And of course Anum rolante like the one NSE tropical sold out for $1,500 this plant is named after Dennis so I don’t think they’re wrong that an theorum are going to continue to be really popular those big black dark velvety leaves I think is kind of what we’re all after
That’s definitely what I’m looking forward to having in my cabinet at home and that leads me into Nick’s answer from chew antherium on Instagram I know he’s a big antherium guy that’s exactly why I reached out to him and he said that the things that are popular now in
Q4 of 2023 are probably going to be popular and I think he’s right Black Velvet Eastern Panama aka antaki the Carla Blacker yeah and he says the dress I think the pops are going to continue to be popular and then I think hybridized versions of those parent
Plants are going to continue to be popular that’s what I want and I as Justin Jones which is uh at created in a garden on Instagram he is a breeder of antheriums and he said he’s working on a lot of kuna y Lin hybrids as well as the
Dewey Fisk hybrids and also dress laries I think essentially in the antherium market you’re going to see the pure versions of these plants get really popular and go for you know Delta Force and things like that go for $800 $1,200 and then see hybridized versions and those seedlings come out for a few
Hundred and that makes it more accessible to the general public I don’t think when plants are above that ,000 Mark really anybody’s buying them except for Growers and Shan from only plants has some great insights on exactly that point and then I reached out to Edgar
Over on Instagram he’s at aoid dead and he runs aoid green houses I believe with his daughters and since he has grown a ton of variegated AIDS he had a really interesting answer to this and he said that he thinks in 2024 the most popular plant will be a variegated Money Tree
Actually which I personally don’t Love Money Trees because it just reminds me of like a cheap Ikea plant and I’ve killed a couple of them but it is a really cool looking variegation and I looked them up they look like they go for a couple hundred bucks maybe two to
500 bucks whether you import them or get them domestically I don’t take this with a grain of salt it’s not the common answer I saw I think it’s a really interesting take on where the Market’s going to go in 2024 and then Mike the guy who I interviewed about the tricolor
Monstera and the monstera Masterpiece out in Florida for the International Air roid show I texted him and asked him the same question and his answer is kind of on par with a lot of the average that I ended up seeing and he says the variegated alakash is definitely
Trending upwards and buyers tend to not be too worried about the price because they can sell the corns eventually and kind of recoup their money back and that’s something I’ve also seen with the alocasias is even with like the alocasia Jaclyn varata you can get little quns
Out of the bottom of that you know the fredex the dragon scales the sinuata all of these are becoming more and more popular on Instagram and Instagram is a pretty great place to see at least what the trends are doing for the US that’s at least how I can kind of Judge things
And finally I got word back from Shawn at only plans and I was super excited to get this response I love Sha’s content I cannot wait to go to Asia and Thailand and Jakarta and check out all the different plant shows that he gets to go
To and he always shows us on YouTube which is really cool but he does point out a really interesting point about the disconnection between Asia and the West so he says actually in Asia it’s the stagghorn ferns actually and the dark Leaf ethereums which is also popular
Here as well as he points out that is the variegated ethereums which I think the variegated ethereums if they come down in price a bit we’re going to see them in the next year or two over here but again when they’re above that th000 Mark it really cuts out most of us
Consumers from buying them and only really breeders will buy those variegated versions like Bill over at Silver Chrome he has a bunch of variegated antheriums and they are beautiful but they’re in the5 to $110,000 range then he also brings up the variegated alocasias and they’re continuously being discovered and
Brought into the market and he finishes with I have a feeling this variegated alocasia boom might be felt soon in Europe and the US which is really exciting because I think alashi just like antheriums are pretty damn hard to grow that’s at least been my experience it’s really hard to keep the humidity
High and get the Heat and warmth from that tropical region in your Greenhouse or your Ikea cabinet and they tend to get spidermites like crazier than any of other plant that I’ve ever grown and this video from Sean that he put up on his Instagram about the flowy
International Plant show this is really cool and I think very telling if you’re to look into the aoid market and see what’s to come to the US I remember back in the day that they used to do Trend spotting for fashion out in Asia to see
What would be on The Cutting Edge of fashion over here in the US in a few years and that’s kind of what I’m seeing in the Plant World too Asia really sets the unique odd trend of like stag horn ferns which we’re not doing here in the
US really and then we kind of figure out what’s cool and grab bits of that and then make it mainstream and to summarize it’s my friend a up in the Bay Area at soiling my plants on Instagram go follow all these people these are all really
Cool profiles that I kind of check out to see what the trends are I feel like A’s profile is kind of exactly what I would consider as Trend setting because she’s very good at seeing what’s on Trend like she was way ahead of the Fred
Deck boom and she’s been on top of all the biggest darkest Leaf antheriums I always go over to her profile if I want to see like some cool huge dark black antheriums that maybe I want to get into and her response is kind of the same right now I’m in the antherium trend
Maybe more variegated alocasia and antherium because she also has a good amount of variegated alocasia and she also points out that a lot of the new alocasia species are coming out to the market and this is absolutely true the alocasia Serendipity actually reminds me a little bit of the homina I can never
Say that properly but I think this actually personally the Ruben Ence might become popular I don’t know much about that plant at all but every time I see a picture of the Ruben Ence I I’m just taken aback by the leaf size they also seem to have a good amount of wax on
That leaf and that’s what I want to see to be kind of anti-bug and the leaves just have all of the colors of the rainbow really across them so to summarize I think what we’re going to see are a lot more really big dark antherium and their children as well as
We’re going to see some variegated antheum but definitely lots and lots of variegated alocasia I am personally over the variegated filad dendrin generally except for if it’s like a variegated Billy or if it’s a variegated spiritus sancy I’m still down to get one of those
Hopefully those go to TC soon and we can grow up more of those but again like I said before the small plants that we can grow from seed corn or from TC I think more people are going to also get into TC so they can grow these little plants
Up in these very controlled environments as babies and then from day0 to 300 really see that growth and see that you know and have that gratification of growing something from seed is is intensely gratifying so thank you so much for watching this week’s video I hope you enjoyed the video and if you
Did please click the like button down below and consider subscribing we make one video about plants every week thanks for watching have a great Day

My real ick is how he says alo-KASHYA. Love the series though ;D
I think anthurium hybrids will remain very popular until the market gets oversaturated by all of the variants. It is already very confusing to customers. Just watch any ecuagenera live sale. I think this will reach a tipping point until that market crashes.
As for variegation, it has become so widespread that people can be picky in their choices. We'll probably see a move towards stable variegation.
Dang it- I can already tell I’m about to break the “no spider mite magnets in the plant room” rule for more pink varigation 🫣😂😍
Never heard anyone say alocashia haha
As an Asian, yeah, what Sean from Onlyplants said, Staghorn Ferns are coming in very very strong within Asian hobbyist,
I think it started from last 1-2 years ago when a Platycerium won the award for most prized plant collection in hobby in Taiwan, since then Platycerium has made a slow climb to fame with many dedicated sellers and various degrees of Staghorn fern forms and sizes (some just the size of your palm at it’s max size)
Perhaps due to Asian having a more limited and constrained spaces, vertical plants like Staghorn ferns will always has a place, and how so many Asian has grown them like an art display, framed, with a spotlight shining a light on it, it is a nice plant to have if you only one a few but display it nicely within your interior (Kawanrusa from aloneinoasis or Benjiplant did this)
In fact, I’m actually kinda surprised the West didn’t catch on this trend at all 😅
But apart from that, I myself have decided to finally give Caudex plant a try after the price has slowly declined down and finally got myself a Phyllanthus mirabilis, (give me 2 more months and I’ll finally add more into my Platycerium collection, been eyeing a really narrow and long Platycerium willincki along with a many fingered one)
This is very interesting and thank you ever so much for all your research. That said… and this is JUST my opinion and no disparagement meant against collectors and breeders: I've been growing houseplants as well as perennials, shrubs, annuals outdoors for longer than you've been alive. I would never pay more than 100.00 for a houseplant, but I am not interested in selling or breeding plants or being a 'collector.' Sure, I have lots of hoyas (about 4 dozen now) and more philodendrons and other aroids, but I grow them because I love them. I was blithely oblivious to the houseplant craze that erupted whenever it erupted (pre COVID?) because I was mostly just focused on writing about garden plants as part of my job. I'm grateful that breeders have developed all these amazing hybrids, cultivars and varieties etc, but I'll admire 99.44 per cent of them online and just grow what I can find here that doesn't break my budget–and that I can share with others to encourage their houseplant obsessions. Again: absolutely no criticism or insult meant. The fact that more and more people are embracing growing plants outdoors and in homes is a joy and gives us hope, too.
I’m wondering how this is going to go for these Legacy growers and nurseries. The last year and a half has shown the masses that anything that costs “thousands” now will likely be in TC and in Home Depot or Walmart within 6-12 months. The variegated Alocasia will crash quickly as well, because they DO make corms readily. Thai Cons have gone from “Unicorn” to “can’t sell for more than $40” in less than 6 months.
Personally, I think I’m done buying for a while. I have my collection, and at this point I’m back to collecting just for my aesthetic. I’m selling off a sizable chunk of my collection to move deeper into velvet anthurium, and anything else I keep is simply because I like them. 🤷♀️
(I did just get a Homalomena ‘Pink Diamond’ and don’t regret what I paid)
Aroid plants have been my favorite since i started my plant collection. Me personally i have about 100 plants and i tend to buy them based on how they look. the genus to me doesnt matter. That being said, the anthuriums and alocasias are probably my least favorite types of plants, they dont like me 🙁
honestly im hoping to see a spike in the the variegated philodendrons like the orange princess and spirit sancti. hoping to also add a variegated florida beauth and a florida ghost as well.
its honestly crazy to me how having 100 plants my list is still long and it doesnt seem like i actually have that many.
hoping to maybe see a larger selection of the monstera mint and aurea as well!
Keep up the good work 🎉
Problem with Alocasia is they import terribly, which may keep the variegated price higher…I hear you on philodendrons but they are just so much easier to ship and import which makes it more accessible especially with the cool hybrids 😅
Great video once again! Dark Anthuriums and variegated Alocasia all the way 100% Personally I LOVE staghorns but I'd be shocked if our market moved in that direction.
I haven't seen any trending plants I like. I'm over all of the hybrids and variegations. They make for cool instagram photos to look at though. No shade to people who love them. I would like to see more orginal plants trend again. Major appreciation to the turtle plant and how quickly it can take over the windowsills.
Strappy anthium please
My alocasia bloomed. It was uneventful 😂. I’ve never heard alocasia pronounced the way you do. I say Al -oh-cay-shuh. Anyone else?
Ok soooo turns out I say ALOCASIA WEIRD! 😂
The Variegated Alocasia is already very popular in Europe.
Staghorn ferns have a special place in my heart since that was the first plant I actively collected, many years ago. I hope those become more popular. I’d love to see unique specimens become affordable and available in the US. They are great for space saving, since they can be mounted and hung on the wall. It’s a unique plant that adds a little something different to a collection. I’ve also been loving unique, variegated, orchids. Also a plant that can be mounted and hung.
Pink variegations the way to go.
Homalomenas are so great. And really really great growers. I had one that turned into 6, and they've been very pest resistant for me too.
Think I'm a little ahead of the curve on stag horns. Got pretty much each type offered on fern factory, the starter plugs on etsy are hit or miss with most being sporlings that take forever. Not willing to risk the money for imports.
I live in NZ variegated Alocasias and Anthurium are super popular atm also the mint and aurea monsteras and there's a loyal crew of Syngonium collectors myself included.
I'm proud to say I have Variegated Philodendron Darklord and Alocasia Macrorrhizos Plumbea Variegata!!! proudly Philippines
I love plants but I will never understand the people buying $1000+ plants with one or two leaves. One thing goes wrong and you’re out thousands of dollars. Kinda seems like a circle jerk lol
Meanwhile I started with alocasia as a indoor plants
My alocasias flower at least once per year. I didn’t realize it was difficult 😅
I bought a small variegated money tree from a private seller for 50€. I have never seen another variegated one available.
This whole idea of making a plant a trend is really quite hard to imagine. Did it take Don Draper and his imaginary marketing team to create this fake expectation that in this day and age you can’t just clone a million of these popular plants.
I guess they took the line money grows on trees and ran with it. This is easier than printing money, as long as you have fools that buy into it.
A Florida beauty without variegation is just called Phil. Florida.
