Hi folks welcome back to the alotment it’s bloody freezing I mean literally it’s about 10:00 and the inside of the tunnel is still frozen completely covered in ice which to be honest is quite cool it’s such a gorgeous day it’s sort of one of those strange magical
Days where there’s just that feeling in the air and you know what it is it’s cuz it’s still there is no wind whatsoever and we’ve got this kind of freezing fog today you can’t see one from one side of the allotments to the other and first things first update on Fox
News it’s absolutely ridiculous the good news no new scratches it does appear so far as if this little fencer Knocked Up is just enough to have put them off now I unfortunately forgot to set up the trail cam well I forgot to bring it with
Me when I when I did this and it was such a rush sort of end of the day not enough time so uh I’ve not seen if it’s you know had an effect on them or if they’ve tried to have a scratch but they are still definitely around now I did
Leave the door open because I was a little bit worried and what they’ve done when I came into the poly tunnel the first thing I smelled was chips and from somewhere they’ve brought in someone’s packet of chips or I don’t know Kebab or something it’s an entire
Thing there’s a plastic bag there that it came in so I suppose I should uh give this a little tidy really the reason I didn’t shut the doors is because I didn’t have time that night I mean you saw how late it was and how dark the fog
Horns today crazy just non-stop fog horns um obvious reasons but Uh because this this hasn’t been sealed off properly I was a little bit nervous about them you know determined to get in I had such a funny reaction to this little fence video very positive but to be honest it’s the first time I’ve ever had something that’s properly divided
People in the comments I had about 50% of people saying perfect JB this is exactly what I would have done and I’ve done it myself a few people said they’ done it themselves and it was just enough to kind of deter foxes other people saying what are you doing this
Isn’t going to stop them it’s not high enough they can dig under all this stuff and it’s like it’s quite difficult to figure out what to do you know and everyone’s disagreeing but um you know like I said when I was putting it up I
Know that it’s not for knock I know that if they’re really determined to get into the tunnel they can they can dig under they can jump over I’m just hoping that it’s enough to deter them so if I get the thing along the bottom here then I
Can probably start to close this and at least then hopefully they’re going to stop bringing in takeaways and that kind of stuff now the actual plan for today is basically do something that’s going to warm me up do some manual labor the ground is frozen solid so I can’t do any
Digging but I think I can do a bit of tidying in here maybe a lot of composting I think these chilies are done for now this is proper hard Frost so I don’t think we’re going to have any more ripening and then probably just moving a load of wood chip or something
Like that just something to get me warmed up and just so I can enjoy a bit of fresh air today really ah the foxes have definitely made themselves at home in here there is a massive Fox dump oh for God’s sake it’s kind of like a tricky balance cuz I want
Them to be able to kind of come and go so they don’t absolutely attack and ravage everything but I think it might have gotten to the point now where they feel a little too comfortable in here on the trail cam footage they did look quite um timid but obviously
Getting pretty comfortable tell you what shoveling Fox crap is not what I thought I would be doing today you know every day on the alotment is an adventure you never know what it might bring oh I just had a quick TI in it’s looking much nicer I do think it’s a bit
Of a shame but I do think it’s probably time for the chilies now did have a comment from someone saying that they absolutely loved green chilies and couldn’t believe that they weren’t for me but unfortunately I just don’t like them I think they have a real bitter
Taste and for me not really worth the effort so o I might I might put those for one side and see if there’s anyone local who wants them rather than just bunging all the chilies themselves in the compost but oh speaking of chilies I should mention on the topic of foxes
I’ve had so many suggestions for things to deter them including using chilies and I actually did that I took some of my super hot peppers and I’ve kind of rubbed them along the frame and mostly with my shoes you know so I didn’t get them on my hand but I’ve kind of crushed
Them around the place and the foxes just don’t care the other big one is uh urine and uh let’s just say I have been watering the ground around the edge of the poly tunnel uh quite a lot and obviously not filmed that but uh they don’t care they don’t care it’s not
Stopped them we had all the herbal stuff the um Menthol the peppermint oil soak in the tea bags that are still lying around and they still smell quite fragrant so I think all I can do really is hope that the chicken wi is going to
Be enough to keep them out for now you know I don’t want to go and spend a load of time and energy and money on doing a proper fence and you know digging a thing around the ground one issue it has caused me of course I was planning on
Turning this side into a little mini raised bed you can see I’ve got the Timbers laid out there and it was just going to be a little one mainly for weed control more than anything else and with this fence up it’s going to be a bit
More difficult to do that so uh I might end up just having to get some membrane and do the wood chip again I mean there’s some membrane there I could maybe cut that in half and that would give me enough length to just kind of lay that around the outside edge to keep
The weeds down but that’s a problem for later isn’t it that’s a problem for later it’s just really lovely here today I’ve been sort of pottering around a little bit tidying up a few bits and Bobs just really boring stuff but it’s know there’s something about it you
Know something in the air really quite beautiful I think what I might do bit of Labor get some of that manure down on these beds behind you now these new big beds that I’ve put in and uh this is another topic of debate and one I’ve had
Lots of comments on about the lining and the best way to do it some people think you should line the bottom some people think you should line the top um compost bags was a good suggestion and I do have loads of Saved compost bags actually
That I kind of forgot about for using as a liner and they kind of the issue with doing it lining it the way that I have is that water can get in here and kind of then get trapped W and that is true and I’ve not lined the bottom either so
It can kind of soak it up from the ground but my thinking here is that I want to actually let this breathe a little bit you know so I’ve treated it so it won’t absorb as much water and then I’ve I’ve only lined just the inside there where the wet raised bed
Soil is going to be pushing up against it and when you’ve got that wet raised bed soil that is I think what does the most damage so at least with this way if any moisture does get in there it can still kind of breathe a bit and sort of
Dry out it’s a lot of you know a lot of different methods out there a lot of different ways personally I think if you if you do one at the bottom and one at the top then if water gets in that’s it it’s it’s not getting out and you you
Might might cause a few troubles so that’s just the way I’ve chosen to do it and even if these weren’t lined at all these scaffolding boards have got years in them they’re really really thick sub and substantial so the lining is just a little bit extra really a little bit of
Insurance but I think if I can bung a load of manure on here that will be fantastic for today’s work and one little interesting thing that I want to do with these beds is a mini experiment with different types of horse manure my friend Mike on the plot who I talk about
Quite a lot these days he’s always always down here giving me a hand well he got me a load of fresh manure and he is a big advocate of using fresh manure and just banging it on the bed and leaving it leaving it there to rot down
And do its thing over winter and he wasn’t very impressed with the compost center stuff that I use you know the composted horse manure that I bought in 350 a bag if you can do a bulk order for 80 lers that is that is a bargain price
Comes really well reviewed and I had pretty good experience using it as a mulch but he reckoned if I’d used fresh it would have been way way better so he’s got me a load of freshman I thinkig I figure it will be fun do a little test
Here today so I’ll do one bed with the compost center maybe this middle bed and then maybe I’ll do the first bed there with fresh and maybe I’ll use a mixture in the third or something like that look at this is looking amazing unfortunately we had another little camera malfunction
Do you remember the other day I said that my camera is uh potentially on the fritz and it’s starting to get this weird little moment where the screen goes green and I lose the video footage that I’m in the middle of recording it’s fine if I’m talking to you like this but
When it’s a time lapse it’s gone forever cuz now it’s done but there’s nothing better is there there’s nothing better then a freshly mulched bed now these were started as no dig beds with proper thick layers of cardboard and then Mulch and it has been brilliant for the weeds
You can see I don’t I’ve not weeded this once since it was made in March you know and that is pretty good all of this is path so what I want to do I’ve not filled this one because I think it makes sense to do a fresh layer of cardboard
And it’s all at home isn’t it and I’ve not got the car with me today so I couldn’t bring it up but I think I’ll leave that one for now and do a fresh layer of cardboard on there this has been completely Frozen so it’s just starting
To Tha so it’s quite difficult to break up but I’ve done the best I best I kind of can this stuff’s a bit nicer you can see this is the fresh stuff still a few lumps quite a bit of um bedding and that kind of stuff in here I think which I I
Hope is fine I know that the uh the farm is all fine you know no Amino pyro liid or anything like that Mike’s Used this same source for a long time with you know fantastic crops to be honest one of the reasons I want to try Mike’s method
Is cuz it’s plots amazing to be honest with you they the results he got from his first year of growing just from chucking down a load of manure and then putting planted oh puts me to shame he had some fantastic crops I think now I
Want to move on to these big ones and again I think I’ll do proper no dig with this one cuz it’s got a lot of weed pressure on this one I’ve never dug this little area or anything like that so I’ll get some more cardboard on that one
This one however I dug for potatoes and that kind of thing and you can see all of this kind of spoil oil that is mostly from the poly tunnel and various kind of bits of I don’t know digging and and that kind of thing that I’ve done around
The plot so this can all be spread out and then I’ll mix a load of manure in and I think this one will be will be nice I know that this bed is huge hopefully not to the point of being impractical though I know I’m going to
Have to stand on this bed and I’ll probably do some little paths across it you know just some wood chip paths or something like that so this one isn’t going to be as neat as the rest but it’s more about just having something for the plants to grow into I’m hoping it’s not
Completely Frozen I think we’re starting to Thor now so I should be able to get some some tools into that wish me Lu So still pretty lumpy bumpy in a lot of places a few kind of clouds in here that I’m hoping when buried will just kind of break down and this one I’m not going full no dig it’s just kind of too big to do that so what I’m going to do now I’ve
Got it a bit more leveled out got the bed in the final position can you tell I’ve warmed up a bit as well a this is great though I absolutely love it on a day like today when you start to get too hot that’s a that’s a good feeling you
Know he’s so on wow so I’m not planning on going full no dig in here just because I don’t really think it’s practical maybe I’ll regret it later I don’t know you know we muddle through these things but what I do want to do is
Chuck a few bags of manure on here and get it kind of mixed in get it kind of worked in this is probably going to be a slightly lower maintenance bed you know I’m going to do the sort of mainly I’ve got potatoes in my head for this
Although this whole thing is spuds would be a bit much but definitely the lower kind of the lower maintenance things I can put in here forget about for a season that that sort of thing is what I’m going for maybe potatoes follow by squash or something like that basically
Something where a few weeds it doesn’t matter doesn’t matter too much you know the bigger plants are going to go in here they should have lots of soil lots of room to spread out and hopefully choke out the weeds I saw one of Nile’s videos recently about fruit tree guilds
It was really good and he was talking about suppressors and different kind of classes of plants it was all very uh very formal but uh yeah that that’s sort of the idea for this a few suppressors that’s what I’m going to say so a few weeds in here doesn’t matter doesn’t
Matter don’t need to go full no maybe in time we can go no dig later on when I’ve got more material or or something like that but for now for now stop talking JB just get some stuff on [Applause] it Chuck it on mix it in it’s uh definitely easier
When it’s not all Frozen that’s for sure got a lot of straw in this one oh yeah that one’s that one’s very raw that’s fine though if you’re kind of new to gardening a bit of a beginner I wouldn’t be doing this in kind of spring
You know the only reason I I’m putting fresh kind of pretty much raw manure on here now is cuz it’s going to have that time through winter and the start of spring to kind of be broken down a lot more and where I’m going with this method it’s not like the plants aren’t
Going just in to the fresh manure it’s going to be mix with soil so it is still a bit Rich for some plant roots they can just kind of avoid it you know it’s not like they’re going into a raised bed that’s full of it and it’s going to kill
Them off because it’s getting burnt by kind of uh what’s it called like nutrient burn when it’s too rich for them you know this has put a proper smile on my face someone asked me Rec they kind of said you know what what got you into gardening what did you really enjoy
About it and I to H this it’s just like being outside and doing a bit of physical work sometimes it just lifts your spirits it just makes you feel alive you know it does for me anyway I just love this this kind of stuff when it’s a bit difficult how you know it’s
Raining or it’s dark sometimes it’s that little bit of adversity and difficulty you just feel like you’ve overcome it I’ve gone from being like frozen cold just to really warm and that in it in and of itself sometimes it’s all you need to just feel like yeah I’ve won I’m
Winning I’m doing well today having a good day you Know all this stuff’s really gross oh no oh it’s sloppy soggy see I’d rather be dealing with this than the fox poo in the tunnel really does feel like it’s made my day like yeah harvesting Tomatoes is good harvesting ch making a little fresh salad in summer is great
But have you tried chucking around some Hors manure that put a smile on your face is it just me is it just me am I a bit am I a bit weird or are there other people watching today just love a bit of winter work like this I just feel like a
Superhero do you know what I mean I know everyone else is kind of cooped off inside hot or rough or cold with the heating on and just being out here lagging stuff around today stop smiling I love it sometimes you just need a bit of exercise don’t
You I think that’s what it is today so next up what’s next where are you I’ve just seen you there you are you tunnel po beone that’s definitely the one from the trail cam the young one the fox is do like digging around and manure so hopefully this might keep them busy I’m
Going to set up that camera today I must mustn’t forget but oh gone from like yeah feeling good to uh wow I’m feeling tired I need a lunch break I really needed some drink I’m thirsty but the fog is coming in like the Mist wow I’m not sure how well the
Camera is picking it up but it’s quite Hest a little bit spooky to be honest now you’ve just seen me doing this which is uh it’s Prett pretty rough around the edges it’s not perfect but just cut the membrane down and got it along that edge and hopefully that will really really
Help with the weed suppression I know it will I know it really really will help So the plan for this is kind of God yeah you can see the Mist coming in behind me oh spaky um this is basically going to be a wood chip path I would like to
Membrane this one as well cuz it’s going to be a proper one you might be able to see there’s a bit of a shelf there where I started digging out and putting the wood chip down here and the idea was that there was just going to be a thin
Path down there and then the bed for the little veggies or whatever down there but I think I might now just turn this into a big path but at least for now but I need to get a hold of some membrane before I do that because that is a big
One and I don’t want to be weeding through the wood chip sometimes you just well maybe I’ll leave it for grass I don’t know that’s a later job it’s just walking past the front here and look that’s one of the chilies that’s one of the big ones where I just squished it on
My foot I might do a few more today don’t know just in case but the next thing on that subject with the foxes next thing I’m just going to chicken wire this door and today we’re going to set the camera up and close the doors for the first time fingers crossed
Fingers crossed I found some old chicken wire here that should be fine completely scratch that cancel what I just said guess he’s left his tools in the car so I can’t do that today and I will probably leave the doors open again for another night I’ll probably just leave
This kind of piled up here and maybe that will just them from getting in but I do get really nervous about shutting the doors and you know if they want to get in they’ll get in so maybe we’ll leave it open again for tonight and I’ll come up tomorrow and do
The uh do the chicken wire properly there is one more thing that I wanted to do what was it composting yes a nice one to finish on as well cuz it has it’s just maybe 2° or something warmer in the tunnel so these ones are for the compost
I’m going to chop them all up really small Unfortunately they just never really did it we’ve got the BT the seven pot bubble gum which I’ve always struggled with and that one is a Dorset Naga or a buter lakeia one or the other I think these ones were just going to
Hang on a little bit longer I feel like this one has got so many pods on it the cashmir for drying and that pry per needs to be harvested as well so um we’ll leave those for now and I was thinking I might this one this little
One this pretty one the Golden Nugget I mean it’s not not looking so pretty now but I’ve cut it right back put it into a small pot and I always say I don’t overwinter Peppers but that is such a gorgeous one that is really nice with
The variegation on the leaves and so I don’t need it to be productive but if that comes back to life in Spring and is looking pretty I think that’ll put a smile on my face so I’ll give that one a Try So uh this is a lot more time consuming than I expected Steve was definitely on to something when he said about doing this at home you sat in front of the TV feel like while I’m down the alotment I should be doing much better things
With my time and I have started doing it at home in front of the TV and it is it’s quite nice you just sort of don’t really notice you’re doing it but this is all stuff that I bought up a little while ago before I started chopping it
Out properly so I thought I’d just dip into it a little bit today and to be honest this might have been a bit of a mistake cuz the cold is starting to set in but now that it’s all chopped up small and nice it does look good one
Thing that is quite surprising though is you know when you’re chopping up stuff properly small it takes up so little space in comparison to if you’ve done it big you know so now this is all chopped up proper and mixed in with the cardboard I might do just a little bit
More cardboard in here that’s three chili plants and it all fits into there but what a productive day and I was was kind of tempted to spend the day indoors today I was looking out the frosty ground and thinking about how cold it would be but I think I made the right decision
I’ve had a brilliant time and I so good to make a start on those Beds which I do think look really really nice thank you ever so much for joining me with an extra special thank you to all of my chili pepper TI patrons Tony Bill Pam
Louise Mel Michael Denise socks in the garden and Andrew hopefully I’ll see you again in the next one

Like cleaning up after teenagers…well mostly lol! I have a small hotbin, I've put a couple of dustbins with lids next to it, one full of part rotted wood chip and one full of shredded cardboard- having a heavy duty paper shredder has been a game changer, it makes it a lot easier than tearing it up I've found. beds are looking so good and as far as winter jobs go…they are the best!!
If you were to put plastic on the bottom of beds surely there would not be enough depth of soil for growing things?
Good work jB you the best te moostiun men thans te video Top good weekend ☁️☕🧤🌡️❄️🧣🌬️🔥👋🌶️
I like how you’ve done the lining. Those boards were cheap enough that I’d rather keep the aesthetics over wrapping in plastic.
This is good news about fresh manure.. with 200 cattle at home, and a few horses, I’m not short of fresh stuff! 😜
Great that the fox protection has worked so far. I think you’ve opted for the best solution, especially within your allotment rules limitations.
Mulched beds look 😍
JB, where do you live that you hear fog horns? Watching from Melbourne, Australia.
👍
When I’ve made compost before I’ve run squares of the cardboard through a cheap crosscut shredder. Did a pretty good job of it
Should have named the vid “shitty day at the allotment”
In Indian cookery they often use fresh green finger chillies (Jwala Mirch) in curries. I like them in curries and also prefer green chillis on pizza. Got a fresher taste I find than red. Both are good though. Only issue with green chillis is whether they are even hot. I quite often have a load of green cayenne at the end of the growing season that have no heat. I'll still chuck them in a curry though just because I don't like to waste them.
12:48 Thought that was the sound of a melancholic piece of music starting there and JB was about to go off on a rant about the beauty of allotments.
Nice one JB, have you thought of Garlic, Onions, Carrots in that bed where you can just plant and leave it like you wanted. As for the paper i think i might have mentioned before get yourself a shredder either a strip one or a cross one and just throw them in there, that's what i do but if you both want to watch tv then it's hand shred as those machines can be loud sometimes.
Take Care and Stay Safe,
Barry (the Wirral)
The fox may have made your tunnel a place to stash food scraps. In cities they often use cars, on the bottom of the windscreen protected by the overhang of the bonnet
Hi JB, they do say lion poo is a great deterrent. Not sure how close you are to a zoo, just a 🤔.
When you were describing the trashed interior of the tunnel and your vulpine visitors' presumed part in that, at first I was entertained and amused: "Ah-ha-ha-ha, just too, too funny!" But then I got to thinking how most animals won't "mess" where they eat. How they won't soil their nests or their dens. How foxes, specifically, use their feces to mark their territory.
And how completely weird it seems that the foxes would relocate take-away boxes into your polytunnel to eat in comparative peace. Almost as if they were human….
I want to assume you're familiar enough with how fox scat looks that you wouldn't make a mistake identifying it.
Tell you what, though: I'd get that trail camera back in place where it can get a clear view but it won't be seen. That can be a tall order, but I'd be sure to do it. And if I had or had access to a camera with wi-fi and cloud storage, I'd employ of one those, as well as my trail camera.
(Why, yes: I do have a cynical, skeptical turn of mind. Be very careful.)
I think you are right that the fox are getting too comfortable…. they seem ready to create both a midden and a latrine on the inside of your polytunnel, maybe getting established for the winter. They are beautiful creatures and it is sad to deny them this nice winter shelter. But if they can't stay, better for them to know it now so they can dig in elsewhere. And better for your polytunnel, of course🤣
The fact that your foxy chums bring their own takeaway is amazing, shame about the dump. I think they are hardcore raver foxes, a rare breed but always up for a party.
See if you can get more wire (half the height of what you have now) and lay it on the ground around the tunnel and cover with soil. I've seen people do that for their chook houses and it drives the wild life crazy. Close the door, you don't want them to think its okay to coe in 🙂
I used a plank down the middle of a too wide bed that worked well.
Experimenting between the two manures is like looking a gift horse in the …um ..mouth so to speak ..don't give up on the bed running the length of the tunnel you've now got a ready made support for growing garden peas ..get the earlies in now ..preferably inside the chicken wire ..the smell of fresh onions irratates the lining of my dogs nose so I was wondering if a squashed onion in the entrance to the tunnel would work with the foxes
I always keep going through the winter on the coldest days it’s nice to get out in the short day light. I’ve used scaffolding boards for years . The method that works for me is to use one board at the base with damp course membrane uv stable inside and on top. Although this slowly rots it keeps its integrity for a long while . it protects the boards above completely if they are caped and lined. I have 12 year old beds made like this. The fox caught me out yesterday depositing on a tool handle I had used the day before. They seem to be making a statement. I’ve been gardening outside for 55years from 12 years old. When I get home I have a long cold shower . Afterwards I glow. Put a board across the doors and put blood fish bone a short distance from the tunnel that will keep them occupied. I never chop the plants just allow longer. Good video JB
Totally agree with you, I love spreading manure in beds it is the best!
JB why not with your bed down the side of the poly build a trellis up the back of the raised bed which will act as your barrier for the foxes. It will stop them getting close to the skin and you could use it to grow sweet peas, cucumbers, sunflowers
I have also solar powered ultrasonic pest deterrents from Aldi for cats, foxes and rats and they do work I have them near my chickens and the foxes stay away from mine and go to other plots so might be worth looking for a couple of them to try 👌🏼
Sorry another comment. Any spare boards cut one for a path across and you can move it. Nothing wrong with fresh manure.
Hope everything works out with the foxes your working so hard to save your tunnel Steve would be so proud off you. Beds are looking fantastic can’t wait to see it all in the summer. ❤
Hi again JB, I grew Meteor peas this year, they only grow to 18"" high. Ideal for growing along a narrow border of your polytunnel fence, two birds with one stone.
I first found your channel when you ate the chilli peppers, so funny. Have been enjoying since 😊😊
You really need to exclude the foxes off the whole plot, I know that'll be expensive but the damage and the disease and pollution IE poo etc which is a sauce of internal parasites etc. is not compatible with food production. I know you townies think they are "sweet etc" but you need a rethink I'm not in anyway advocating cruelty but be firm and exclude them asp.
Squash or potatoes will cope easily with the fresh manure in the big bed JB .Id be shutting those doors .Your creating a habit for them and that's going to make them try even harder to get in 😔
Hi jb I think you are doing great just carry on what you are doing lv Irene 😘 xx
wondefull update j b you got a lot done made me smile you work hard each visit you make to your plot best wishes to jess hope she is ok i no she gives you lots of support at times she is an amazing lady
Today on 🦊 newsss! 🍟 and 💩
I have chilli plants. I overwinter them in my spare room and they go out in late spring. I don't understand letting things die which could live and start fruiting earlier than any newly grown plants the following year.
The plot is looking fantastic. Just wondering what is happening with the plots on either side of you? Was anyone even on them this year at all?
You've done so well, your plot is transforming. I wasn't jealous of your plot last year, I am now!
Input = results, so they tell me 😂
The foxes are providing a free source of manure in the poly tunnel no? It seems they all come over to yours for a takeaway before pooping it out (maybe they had some lagers with the chips and that set them off). Also I enjoyed the comment about electric fences that appeared as you were talking about peeing round the tunnel, probably not best to combine the two
Hi JB love the videos. Use free cardboard then wood clippings, you don’t need weed lining. My allotment was full of weed suppressant and old carpet, spent months removing it all. 👍🏼
Lovely job!
looking nicely squared off now JB, dint I see you with a garden shredder? can't remember now, anyway if you have one, roll cardboard up shove though shredder huge time saving
I've always avoided using fresh manure because of grass seeds in the hay that's fed to the horses which would be killed in the composting process so it'll be interesting to see if anything comes up. Having said that I do grow winter squash in large piles of 3 month old horse manure which gives brilliant results. You now know what the foxes think of the chicken wire… a dirty protest!
I shred cardboard while sitting watching TV in winter and store in sacks in loft to use during rest of year, definitely smaller cut waste makes hotter and better compost.
Great video as always JB, Hope you warmed up.
Lovely video.
Love your little tree! Oooh the Medlar honey looks great, I either need to find a wild tree or purchase one, another great video Thanks Kerry and Dorie❤
Use the chicken wire fence for winter peas JB!
Fortunately We don’t have the danger of those animals here were we live. All we have are snail, slugs, and the bug horned tomatoe worms. I just pick them and feed them to the birds.
